75-80% does not speak English as a native, nor even as a second language to any extent
By Donna J. Jodhan extent.

When it comes to really understanding the landscape of our foreign markets, it would be really wise for us to keep a few things in mind if we want to attract foreign consumers.

Firstly, there is over 75% of the world's population whose first language is not English let alone speaking it as their second language.  We should not really be surprised by this; despite the fact that English is the language of business both on and off the Internet.  English has been the language of business for as long as we can remember but is this poised to change?  Is it possible that some other language in the not too distant future will overtake English as the one of business?  If so, which one?

Could it be Chinese; China has one of the fastest growing economies in the world today.  Could it be Spanish?  Or could it be one of the dark horses so to speak?  Whichever language it is, it would be prudent for us to keep an eye on this picture.
Please see my reference below.

Women for women

Hello there!  I'm Christian Robicheau, assistant editor at http://www.sterlingcreations.ca.
It's the end of November and December is just waiting to come running in.
I hope that everyone is ready to welcome the holiday season.
Today I have an editorial to share with you by our president Donna J. Jodhan.  All about women standing up for women.
I wish you a great weekend.

+++++++++++++++
Women for women
By Donna J. Jodhan

I've been in business for myself now for over 16 years and I must say that it has been for the most part extremely gratifying.  Previous to this I worked at two major Canadian banks and IBM Canada.  Those experiences were also very gratifying but in all honesty, having and running my own little company has been the best for me.

Life is a blind business woman is very challenging at times.  Some times I am treated equally, some times not.  Often times I am given a rough ride because of my blindness and many times I am given a rougher time because I'm a woman.

One of the most frequently asked questions is this:  Do you feel that women are harder on women or that women are easier on women?  I've been giving this a lot of thought and this is a difficult question to answer.  My opinion is that in the normal scheme of things, women try to be easy on women, but every now and then and maybe a bit too often, women are harder on women and some times even dare to admit that they'd rather deal with men rather than their fellow women.

Whenever I've had the chance to ask various women why is it that they choose to be harder on women than on men, their most common answers are:
Women don't make good managers.
Women don't have the time to commit fully to anything because their family comes first.
Women cannot commit fully to anything because they are the main care givers of the family.
Women are unable to commit to full time jobs because when they become pregnant they need to go off on maternity leave and this results in them being away from the office for extended periods of time each time they become pregnant.
Women managers are much more moody and temperamental than their male counterparts.

I've had both male and female managers throughout my corporate career and I've also had to deal with both sexes in various capacities as a small business owner.  I've seen lots but at the end of the day I truly believe that the only way for us women to survive both as business professionals and as persons, is for us to stick together.  No, I'm not a feminist by any means and I'm not a card carrying member of any women's groups but I believe that in order to survive us women need to stick together more closely.

For who to understand us better than our very own woman folk?  Who to understand the trials and tribulations that we face on a daily basis than ourselves?  Who better to stand up for us than we ourselves?

Just my humble opinion.

I'm Donna J. Jodhan wishing you a terrific day and weekend.

When in doubt, pick up the phone

Greetings!  I'm Nico Trimoff, manager of accessibility and transcription services at http://www.sterlingcreations.ca.
Have you ever wondered if phone communication will ever fail to be important?  For me, I feel strongly that communication by phone will always be very important; especially when it comes to ensuring that we get the right message.
I have a great article to share with you today.  One that was sent to us by Scott Chippersac and I thank Scott for his contribution.
I hope that you find it as interesting as I did.
Have a great day.

Digital tools do a terrible job of conveying context, personality and

Mark Evans
Globe and Mail, May. 28, 2010

We live and work in an age when digital tools are becoming a bigger part of
how we communicate and do business.

With services such as e-mail, Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn, people
communicate and build relationships with colleagues, partners, suppliers and
customers without ever talking to or meeting them. In many ways, it has made
communications and business more efficient and productive because things can
be done quickly while delivering a huge amount of information and content.

While digital tools are wonderful, they have their weaknesses and
limitations.

Digital tools do a terrible job of conveying context, personality and
nuance. What may come across as constructive criticism in person can be
interpreted as critical within an e-mail. The same goes for sarcasm, which
in person can be funny but can have
A negative connotation if done digitally.

For communications where the spirit of the message can be difficult to
interpret digitally, there is a simple solution: the phone.

It may seem like a strange concept to call someone when you could send an
e-mail or a direct message on Twitter, but talking to someone - even for a
few minutes - can be just as effective and efficient. At the same time, a
phone call can help overcome any issues simply based on the tone of the
conversation.

The rule of thumb is "when in doubt, pick up the telephone." If there is a
chance that what you want to convey could get lost in the digital shuffle,
resist the urge to send a message.

