Labour relations; Human rights advocates say they've seen a surge in number of women fired

Greetings!  I'm Nico Trimoff, manager of accessibility services at www.sterlingcreations.ca.
Today, unlike my good news of last week, I'd like to bring a very troubling trend to your attention and I truly hope that after reading it you will find it easier to raise your voices and make known your opinions to the powers that be.
Please read on.
I wish you a great day.

Labour relations; Human rights advocates say they've seen a surge in number
of pregnant woman being fired

susan pigg
The Toronto Star, Apr. 28, 2009

First-time mom Vera Trevisanello was supposed to return to her training job
at a downtown financial services company this week. Instead, she's been
pounding the pavement with her year-old baby in tow, looking for work as a
waitress.

"I paid off my student loan working as a server, so I'll do it again if I
have to, to get through this," says the Whitby resident.

But Trevisanello confesses she finally broke down in tears last week after
being told the Boston Pizza near her home was already overstaffed for tough
times: "I had to beg them to take my resume."

With just 12 days to go until Trevisanello, 36, was expecting to return to a
promotion and a boost in salary to $55,000 a year, she got the phone call
she'd been anticipating pretty much since the day she told her female boss
she was pregnant: "My services were no longer needed."

"I think they planned this," she says of the company. "I felt they were
really gunning for me from the minute they found out I was pregnant and
about to change from this young married woman, who had all this time on her
hands and was willing to work as many hours as needed, to someone who's got
needs of her own now. Suddenly it was as if, 'We're not first any more.'"

Human rights advocates say they've been seeing a troubling surge since last
fall in the number of pregnant woman being fired by employers claiming that
hard times are to blame.

A spokesperson for Trevisanello's previous employer refused to discuss
specifics of the case, other than to say some 400 employees have been laid
off over the past 20 weeks: "There were a lot of difficult decisions and
this was just one of them."

Ontario's Human Rights Legal Support Centre, an independent agency funded by
the province to provide free legal services to people experiencing
discrimination, are now averaging 10 to 15 calls a week from pregnant women
who are frightened for their jobs, can't nail down return-to-work dates or
have been told there will be no job waiting for them at the end of their
maternity leave. The calls hit "nightmare" levels in January, frontline
workers say.

But what's almost as worrisome is how brazen some bosses have been in
writing emails or leaving phone messages that are proof positive there's a
link between the pregnancy and the job cut, says Consuelo Rubio, manager of
client services for the legal support centre.

In lots of other cases the firings are far more cleverly masked, says one
new mother who didn't want her name used because she's still negotiating her
severance package. Two weeks ago, the pharmaceutical firm where she has
worked for more than a decade laid off two pregnant women and 14 workers on
maternity leave,
but their pinks slips went out with dozens of others.

"I think we were targeted, but it's impossible to prove," says the woman who
now finds herself in an especially difficult position - unable to claim for
employment insurance benefits because she's used up her full allotment as
maternity leave. "It sure sends a strong message to women that you might not
want to get pregnant right now."

Trevisanello suspected her pregnancy wasn't an altogether happy event for
her boss, claiming she was asked to book her full seven months of
obstetrical appointments with her Whitby doctor in advance, provide a list
of dates and take them as vacation time. She says she was also asked to
reschedule her three- month ultrasound appointment because the time was "not
convenient to the company," which meant it didn't happen until the
five-month mark.

Things got especially difficult when Trevisanello started getting
debilitating headaches in her seventh month and went over her sick-leave
allotment. As a courtesy, she says, she decided to leave work two months
early and wasn't concerned when a box of personal items from her desk
arrived by courier a few months into her maternity leave, including an
outfit and a book for the baby.

When she got a call a few weeks ago with the offer of a promotion and raise,
Trevisanello saw it as a sign her boss had done a rethink and was keen to
get her back. Her husband feared right away that the promotion was just a
way to move her out of her old job, which has since been staffed by someone
else.

Businessman Michael McNally, a father of six children and the owner of four
Tim Hortons franchises, has no sympathy for employers who complain that
pregnancies are costly and complicating for companies.

So he was mortified to end up on the wrong side of Ontario's labour laws
last January when a pregnant employee complained that her store manager had
drastically cut her full-time hours to about four or five a week not long
after she announced she was pregnant.

When McNally was asked for an explanation from legal support centre lawyers,
he discovered it was largely a miscommunication and moved quickly to credit
the employee for back hours so she could qualify for full maternity
benefits.

"We've even hired pregnant women. I don't see (pregnancy) as a disadvantage.
As employers we need to respect and support families. After all, we depend
on families for our business."

How To Retain And Attract Visitors To Your Website

Greetings!  I'm Mark Micheau, manager of research servicdes at www.sterlingcreations.ca.
Are you having difficulty retaining and attracting visitors to your website?  Are you tired of constantly receiving advice that just does not work?  Well, before you give up and go away, I'd really like for you to read the following article.  This one comes from a very reliable source.
Have a great day and happy reading.

How To Retain And Attract Visitors To Your Website

By Matthew Elshaw

Over the past few weeks, Google have been running a series for website owners called "speeding up in a slowdown", where they discuss ways to grow your business in tough economic times. They're half way through the five week series so I've decided to pool together and share some of the best tips they've released so far.

Attracting New Visitors:

Tip #1: Writing the highest quality content

The most important part about creating a website is providing the most informative information you can. As Jack Herrick (the founder of wikiHow) notes, "Our high quality articles don't just get a little more traffic that the mediocre ones, they get hundreds of times more". Strive to produce the best page on the internet about your chosen topic.

Tip #2: Sharing your information

Many webmasters are afraid to share their content, because they worry about helping their competitors. By sharing, what you are really doing is encouraging your competitors to provide free advertising for your site and link back to you.

Tip #3: Create a community

Allow collaboration between users on your site. There are many ways to achieve this, but it all helps to build an online community which will attract new users and keep others coming back.

Retaining Visitors:

Tip #1: Functionality before layout

Think about tasks on your website first and layouts second. If your users are coming to your site with specific goals, make them easy to accomplish!

Tip #2: Use ads as potential exit paths

Instead of interrupting your users main tasks, try placing ads as potential exit paths after they have completed a specific action. Users will feel more comfortable using your site and will be more likely to come back.

That's it folks! While some of these are quite simple, it's very tricky to build a profitable business without getting the basics right.

Language Translation Services for Global Business

Top of the day to you out there!  I'm Donna J. Jodhan and today I would like to chat a bit about language translation services for global businesses.

Language Translation Services for Global Business

The first thing for any budding translator or language professional to remember is this:  English is not the universal language spoken around the world.  There are large parts of our globe where other languages are spoken.  In South America it is Spanish.  In Asia it is various Chinese and Indian dialects, and in various parts of Europe, English is often the second language.

I guess what I am trying to say is this:  Language services will always probably be in demand for global business.  Without language services, global business would probably be in big trouble.  In fact, global business will probably die quickly if there were no language services to support it.
There will always be a need to have documents translated, speeches interpreted, and things to be written in languages other than English.  With tele conferences on the rise, the need for language interpreters is also on the rise.  The experts are saying that the demand for language services for global business is only going to keep rising and this may be a recession-proof area for you to look into.

Recession or no recession, we need to depend on global business to survive and global business needs language services in order to run smoothly.  The two go hand in hand and I am going to close by giving you a reference to check out.

Internet service providers not listening

Good weekend to you!  We the team at www.sterlingcreations.ca are pleased to bring you an editorial by our president Donna J. Jodhan.
We wish you a great summer's weekend.

Internet service providers not listening
By Donna J. Jodhan

I am really not sure if our Internet service providers really care or are even listening but I am going to give this a shot.  At least after writing this I will feel a bit better.  Or I would feel that I have done what I
can to make my views known.  My beef today centers on two of Canada's major Internet service providers; Bell Sympatico and Rogers communications.  Two of the main players in the communications arena,
two giants that do not seem to be paying attention to the growing needs and demands of their bread and butter consumers of tomorrow.  Shocker or shaker?  No, neither because in my view persons like us are not the priority.

Here is the picture as I see it.  I have had the misfortune to be at the receiving end of some very shoddy service from these two companies and it all has to do with their staff not being adequately trained to
take care of consumers with disabilities.  I will deal with each company separately.  Bell Sympatico in particular continues to ignore specific concerns when it comes to providing adequate phone and on site
support.  Firstly, their first line technical support staff is made up of technicians whose first language is not English and the communications gap is huge.  Secondly, when you tell them that you are visually
impaired and unable to see the lights on your modem or the model number on your modem, they simply do not understand the meaning of the term visually impaired.  Even when I say that I am blind, they
just do not get it.  So what am I to do?
I have complained and their solution is to keep crediting my account for the inconvenience but that is not going to fix things.