The telephone isn't sexy, and talking to someone means you have to have a
conversation as opposed to sending a message into the digital ether. But
even one phone conversation can change the dynamics of a relationship
because it gives both parties a way to get sense of personalities and
attitudes - something that is difficult to get

What if Facebook Added a "Blog" Tab?

Greetings!  I'm Mark Micheau, manager of research and translation services at http://www.sterlingcreations.ca.
It's the middle of the week and today I have a great article to share with you.  One that centers the focus on a very important question; what if Facebook were to add a blog tab?
Please read on and I wish you a terrific day.

+++++++++++++++
A WebProNews article
What if Facebook Added a "Blog" Tab?
Chris Crum | Staff Writer

How Facebook Could Help Itself and the Blogosphere

You may have gotten some good links in the past, but don't count on them helping you forever. Old links go stale in the eyes of Google. Facebook wants to keep users on Facebook. So far, they are doing a pretty good job of that. More and more people are spending more of their online time on Facebook, not to mention, spending more time connected to the web in general (at least partially due to rising use of smartphones).

--
How much time do you spend on Facebook in a month? A week?
Let us know.

Facebook recently made it a point to show users how to use the social network to keep up with the news. Users can simply become fans of their favorite news organizations' pages (feel free to include ours in your mix), and group them in a "news" list just as they would create a group for friends or co-workers. The bottom line is; spending more time on Facebook getting news headlines is spending more time on Facebook period. There is also talk of Facebook working on its own web email service. Again, more time spent on Facebook.
One way Facebook could capture even more of its users' time, is if it introduced a "blog" tab. Facebook currently has a "notes" tab, and quite a few people do use this. It's a similar concept, but what if it was given more prominence and renamed "blog?" A blog tab might keep Facebook users even longer. First of all, the users blogging with it would obviously be sticking around to write their posts. In addition, their friends and fans would be sticking around longer to read those posts, which would generally be much longer and require more time than the average status update.

Would more people become bloggers?

I suspect that the word "notes" doesn't quite resonate the same as the word blog in the minds of many Facebook users, although for all intents and purposes, the feature operates like a blog. You can post longer-form content for your friends and fans to see, and they can comment on it, while it all remains in tact in one spot for future reference. Not only could the addition of a "blog" tab keep Facebook users around longer, but it could have a significant impact on the Blogosphere. Simply calling it a blog and having it available right from any user's profile page might just inspire.

Is social media killing blogs?

No, but it's hard to say that use of sites like Facebook and Twitter (and now Google Buzz) don't lend to less blog posts being created. If nothing else, it's simply a time issue. It is easy to push out a quick status update if you have something to say. It's easier than blogging. For longer-form content, blogs are generally the better option, which is one reason they are still alive and well. But if Facebook had a blog tab, the social network could cut into the Blogosphere even more, given its huge userbase, while establishing itself as a go-to place for blogging (another area in which Facebook could compete with Google, I might add. Don't forget that Google owns Blogger).

If Facebook did this, it is very unlikely that all current bloggers would immediately go running there to do their blogging, but Facebook users who may not already be blogging may find the urge to do so when that tab is right in front of their faces. And frankly, I'm confident many current bloggers would go running there. Facebook is a powerful tool for building an audience or expanding upon one.

It works on MySpace. Look at director Eli Roth's blog, for example. He gets a lot of engagement there (although he hasn't updated in several months). Facebook is another animal altogether, and its growth is unprecedented. Just look at Facebook's latest round of stats.

Facebook is frequently adding and changing features, as any user can certainly attest (for better or for worse). It is not hard to imagine them doing something like this. For the record, the company has made no mention of going such a route, to my knowledge. There are currently ways to blog within and around Facebook if you look hard enough, but if Facebook made blogging a focal point, I think it could take off, and perhaps lend to the concept of Facebook as a news source, and even add greatly to the Blogosphere by encouraging more blogging.

3 Creative Ways to Learn a Foreign Language Using the Internet

3 Creative Ways to Learn a Foreign Language Using the Internet
By Donna J. Jodhan

There used to be a time when learning a foreign language meant that you had to physically attend classes.  No more!  Now you can do it all over the Internet.  This is not to say that physically attending classes has gone out of style.  Some are using a combination of both methods.

Each method has its advantages and disadvantages but as time marches on, you will find that more students will choose to use the Internet because of convenience and this method is a more effective way to reach students in remote areas.  Distance learning at its best.

For those who prefer the face to face contact by attending physical classes, I don't think that you should have anything to be too anxious about.  It is not going to go away any time soon.

What we will probably see is a combination of both methods being used.  I have a great reference for you to check out.  Please see below.

Commercials that do not tell all

Greetings!  I'm Scott Savoy, editor at http://www.sterlingcreations.ca.
Ah yes!  Another gorgeous November weekend is upon us and today I have a very insightful editorial from our president Donna J. Jodhan to share with you.  All about how many commercials do not go far enough to tell blind and sight impaired persons what they are attempting to impart.  I invite you to read on.
Enjoy your weekend.