Thirdly, they do not provide any on site support to help customers install their modems.  There are a growing number of customers who are unable to troubleshoot problems when it comes to their hardware
and this number is only going to grow because of the following reasons:  Aging baby boomers did not grow up with the Internet and are not very comfortable with all of this new technology and as technology
continues to travel like a freight train, the problem is only going to become more acute.  These are the technically shy or disabled consumers that Bell Sympatico continues to ignore.  Persons with physical and visual challenges are yet another group that Bell Sympatico continues to ignore and each time I run into problems, their reaction is that they do not provide on site support.  A few weeks ago, it was clear to me
that the problem was at their end because I kept getting a message that the Internet was unavailable and that there was no connection to Bell Sympatico but their technicians kept telling me that the problem was at my end.  Finally after 30 minutes of arguing with them I had to call my own technician to come in and have a look and when he told them that everything seemed okay at my end, it was only then that
they admitted that the problem was at their end.  At the end of it all I had to pay my technician $100 for his visit and Bell Sympatico never even apologized.
All of this could have been avoided only if the Bell Sympatico technicians were able to communicate in English in an appropriate manner.

Rogers is a bit better when it comes to providing phone support because for the most part their staff can communicate fluently in English but what I ran into a few weeks ago was this:  I was unable to access their online billing facility and after spending about 15 minutes on the phone with them, and after having spoken to four different persons, no one was able to help me and the last person kept telling me that the fault was at my end.  He suggested that I get my technician to fix my system.  When I told him that I could not even enter my username and password, his words were:  "I can see it on the screen and if you can't then the problem is yours."

I'll say it again and I'll continue to say it:  The bread and butter consumers of tomorrow for all companies offering services are going to be those who are technically shy or technically disabled.  Those who did not grow up with the Internet and those who are unable to help themselves due to a physical or visual disability.  Unfortunately for most Canadians, they are often limited to which Internet service provider they can choose due to certain territorial or neighbourhood restrictions.  This does not mean that these two companies should not be paying more attention to the growing needs and demands of the above mentioned types of consumers.  In the case of both companies, I have found that their cell and land line customer services are way better so why is it that their Internet customer service is not quite up to snuff?  Maybe someone can help me to understand.

Doctors' prescriptions go electronic

Greetings!  I'm Nico Trimoff, manager of accessibility services at www.sterlingcreations.ca.
I have some wonderful news for you today and although this article may be a bit old, it certainly announces a break through for doctors.
Please read on as I feel that this news can go a very long way to modernize the health industry.
Have a great day.

Doctors' prescriptions go electronic

Tanya Talaga
The Toronto Star, May 13, 2009

Doctors' hand-written, sometimes barely legible prescriptions will be
replaced by electronic versions throughout the province by 2012, the
government says.

Pilot programs have been established in the Collingwood area and Sault Ste.
Marie, but the technology will soon make its way to all doctors' offices.

Prescriptions that are electronically generated, signed and transmitted from
doctors to pharmacists should greatly reduce errors, said Dr. Alan Hudson,
chair of the eHealth Ontario board.

About 400,000 preventable reactions to medication - and 4,000 deaths - occur
in Ontario annually.

Women Prefer Blogs/Facebook To Twitter

Greetings!  I'm Mark Micheau, manager of research services at www.sterlingcreations.ca.
Today, I have a very interesting article to share with you.  One that highlights women's preferences when it comes to Facebook and blogs over Twitter.
Please give this one a read as it can very well help you to market your company in a more meaningful way.
I wish you a great day.

Women Prefer Blogs/Facebook To Twitter

Women Prefer Blogs/Facebook To Twitter
Jason Lee Miller | Staff Writer

Losing interest in traditional media

Women keep their personal lives and business lives very separate when it comes to social media, according to the 2009 Women in Social Media Study by BlogHer, iVillage, and Compass Partners. While women consider blogs great sources of information, especially regarding purchases, the vast majority of women use social networks solely for keeping in touch with family and friends.

Over half (55%) of the women surveyed in said they participate in some kind of blog activity (publishing, posting comments, reading), and 53% use social networks.

But here's the kicker: Women use social networks in the purest sense only; 75% use them to keep in touch with friends and family, and not so much as information sources or for making purchase decisions. That's a major insight considering this is the half of population making 85% of purchase decisions in the US.

In contrast, women rely more on blogs for the business of life, and are twice as likely to use blogs than social networks as an information source (64%), for advice and recommendations (43%), and opinion sharing (55%). Women are 50% more likely to use social networks merely as a means of keeping in touch.

A third of those participating in social networks are loyal to just one and do no other social media activities on a weekly basis. There are likely infinite reasons for that, but it sheds a rather harsh light on why only 20% of women appear to use Twitter.

It could mean that most want all of the networking under one roof for convenience, and only desire one-to-many communication if it involves people they know and trust. It could also mean that Twittering is still considered a medium for celebrities, politicians, and digital hipsters; the survey found that women who themselves blog are significantly more active across all forms of social media.

"Bloggers have a broad reach in the social media population and the survey demonstrates that women who blog are the most actively engaged social media participants -- constantly seeking out new ideas and ways to share their opinions about those ideas," said Susan Wright, president of Compass Partners.

And other women are listening, perhaps more than they are to traditional media. Thirty percent are watching less TV, 31% are listening to less radio, 36% are reading fewer magazines, and 39% are reading the newspaper less.

Numbers like that indicate a huge shift in the media landscape: the sex making the most purchase decisions are rejecting traditional media in favor of online sources. Forty-five percent of women in the survey said they decided to purchase an item after reading about it on a blog; among the women in the more digitally savvy BlogHer network, that number is 85%.

Women bloggers are twice as likely to share a positive purchase experience on blogs and/or message boards and about 40% more likely to share a negative experience. So it's a good idea to be very, very nice to women bloggers, especially since they are likely to carry significant influence with non-blogging women.

"At a time when the economy is top of mind for more than 70 percent of these active social media participants, women who blog are turning to online resources, including blogs, to help them make their day to day purchasing decisions," said BlogHer cofounder Elisa Camahort.

The results of the survey are concluded according the answers of 2,821 women in the general US population, 1,008 women in the BlogHer network, and 788 women in the iVillage network.

Large market for Spanish-language books in the US | Random Stuff ...

Top of the day to you out there!  I'm Donna J. Jodhan, and today I have some breaking news for you.  How much do you know about the market for Spanish translated books?  Well, you are about to find out.

Large market for Spanish-language books in the US | Random Stuff ...

Hey!  I have some breaking news for you and it all has to do with the growing demand for books to be translated into Spanish!  Yes, and right here in the good old United States of America.  Spanish-speaking people living in the United States are beginning to demand that more and more English books be translated into Spanish.  They are greedily demanding to learn more and expand their horizons.  They want to learn more about what is going on in the English-speaking world because they realize that they are living in an English-speaking world.

To meet this demand, more and more publishers are getting on the band wagon to release versions of both English and Spanish titles simultaneously.  This is very exciting news for translators as well because what it means is that the need for translators to translate books from English to Spanish is only going to grow with the passage of time.  Spanish translations of books are not going to be limited to any particular field or arena.  Books on health, finance, education, technology, anything, the skies are the limit!

Spanish-speaking Americans is the second largest group in the United States and is expected to grow for the foreseeable future and the experts say that many Spanish-speaking Americans are bound and determined to preserve their language.  Great news for translators plus anyone who is willing to work in both languages.  I am going to leave you with a reference to check out.
Large market for Spanish-language books in the US | Random Stuff ...
        By Stian Håklev
They don't have anything in French (in Toronto at least, maybe in Ottawa it's different), nor in Spanish or Chinese. Certainly, in the various Chinatowns there are great Chinese-language bookstores, but I always wondered - if you are successful ... Now publishers are starting to time the release of English and Spanish versions so they coincide. Best-selling translations have helped the book market overall by alerting readers to the broadening selection of Spanish titles ...

Emergency procedures in alternate formats?

Good morning!  We the team at www.sterlingcreations.ca are pleased to bring you an editorial by our president Donna J. Jodhan.  One that is thought provoking and important to the well being of many.
We hope you find it interesting.
We wish you a relaxing weekend.

Emergency procedures in alternate formats?
By Donna J. Jodhan

With our attentions being turned towards the ramifications of the swine flu and what procedures we need to be taking in order to stay healthy as members of the public, I would like to ask the following:  As a blind person, I am wondering out loud if Ontario and indeed Canada has given any thought to producing emergency procedures in alternate formats?  Not just for this present situation but in general?  Up until now, I have had a devil of a time obtaining several pieces of information in alternate formats, and it would really not surprise me if this one has probably fallen through the cracks.  To the disabled community this will neither be a shocker nor shaker but to the mainstream Canadian it should certainly be.