+++++++++++++++

Commercials that do not tell all
By Donna J. Jodhan

It has always been a standard practice for advertisers to create and produce commercials that are glitzy, flashy, and commercials that are packed with lots of visual effects.  For after all, these are the ones that more often than not bring in the big bucks to all involved.  All well and good for those who are able to appreciate the visual effects, but what about for those who are not able to enjoy all of this?  Those who are blind, vision impaired, and those who have difficulty viewing TV screens?

Very often, when I am sitting down to watch or rather listen to some TV programs, I have difficulty understanding many of the commercials because there is not enough audio description for me to be able to fully grasp the content and meaning of the commercial in question.  Certain sounds within a commercial often give me a hint as to what it is all about but at the end of it all, I am still missing some important pieces to complete the picture.  For example; the commercial with noises of a family eating dinner, then I hear noises, but there is nothing to tell me what is happening in between.

Recently, I came across a commercial of a little girl asking if she could burst open a piñata.  When her mom said yes, I heard the noise of the piñata being burst open followed by someone spitting out something.  However, what I missed was this:  There was a picture of the face of the father's mother on the front of the piñata and the sound of someone spitting out something was that of the father when he saw his mother's face on the front of the piñata.  Finally, the mother-in-law herself was also in the room but her back was turned so she missed seeing her own face on the front of the piñata.

I hope that somehow, producers of commercials will be able to find away to inject more audio content into their commercials.  It will not just benefit those with vision difficulties; the blind, the vision impaired, and those with learning difficulties, it would also benefit those with cognitive disabilities as well.

I'm Donna J. Jodhan wishing you a terrific day and weekend.

Your best American cities

Hello there!  I'm Donna J. Jodhan, your friendly virtual travel agent.
Well, another week gone by and a great weekend to look forward to.
I hope that everyone is getting ready to relax and that our virtual travels will help to take a load off your minds.
Time for you to buckle up and sit back!
Lots of fun for us to have this week.
Enjoy!

Week of November 20

Your best American cities

1. Garland Texas
If you are seeking a city that is peaceful, quiet, and free from clutter and confusion, then that city is Garland Texas.
Located within shouting distance of Dallas, Garland offers residents the opportunity to live in a city that is one of the best in America.
In addition, residents can enjoy attractions in Garland as well as in nearby
Dallas.
The cost of living is below the Texas and national average.  There are excellent educational facilities, and Garland is a great city to raise a family.

2. Albuquerque New Mexico
Ah yes!  Albuquerque!  A breath of fresh air!
With sunsets that linger on forever, breath taking mountain views, and dry warm weather.
Albuquerque is a city for relaxation, recuperation, retirement, and for the one who either wants to further their studies or find a job that would yield tremendous personal and financial satisfaction.
The cost of living is significantly below the national average; below that of other desert cities such as Las Vegas and Phoenix.
Albuquerque is heavily influenced by the Spanish culture but not to worry.
The American influence is most present and growing.
Down town restoration is well on the way; with modern lofts and historical revival in full swing.

3. Boise Idaho
If you are seeking a city with true scenic beauty, then that city is definitely Boise Idaho.
Nestled in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, Boise offers you the ability to enjoy nature in its truest sense.
From swimming and fishing to rafting, and from skiing to hiking and biking, Boise's river and mountains have it all for you.
Employment opportunities are real, and the city is one of the safest and most secure in which to live in America.
You don't have to worry about white noise and you don't have to worry about the air you breathe!  It's pure, fresh, and healthy!
Boise has some of the lovliest neighborhoods in the country.

4. Tempe Arizona
Well, look what we've got here!  A beautiful city with warm and lovely weather that is tempered by its closeness to the Town Lake and the Salt River.
Tempe makes a perfect spot for a vacation.
Come and enjoy shopping that ranges from the upscale to the ordinary.
Miles and miles of malls and retail outlets.
Boating, swimming, fishing, hiking, and frolicking in wading pools.
Parks where you can linger a bit and let your dog out to play.
Close enough to Phoenix so that you can have the best of both worlds.

Create A Simple Web Page From Email And Share It Within Seconds

Posterous is almost certainly the quickest way to create a web page and get it online. Post a simple text message, or include additional content such as an MP3 file or a picture. Unlike traditional blogging and publishing services, such as Blogger or FaceBook, you don't even need to sign up for an account.