What really beats me is this!  Disabled persons are Human Beings like everyone else.  We pay taxes, we spend money and contribute to the economy's welfare, we listen to the news, we enjoy things like everyone else but; why is it that every time we ask and demand that important information be provided in alternate formats, there seems to be a general resistance on the part of those in authority?  Why is it so difficult to understand that in order to stay safe and secure we also need to have equal access to information; the same information that is accessible to the mainstream Canadian?  Why is it so difficult for both provincial and federal governments to produce vital information in alternate formats?  It really should not be that difficult.  In the general scheme of things, information these days is normally produced electronically before printing takes place.  So why is it that our provincial and federal governments seem to conveniently have a mind block or mental breakdown whenever they are told that disabled persons require the same information in alternate formats?

I am absolutely flawed whenever I phone the 1800 ocanada number and request information in alternate formats!  I would say that about 95% of the call takers are stunned and/or stymied whenever I make my request for information in alternate formats.  I am even more surprised that these highly paid bureaucrats and officials react in such a surprising manner and I am referring to those who sit on the various panels and committees.  Sadly, they continue to miss the boat completely and are often at a loss to justify their feeble excuses for not providing vital information in alternate formats but why should I be surprised?  They don't even provide elections information in alternate formats so why should I and my disabled friends expect them to do any better when it comes to providing emergency procedures in readable formats?

The mundane excuses that it will take too long or that it would be too costly to produce vital information in alternate formats are wearing thin.  In fact, they are beginning to be annoyances and simply reasons for not wanting to deal with it.  For the life of me, I cannot believe that supposedly logical-thinking individuals are unable to understand why we as a community need to have our information in a format that we can read independently.  Why is it so difficult for these bureaucrats to understand that it is our right to have equal access to information; not a nice to have or an after thought.  Is it that these so-called experts are thinking that it is easier for us to depend on others to tell us and help us in cases of emergency?  Dare I suggest that in their minds, we should be treated as second class citizens because we really are not that important to society?

Canada can choose to take either of two paths:  Continue to treat us as second class citizens; ignoring our basic rights as Canadians to equal access to information.  Or, wake up and smell the coffee; show the rest of the world that this country does indeed treat all persons equally.  For anyone who is listening and who can help to untangle this picture; disabled persons have a right to equal access to information.  I urge you to correct this error now before fate decides to step in some day soon and embarrass you.  No country would like to be guilty of having unwittingly placed a group of persons at high risk because they failed to provide them with vital information.

I'm Donna J. Jodhan wishing you a terrific day and weekend.

The new Amazon Kindle has arrived

Greetings!  I'm Nico Trimoff, manager of accessibility services at www.sterlingcreations.ca.
This article may be a bit late but we felt that it would not hurt for you to read it once more and be reminded of Amazon's latest and greatest.
Have a great day.

Dear Amazon Associate:

Kindle 2, the next generation wireless reading device. With a sleek and thin design that makes Kindle 2 as thin as a typical magazine and lighter than a paperpack, the new Kindle has seven times more storage and now holds over
1,500 books. It has a longer battery life and faster page turns. An advanced
display provides even crisper images and clearer text for an improved book-like reading experience. And Kindle 2 even reads to you, with "Read to Me", our new Text to Speech feature.

With Kindle 2 we kept everything readers love about the original Kindle-the convenience of reading what you want, when you want it, the immediacy of getting a book wirelessly delivered in less than 60 seconds, and Kindle's
ability to "disappear" in your hands so you can get lost in the author's words. We're also excited to announce that the Kindle Store has over 230,000
ebooks available.

Read-to-Me

Now Kindle can read to you. With its new Text-to-Speech feature, Kindle can
read every book, blog, magazine, and newspaper out loud to you. You can
switch back and forth between reading and listening, and your spot is automatically saved. Pages automatically turn while the content is being read, so you can listen hands-free. You can speed up or slow down the
reading speeds or choose a male or female voice. Anything you can read on
Kindle, Kindle can read to you, including books, newspapers, magazines,
blogs and even personal documents. In the middle of a great book or article
but have to jump in the car? Simply turn on Text-to-Speech and listen on the
go.

Is Google Playing Rope-A-Dope With Social Media?

Greetings!  I'm Mark Micheau, manager of research services at www.sterlingcreations.ca.
Do you have any opinion on Google's relationships to social networks?  Would you like to get an insight into what Google is doing and what Google thinks when it comes to social networks?  Well, I'd like for you to read the following article.
Have a great day.