Think of something to say, then email it to:

Within a few seconds, you'll receive a reply telling you the address of your published page. Click on the link, and it's there for you (and the world) to see, It really is that easy. Web publishing doesn't get easier, or quicker, than this. If you want to show your holiday photos to family or colleagues, or publish the agenda for your next club meeting, this is the simplest way to do it. Initially your published page will be given a unique URL, albeit not a particularly friendly or memorable one. It can be changed, just view the page and click on the button to claim the account. You can then change the name (the bit before posterous.com) to anything you like, so long as it isn't taken already. And of course you can assign a password to the account too, so no one else can continue contributing to it.

Posterous is clearly no substitute for a full-featured web publishing system like Drupal, Joomla or WordPress. But nothing compares to it for speed. In the time it takes to send an email, you could publish your message as a web page instead. There are plenty of free places that you can publish content on the web. Blogger, WordPress.com, MySpace, Facebook, and plenty more.

But for sheer simplicity, Posterous is definitely worth a look.

Language Translation - Transforming Your Website Business

Language Translation - Transforming Your Website Business
By Donna J. Jodhan

When it comes to deciding as to whether or not to have your website translated in to multiple languages, the decision should be a simple one and one that is made with logic.  Here are a few basic pointers from me.

If your business is international then you should consider translating your website into English, Spanish, and Mandarin Chinese.
If your business is confined to just one country, then there is no need to have your website translated in to any other language except that of the country in which your business resides.
You do not need to have your website translated into a foreign language if you do not have foreign consumers.  However, if you are attempting to attract foreign consumers then you need to decide on which type of foreign consumer you want to attract and then choose the appropriate language.
Make sure that if you go ahead and decide to translate into any language, that the language is translated by someone whose mother tongue is that language.

I have a great reference for you to check out.  Please see below.
 +++++++++++++++
Language Translation - Transforming Your Website Business ...
By projecly
There is no need to carry out language translation for your website into Mandarin Chinese even if that is the most popular market with the highest number of speakers in the world right now. ... However, if your business is international by nature, your attention will certainly be focused on Mandarin Chinese, English and Spanish. Mandarin Chinese is still by far the most spoken language in the world and has the fastest growing consumer buying capability. ...

Home businesses can be a blessing

Greetings!  I'm Christian Robicheau, assistant editor at http://www.sterlingcreations.ca.
I hope that everyone is enjoying their November thus far.  Today our president's editorial is her point of view on the creation of home businesses.  An interesting one indeed.
I wish you a great day.

+++++++++++++++
Home businesses can be a blessing

Many people scoff at the idea of creating and developing a home business.  Up till a few years ago, society did not think much of the home business venture.  They felt that it would probably fail before it even got off the ground and there were other comments like:
A home business does not really mean that you are working at a real job.
A home business would mean that you spend too much time at home and not enough time communicating with others.
A home business is not as meaningful as working for a real company.

This way of thinking has been changing quite drastically for at least the past decade and now more than ever, more and more persons are going into their own home businesses.  There are a few driving forces behind this drastic change and I'd like to look at these.

First, the stress factor.  In a recent survey published in the United States, it was revealed that over 85% of respondents attributed their stress to many of the following factors:
Having to deal with traffic jams.  Many of those surveyed complained that they were often stressed out because of having to spend so much time in traffic snarls.
Having to spend too much time at the office and not enough time at home.
Having to deal with supervisors who did not appreciate the time and effort that they were putting in at the office.
Not much hope for career advancement.
Having to deal with cramped office space and other co-workers.

Second, the advent of the Internet.  The Internet has literally opened up millions of opportunities for persons to be abele to work from home. Anyone choosing to start their own home business can now use the Internet to do such things as:
Market and advertise their products and services.
Buy and sell their products and services.
Send and receive information.
Send and receive tasks to be carried out.
The Internet has made it possible for home businesses to be flexible when it comes to work schedules and in addition, it is so much easier for persons to keep in touch with their clients more easily and efficiently.

In the opinion of many experts, it is becoming easier to open a home business.  The benefits to doing so are looking more and more enticing to those contemplating it.  The idea of being able to spend more time at home with the family, avoiding those long hours in traffic snarls or just traveling to and from the office, the thought of becoming one's own boss, and the ability to make one's own schedule and work at one's own pace, all of these advantages are making the home business venture more exciting, interesting, and above all, more beneficial.

Your best American cities

Hello there!  I'm Donna J. Jodhan, your virtual travel agent and today I think that we deserve a bit of a break!  Maybe after a long hard week, we need to put our feet up and relax for a bit.
So why not come with us on our virtual trip and have some fun?
Pack your bags and just walk out that door and forget about what is bothering you for just a few minutes.
Enjoy!

Week of November 13

Your best American cities

1. Boston Massachusetts
Ah!  The perfect city for the one who wishes to further their studies at a prestigious university.
Harvard and the University of Boston!  Two of the best in America!
Boston is a city of history, fine dining, luxurious hotels, and something to meet the demands of all sports enthusiasts.
From Ice hockey to baseball, and from basketball to football, Boston has excellent teams in each of these sports.
Site seeing is a must when you visit Boston and you must stop for a while to eat at its famous Oyster House and bar where the movie Cheers was filmed.