Is Google Playing Rope-A-Dope With Social Media?
Jason Lee Miller | Staff Writer

Go ahead, Microsoft, wear yourself out

Regarding social media, the best you can say about Google is that the company has merely dabbled in it. Google's absence in this space becomes as glaring as Godot's when chief rival Microsoft is busy funneling money toward the hottest new products, products created even by former Googlers.

That leaves us with two options: Google's either planning something or avoiding it altogether. Recent events-or maybe better, non-events-suggest the latter.

Google's become much better in the past year or so at keeping big secrets and then dropping them kind of Apple style on mouth-agape crowds. One supposes Google's apparent pullback and nonparticipation in the social media craze suggests something major on the horizon.

But that's just a pipe dream. Google seems more interested lately in cooling its jets, saving money, and wrestling with telcos in DC over highly complex network issues affecting some grand consequence fairly far down the road. My hunch is that Google is more concerned about actual networks, not social ones. Actual networks are expensive, not subject to faddish whims, and in the long term offer tremendous leverage to those who control them. Remember all that dark fiber? All that hardball over spectrum? All those enraged telecom executives?

But that's another article, actually one I've written several times.

Google's history with social networking isn't a very good one. You've heard of Orkut, Google's social network, only if you're one of three people: an Indian, a Brazilian, or somebody who follows Google's every little move.

The company had the opportunity to buy MySpace for half what News Corp. paid. The Big 3 (Schmidt, Page, Brin) thought they could do better and said so. We're still waiting for that, and in the meantime Google spent twice what News Corp. paid to serve search ads to MySpace, a bum deal Google's not going to renew.

Check it Out Here!

And YouTube, the most visited video site on the net, a worldwide phenomenon and cherished source of user-generated content, is a money pit that got them sued by Viacom for a billion dollars.

Given just that short history of being either unimpressed, ineffective, or royally screwed over, it shouldn't be that surprising Google's sitting out the social networking thing lately. Plus, sensing the economic crunch knocking at ad revenue doors, Schmidt has already said the master plan at the moment is to sit on the money, maybe swim around in it ala Scrooge McDuck.

What about Googler-created Twitter? Schmidt remains unimpressed with the "poor man's email system," though parts of the company are playing along via Twitter accounts among murmurs of realtime search and customer resource management. What they're not doing is sponsoring stuff there, unlike Microsoft. They're also not pouring in hundreds of millions of dollars into Facebook-like Microsoft has done.

Maybe Google's playing Rope-a-Dope. Let Microsoft spend its money. Let social networks expend their energy trying to figure out a way to monetize. Let all of them plow through their resources. When they figure it out, we'll jump in. That's certainly what Wall Street analysts are advising, too.

Or maybe they're just really not interested.

Save Money, Save Face: Hire A Professional Translator | Big ...

Top of the day to you out there!  I'm Donna J. Jodhan and today I would like to discuss the benefits of hiring a professional translator to carry out your translations.

Save Money, Save Face: Hire A Professional Translator | Big ...

So many companies make the fatal error to have their signs translated into a second language using either translators who are not skilled in translation, or they use software to do it.  The dangers to choosing either of these paths could be catastrophic and many companies do this in order to save money.

Too often we see where yes, the company has managed to save money but no, the company has not managed to attract more customers as it had hoped.  This is often due to one big flaw and that is:  The translation is incorrect and no way resembles the meaning of what is being meant.  This often happens in China but I can report to you that companies are learning very quickly.

Up until now, companies have been guilty of erecting signs that are written in perfect English but the Chinese translation does not come up to mark.  For example:  The company in question may want to advertise its menu.  It is an English menu but when it comes to producing it in Chinese, the translation has gotten lost.  On the other side of the coin, the same fatal mistake is often made by those companies operating in English-speaking territory.  The English translation is often lost in the midst of everything because the company did not take the time to have the translated text professionally translated by a professional translator.

Much damage can be done if a company does not spend the money to have its translations professionally translated.  There is everything to lose if a company tries to save money instead of trying to save face.  I will close by giving you a reference to check out.

In China, a restaurateur eager to attract an international clientele decided to display the restaurant's English name on the storefront next to its Chinese name. Unfortunately, the machine translation application he chose to perform the task ... Typographical conventions vary from one language to the next. For example, neither months nor days of the week are capitalized in French and Spanish. Do not be tempted to "correct" translated text to follow an English convention. ...

Myopic vs. Strategic Thinking

Greetings!  I'm Jill Christiansen, manager of writing services at www.sterlingcreations.ca.  To start the week off, I would like to focus on how we go about thinking; that is, our thought process when it comes to important decisions.  Narrow thinking versus broad thinking.  I have a very interesting article to share with you today and I hope you enjoy reading it.
Have a great day.