2. Tacoma Washington
Looking for a city that is safe, friendly, and clean?
One with lots of beautiful landscapes surrounding it?
A city with character and one that offers a haven from white noise, clutter, and confusion?
Then why not the West coast city of Tacoma?
A city that is as healthy as they come.
For vacation or to stay a while, Tacoma invites you to come on down.

3. Scottsdale Arizona
If you are seeking a city where you can expect to retire in relative comfort and class, then look no further than good old Scottsdale.
A city where the sun is constantly shining and one where culture and history walk hand in hand.
A city where affluence is the name of the game and tourism helps to sponsor the city's economy.
A city where golf is a reality rather than a dream and sitting out on one's back deck all year round is a norm and not a rarity.
Why not come on down for a visit?

4. Ontario California
If you are seeking a city that would enable to have a foot in both worlds so to speak, then Ontario California may be your best bet.
Close enough to Los Angeles and within throwing distance of the Coast, Ontario makes the perfect location to raise a family.
or maybe, you are seeking a place to start from the bottom.
Ontario is a thriving city with healthy industrial sectors in manufacturing, wearhousing, and services.
Its weather is warm and pleasant all year round, and several well known American corporations call Ontario home.
Why not come and live in a city that allows you to be free of clutter and confusion?

I'm Donna J. Jodhan bidding you a happy travel time.

ANOTHER NEW WORLD ORDER

Greetings!  I'm Nico Trimoff, manager of transcription and accessibility services at http://www.sterlingcreations.ca.
Ever wondered what shape our world is starting to take on or what shape it may be taking on?  Today, I have a very informative and introspecttive article to share with you.  One that was sent in by a reader, Cori Spaulding.  A very good article indeed and we thank Cori for his contribution.
Enjoy your day.

A reader's contribution

ANOTHER NEW WORLD ORDER
Globalization, aging, information revolution, climate change - the planet has been
completely reshaped again in the first decade of the 21st century.

Kevin Lynch
Globe and Mail, Sept. 4, 2010

As the ballad goes, "the times, they are a-changin'," and so too is the context that shapes our national interests and our global relationships. In just 20 years we
have gone from a bipolar world of two military, if not economic, superpowers, to a single-polar world of an economic, political and military hyper-power to today's multipolar world with competing centres of economic and political power, and evolving military
balances.

It has also been an intellectual roller-coaster ride from Francis Fukuyama's The End of History in the mid-1990s to Fareed Zakaria's
The Post-American World a decade later.

Clearly, the first decade of the new millennium will cast a long shadow over the 21st century. It was marked by jarring and unsettling events: Y2K; terrorism;
corporate debacles; horrific natural disasters showcased by the digital information age; the
invasion of Iraq and the absence of weapons of mass destruction; the dot-com bust;
and the global financial crisis. Cumulatively, these events have sapped public trust
in leadership and changed expectations for their governments. Paradoxically, they
have created gaping fissures in the body politic about how best to meet them.

And while these events naturally captured the headlines, they represent only the tip of the proverbial iceberg of the "global drivers of change" that are now
reshaping economies, societies and politics. There are four core structural trends driving this change: globalization, demographics, the information revolution and climate change. These, together with the events of the past decade, are inexorably changing
the world order.

FLATTER AND MORE WIRED
What shape will this new world order take? Let's start with globalization, which has been made possible by the information revolution. It is bound together
through global supply chains, global capital markets, the Internet and unprecedented movements
of people. We now inhabit a flatter, more interconnected, more wired, more competitive
world than was imaginable just a decade ago.

Without this pervasive globalization, the global financial crisis would have been
a U.S. banking crisis. Without this globalization, the United States would not have
been able to live beyond its means at no apparent cost for the past decade, nor would
China have been able to export its way to two decades of double-digit growth.

Without this globalization, supply chains would still be national rather than worldwide, and costs would be higher. The global restructuring this has facilitated will see Asia account for 50 per cent of world GDP by the end of this decade, an economic prominence last seen three centuries ago. Indicative of the pace of change is that China became the second-largest economy in the world in 2010, moving another Asian
economy, Japan, into third place.

At the same time, the information revolution is reshaping how we work, communicate
and interact. We are creating a 24/7 digital universe that is changing our concepts
of markets, the value of information, systems of social networking, political dynamics. And the revolution is far from having run its course. Twitter will be obsolete before I ever get around to using it.

The Internet and blogs are changing politics. Blogs are beginning to lead - not follow - traditional news media. The growth of Web data is an unimaginable order of magnitude greater than trade and investment.

Overlay on this the demographics of aging. While aging has always been a personal
reality, it had never been a problem for whole societies. Today, all industrial countries
are aging, with impending declines in the working-age population. The impacts will
be profound, affecting pensions, health care, education, housing, immigration and
economic growth. Aging will put an incredible premium on skilled workers, and shift
the "wealth of nations" to countries with younger, educated populations. The hunt
for talent will become more global and more of a preoccupation.

If the effects of aging are profound, the consequences of climate change are uncertain
and unsettling. While the answer is obvious - to change behaviour you have to change
its price in a market-based system - the way forward is not. Copenhagen didn't inspire confidence that the multilateral system can manage climate change. And the responses of major emitters don't inspire confidence that they are willing and able to tackle
it domestically, let alone collectively. Climate change may become the litmus test
of the G20's effectiveness and durability.

A VOLATILE RECOVERY
The world economy is now in recovery after the great recession. But just as this was not a typical recession, nor will it be a standard recovery. This global
recovery will be remembered for its uncertainty, volatility and overhanging imbalances. The U.S. recovery will be tepid by comparison with previous cyclical rebounds, constrained by lingering unemployment, debt, government deficits and too little savings.

Canada should outperform the U.S., supported by strong commodity prices and healthy balance
sheets, but there are limits to our ability to decouple. Asia will be a much faster-growing
region, buoyed by demographics and low-cost production, but hampered by too much savings, too little consumption and too much reliance on trade-led growth.

Europe will be a slow-growth area, weighed down by demographics, unaffordable entitlement
programs, and large deficits and debt. Markets seem predisposed to react vigorously to each unexpected economic tea leaf, reinforcing volatility.
Fiscal-policy exit strategies are equally challenging. Deficits are high and structural
in a number of G7 countries, and higher still in a number of smaller industrial countries.
Estimates suggest a doubling of U.S. debt levels over the next five years, with similar
projections for Japan and the euro zone. With pervasive globalization, unsustainable fiscal situations in small countries such as Greece can threaten systematic
stability, and growing debt burdens - even in reserve currencies - can unsettle markets if there
is no clear light at the end of the fiscal tunnel.

With political gridlock in the U.S. and elsewhere, combined with renewed worries about the recovery's strength, the risk is that deficits will remain large for
longer periods. The ensuing debt imbalances will only reinforce the shifting economic centre
of gravity away from low-saving, heavily indebted, industrial countries.

CANADA'S STRENGTHS, WEAKNESSES To an extent that we had not seen in the postwar period, the Canadian economy
outperformed the U.S. in the recession and is continuing to do so in recovery. Canada's strengths
are impressive and extend well beyond our strong fiscal situation, stable financial
sector, bountiful resources, agriculture capacity and proximity to the richest market
in the world.

They include our "public infrastructure" of resilient institutions of government and governance: Canada's professional and non-partisan public services; our
social safety nets that reassure in times of turbulence; our values, rule of law and respect
for diversity; our largely non-ideological approach to public policy; and our civility and openness in political discourse. Yet some of these strengths of our
Westminster model of governance are beginning to fray, and this should be cause for public concern.

While Canada stands out, the shifting global economy presents opportunities and risks.
Our challenge will be to leverage strengths, tackle weaknesses and take initiatives to reposition ourselves for the changing order.
On the economic horizon, a key weakness is Canada's poor productivity performance.

Consider: Canada's business sector has an average productivity level that is now only 75 per cent of that of the U.S. A dollar near parity and aging demographics place an urgency on improving our productivity performance. This "productivity deficit"
relative to the U.S. costs Canadians more than $300-billion a year, or $10,000 per
capita. And yet governments are not seriously contemplating how to close it.

The broader challenge is about how well and how quickly Canada will adjust to the
global drivers of change affecting all countries: tackling demographics and their wide-ranging impacts from health care to education to pensions; tackling the
rise of Asia and its implications for our foreign policy; tackling climate change in all
its immense ramifications. But a risk to early and effective action is a political environment in Canada that has shifted to a short-term focus, leaving few forums
to discuss and achieve consensus on the broad structural trends that are reshaping
our world.

While the world economy is emerging from the great global recession, the global environment is volatile, and global drivers of change are propelling us toward new global alignments.

In the midst of this lies the opportunity for Canada to stake out new markets in emerging-economy giants like China, India and Brazil, to refocus our market
presence in the United States toward rapidly growing regions and sectors, and to make Canada
more innovative in what we produce and more productive in how we produce it. It is
an opportunity we cannot afford to squander.

Certain Phrases You Shouldn't Enter In Search Engines

BBC NEWS

Warning on search engine safety

Some net searches are leading users to websites that expose them to spam, spyware and other dangerous downloads, reveals a report.

According to the research the most dangerous words to search for are "free screensavers".