Myopic vs. Strategic Thinking

Before getting to the heart of today's article I'd like to first provide the following definition below:

"Myopic"
Unable or unwilling to act prudently; shortsighted.
Lacking tolerance or understanding; narrow-minded.
Lack of discernment or long-range perspective in thinking or planning.
The above definition aptly describes the policy of President Obama towards one of the greatest suppliers of oil to our country, Canada, as President Obama is leaning towards putting pressure on reducing emissions from Canadian oil sands production.

Obama Targets Emissions From Oil Sands

US President Barack Obama has signaled that Canada's oil sands industry should not be granted an exemption from strict regulations to limit emissions of greenhouse gases.

His stance could add to the already high costs of developing this vast resource which is increasingly regarded as one of North America's most secure sources of energy...

"What we know is that oil sands create a big carbon footprint," Obama said in a television interview with the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation Tuesday. "I think that it is possible for us to create a set of clean energy mechanisms that allow us to use things not just like oil sands, but also coal. The United States is the Saudi Arabia of coal, but we have our own homegrown problems in terms of dealing with a cheap energy source that creates a big carbon footprint."

Canada is the biggest foreign supplier of oil to the US, and in recent years a growing share of that oil has been derived from the oil sands region of northern Alberta which are estimated to hold a massive 173 billion barrels of oil.

About 780,000 barrels of oil per day are produced from the Alberta oil sands and exported to the US. Canada currently sells about 60% of its oil sands output to US refiners...

The recent steep fall in oil prices to current levels of around $40 a barrel have already had a big impact on plans to expand Canadian oil sands production.

Canadian bank TD Newcrest calculates that around 600,000 b/d of new output, originally scheduled to come on stream by 2010 or 2011, has been postponed.

The cost of oil production from tar sands is one of the most costly means of producing oil, that and deep water drilling. The collapse in oil prices is making production from the Canadian tar sands less economical, and slapping emissions controls and other regulation will only raise the cost for Canadian oil exporters to the U.S. The article mentions above that roughly 600,000 b/d of new production that was supposed to come on line over the next two years has been scrapped, and slapping regulation on Canadian oil producers will likely lead to even further cut backs in new production plans.

While the goal of reducing the carbon footprint is a noble venture, Obama's policies are likely to have unintended consequences. For example, who's to say that instead of spending billions to meet possible future regulations on oil sands production that Canadian oil exporters don't simply export their oil to China or other oil-starved countries?

When we eventually pull out of this economic mess we do not want to do so with a crippled oil industry. It will take years to bring new production on steam while demand can rebound much faster, leading to insufficient supply to meet reviving demand from emerging markets that will push oil prices up quickly. With oil production projects already being dropped left and right, one of the worst things we can do prior to an economic recovery is to alienate our top suppliers.

Canada is currently our number one supplier of crude oil, surpassing Mexico in late 2005 as Mexico's giant Cantarell oil field is in decline. Internal demand coming from the Middle East is eating into their export levels, which can be seen with declining exports from Saudi Arabia even before world economic growth collapsed in 2008. Furthermore, Hugo Chavez, no fan of the U.S., is diverting more of his exports to China. These trends can be seen in the figure below that shows exports from our top four oil exporters peaking between 2006-2007, and rising oil demand coming from oil export countries.

Source: Bloomberg

Source: CIBC World Markets

In stark contrast to the U.S. policy shift of alienating the top crude exports to our country, China is acting more like a vulture and opportunist by utilizing the economic crisis to its advantage with their sizable foreign exchange reserves, peaking off the weak to their advantage as the following articles illustrate.

Credit crunch plays into China's shopping plans

With the world suffering through a major credit crunch, China has suddenly gone shopping.
Beijing said Friday that one of its big state-owned banks, China Development Bank, agreed to lend Petrobras, the Brazilian oil giant, $10 billion in exchange for a long-term supply of oil.
That investment came after similar deals were signed this week with Russia and Venezuela, bringing China's total oil investments this month to $41 billion...

Venezuela got a $6 billion loan from China and agreed to increase its oil exports to the country, bringing China's total investment in the country to $12 billion. In Brazil, China signed a $10 billion "loan-for-oil" deal that guaranteed the country up to 160,000 barrels a day at market prices.

And in Beijing this week, Prime Minister Wen Jiabao met his Russian counterpart after China agreed to loan Russia's struggling oil giant, Rosneft, and Russia's oil pipeline company, Transneft, $25 billion in exchange for 15 million tons of crude oil a year for 20 years.