The report found that 64 percent of the sites found using this phrase were flagged as causing problems for users.

The authors urged search sites to tighten up rules to ensure users are not inadvertently exposed to harm.

Dangerous game

It is well known that visiting sites offering porn, gambling and free MP3s leaves users at serious risk of falling victim to spyware and adware. However, the research by Ben Edelman and Hannah Rosenbaum reveals that those carrying out searches for innocuous subjects are at risk too.

The report looked at the websites returned for 1,394 popular keywords searches found via Google, Yahoo, MSN, AOL and Ask. The results returned for each search term were then analysed using the Site Advisor security tool. Once installed this piece of software warns users when they browse websites known to be dangerous.

The most benign of the pages that Site Advisor flags up try to change browser settings, to redirect people to ad sites, and the most dangerous deluge users with spam or bundle adware and spyware in with downloads.

In one case signing up with one site led to a test e-mail address getting more than 300 spam messages per week.

DANGEROUS KEYWORDS

Free screensaver

Bearshare

Screensavers

Winmx

Limewire

Download Yahoo messenger

Lime wire

Free ringtones

Some of these risky sites use security flaws and loopholes in browsers to install software without users' knowledge and can lead to that machine being hijacked or to a user losing personal data.

The riskiest search terms were associated with downloads (such as "screensavers" and "free ringtones") and file-sharing (such as "Bearshare" and "limewire"). Searching under these categories returned a substantial proportion of dangerous sites.

The authors speculate that spammers and scammers are turning to websites to try to snare victims as efforts are made to stop spam before it reaches e-mail inboxes.

"Where internet users go, attackers follow," wrote the authors.

Across all searches approximately 4 to 6 percent of sites returned were flagged as dangerous.

The authors noted that this was more "alarming" than it first appeared because American net users carry out almost 6 billion searches per month. This translates to 285 million clicks on these potentially dangerous sites every month.

"Even a single visit to a dangerous site can have serious and lasting implications for the average internet user," wrote the authors. The number of risky sites increases when users click on sponsored results, the adverts generated to accompany particular search terms. Dangerous sites are two to four times as common in sponsored results found the research.

"We are troubled by the untrustworthiness of search engines' ads," said the authors.

The authors urged the search engines to get much tougher on those who buy adverts to accompany searches and expose those that abuse visitors. "We're alarmed by the scope of these problems - by the many ways search engines lead users to sites that can be harmful, or provide wrong information.

Translation Services ? Bridging the Language Divider

Translation Services – Bridging the Language Divider
By Donna J. Jodhan

It is becoming more evident that bridging the language divide is the only way to crack the barrier of communication with regard to western companies doing business in eastern countries.  No one should really be surprised to read this; our world has become much smaller because of the ability to communicate fluently and efficiently in each other's language.

In order to survive on a global level or to do business in a foreign country, we have no choice but be able to communicate in the country's language and it may sound like a mountainous task but at the end of the day it really is not.  Here is where the teaching of foreign languages comes in and the opening up of a host of new careers is made possible.

As I see it, this can only mean good things for those wishing to pursue careers in foreign languages; as teachers, as translators, as interpreters, as so many other possibilities.  I have a tremendous reference for you to check out.  Please see below.

Dare to dream

Hello there!  I'm Scott Savoy, editor at www.sterlingcreations.ca.
We are living in a world where the art of dreaming seems to be a bit on the outward trend and why?  Maybe it's because we are just a bit too busy to dream?  Or is it that we maybe and just maybe, we have forgotten how to dream?
Our president Donna J. Jodhan has her own opinion on this and today I'd like to present her editorial.
I wish you a great weekend.

Dare to dream
By Donna J. Jodhan

In a world where everyone is becoming busier just trying to keep up with all kinds of things around them, I still dare to dream.  In a world where it appears that we are a bit too busy to care for each other, I still dare to dream.  In a society where we spend more time thinking about ourselves instead of listening a bit more to each other, I still dare to dream.

Yes, I dare to dream and it is the one thing that no one can take from me.  I dream that some day soon we as a people will start to realize that there is much more to life than just keeping up with the Joneses and Smiths.  I dream that some day very soon companies will wake up and realize that in order to stay in business they will have to change the way in which they offer services to seniors and persons with disabilities.  I dream that sooner than later governments will really start to walk the walk instead of just talking the talk when it comes to treating persons with disabilities equally.  I dream that some day sooner than later women will be recognized for their abilities.

As a professional woman who is blind and of mixed race, I face many challenges on a daily basis but it does not stop me from daring to dream.  So the A & P supermarket in my neighborhood refuses to assist me whenever I go shopping and their head office says that "They are not in the business to help people, they are in the business to sell groceries." That will not stop me from daring to dream.  So the R.E.B. Magnetics company refuses to understand that if they offer their Sudoko game to blind consumers they should provide the instructions in Braille.  That will not stop me from daring to dream.

So there are those chess clubs in Toronto who just don't seem to have the time of day to accommodate blind chess players.  That is not going to stop me from finding other avenues to play chess and daring to dream.  So there are those who were afraid to teach me to ice skate but you know what?  Thanks to Jan Haney I learned to ice skate and I dared to dream.

I keep on daring to dream because of wonderful people I meet every day during the course of my life.  Believe it or not, there are people like the folks at the Hadley school for the blind who offer distance learning courses to blind and visually impaired people around the world at no cost.  There are wonderful people like the folks at the United States Chess Association who help to keep dreams alive.  There are wonderful small companies like One Stop Internet Solutions that really understand how to provide true blue customer service.  There are persons out there who will go out of their way to help me dare to dream and for this I am eternally grateful.

I continue to dare to dream and it is because of this that I continue to be successful.  I have always dared to dream and it is why others have been encouraged to help me fulfill these dreams.  To the folks at Concordia and McGill universities in Montreal, the Montreal Association for the Blind, the folks at Microsoft Canada and Novelle Canada, and to so many others too many to mention, thank you!

China's currency manipulation could hurt economic recovery:
A reader's contribution

Friday, October 8, 2010
Lee-Anne Goodman, The Canadian Press

WASHINGTON - The threat of currency wars torpedoing a fragile global
economic recovery dominated International Monetary Fund meetings on Friday,
with Canada's Jim Flaherty saying he had no hope of an easy consensus during
a weekend economic confab.

"I certainly don't anticipate there's going to be any unanimous agreement
here in Washington this weekend on currencies, flexible currencies and how
much they should move," the finance minister told a news conference with
members of the so-called Commonwealth Secretariat.

"I do think that there will be a clear resolution on behalf of those
countries that have currencies that trade freely... that there are
consequences that are bad for world economic recovery, for a world economic
recovery that is fragile, by other countries maintaining relative
inflexibility in their currencies."

Flaherty was weighing in on the economic dust-up being fought primarily
between the U.S. and China as the Obama administration continued to put
pressure on the Chinese to allow their currency to rise in value against the
U.S. dollar. The goal is to boost American exports.

U.S. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner said Friday that China was
endangering a global economic recovery by refusing to allow the yuan to
appreciate.

He called on the IMF to get tough by monitoring the economic actions of its
member countries, arguing that taking on a more stringent watchdog role
could be crucial in preventing another global economic meltdown.

Japan, Brazil and South Korea have also taken steps recently to keep their
currencies weaker in an effort to make their exports more attractive.

Finance ministers from around the world are in Washington this weekend for
the annual meetings of the 187-country IMF and its sister lending
organization, the World Bank.

Flaherty pointed out that a currency war among major economies will not
benefit China in the long run.

"China needs western economies to sell its goods," he said. "It is not in
their interest to have currency wars."

He also chided China for breaking a promise it made at the G20 summit in
Toronto earlier this year that it was "committed to allowing greater
flexibility" of the yuan.

In June, China announced it would allow more flexibility into its currency
system, but since then the yuan has risen by just two per cent against the
U.S. dollar. American manufacturers say the Chinese currency is undervalued
by as much as 40 per cent and is making it impossible for them to compete.

"We are at the stage that we have a recovery that is modest and fragile,"
Flaherty said, adding now was not the time for China to be manipulating its
currency.

The head of the International Monetary Fund issued the same plea to global
finance ministers, urging them to stop toying with their currencies for
their own economic gain and instead join forces to commit to a worldwide
economic recovery.

"There is clearly the idea beginning to circulate that currencies can be
used as a policy weapon," Dominique Strauss-Kahn said. "Translated into
action, such an idea would represent a very serious risk to the global
recovery."

The world is struggling to emerge from the worst recession since the end of
the Second World War, he added.

"We are gathering at a pivotal moment facing a very uncertain future,"
Strauss-Kahn told the delegates. "Growth is coming back but we all know that
it is fragile and uneven."

China, however, is refusing to swiftly free up its currency, and Chinese
officials in Washington this weekend remain insistent that their plans to
slowly revalue the yuan is the best approach.

"China will move the exchange rate gradually," Zhou Xiaochuan, head of
China's central bank, said during a panel discussion. "We will do it in a
gradual way rather than shock therapy."

But Flaherty warned of the consequences if China doesn't act soon, saying
it's integral to avoid actions which "distort trading relationships and
invite retaliation."

The U.S. is attempting to pass trade sanctions against China in Congress
that would allow American companies to seek import duties on Chinese
exporters using an artificially weak currency. The measure has passed the
House of Representatives but still has to get through the Senate.

China has assailed those efforts, calling them protectionist.