"This is heavy energy diplomacy," said Philip Andrews-Speed, director of the energy policy center at the University of Dundee in Scotland. "If you need money you go to where the money is, and today, China's the place."

China, Russia: A Pipeline Connection, an Act of Desperation?

China and Russia struck a deal that will give Russian energy firms Transneft and Rosneft loans to increase East Siberian oil field development and production and to connect the Eastern Siberia-Pacific Ocean pipeline to China. In return, China will receive about 300,000 barrels per day of oil for the next 20 years. Russia might have made the deal out of economic desperation as its state-owned energy firms feel the pain of evaporating credit, economic woes and low oil prices...

And the Chinese got a steal: Although not all of the contract's subtleties are likely out in the open right now, reimbursement for the loan means that the Chinese have purchased Rosneft crude for only about $11.40 a barrel once interest is figured in — about one-third of what Russia's crude fetches on the open market right now. The Russians have essentially locked the fate of their Far East strategy to the whims of Chinese energy policy, and this is a compromise that could reveal how financially desperate Russia is.

Brilliant, purely brilliant! That is what strategic thinking is called! China, concerned about their U.S. reserves being devalued by U.S. monetary policy, is exchanging their holdings for long-term oil contracts from countries all over the world, locking in oil prices at exceptional levels, like the $11.40/barrel estimate for the Russian deal.

Over the past decade world oil production growth has been roughly stagnant for most oil producing regions, while Russia was one of the few bright spots this decade, though production growth stagnated in the last few years as capital expenditures in the region began to slow. Now with the recent deal inked by China and Russia, China has just secured direct oil access to one of the few oil regions that showed sizable production growth this decade. When world economic growth turns up, which it eventually will, China will have strategically positioned resources to allow their growth to continue, and has done so at rates 92% below last year's peak and current prices!

Probing the Depths of the Bottom

While China may be preparing for the eventual economic recovery, it certainly isn't here. Looking at the leading economic indicator for the OECD shows that the rate of change has nearly reached the levels of the 73/74 recession, currently declining at a 7.15% year-over-year (YOY) pace. While developed economies were the first to contract, the high-flying BRIC economies are quickly playing catch up as the chart of BRIC industrial production rates shows below.

Gryphon Financial's First To The Trade
SIX FEET UNDER YOUR ACCOUNT
Dear Friends,

I write to you today to inform you about a most astonishing opportunity. Presently, a limited collection of readers spurred by the legendary trading guru John Gage and his radical new Gryphon Financial's First To The Trade system are amassing a mind-boggling amount of profits at an equally astonishing rate of speed.

Point of fact, these readers have reeled in 26 successful plays out of 28 beginning in January of 2008. For you baseball enthusiast's, that's a .929 batting average. For the laymen, it's the equivalent of swinging at a beach ball with a tennis racquet... which at the end of the day brought in an accumulated total of 2,680% in gains.

The single play gains have tallied 155%, 175%, 190%, 267%, 387% and greater still. This is all the more extraordinary when you consider the markets have fallen some 20% in the midst of these gains, and it makes such astounding precision in picks all the more remarkable.
If you had been one of these fortuitous readers who had received these exceptional opportunities, and you simply placed just $5,000 down into each trade, you'd currently be perched atop $183,600.

Right about now you must be thinking this sounds too good to be true, but as I am about to explain... it's true alright, and here is one reason why...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The economic numbers above illustrate the degree of the economic contraction currently underway but do not tell us when the bottom may be in for crude oil. For this we turn to equities as the stock market serves as a useful discounting mechanism for economic data, and thus oil prices. Perhaps "THE" leading indicator for oil prices may be the Chinese stock market, as the Shanghai Index peaked nearly a year prior to the top in oil prices, and the recent break of the down trend that has been in place since 2007 in the Shanghai Index may be signaling a bottom for crude oil ahead. The 50 day moving average (MA) for the Shanghai index served as rally killers for the past year and has done so for oil prices as well. Coming off the October lows the Shanghai Index has staged an impressive rally, breaking above its 50d MA and now assaulting its 200d MA. A move above the 200d MA on the Shanghai Index would be a major positive for oil as it would signal that Chinese equities were discounting an economic bottom and recovery ahead.

Oil has yet to break through its 50d MA and that would be the first step for oil prices to turn more constructive, and the 200d MA is more than 100% above current prices, indicating we may see a prolonged period of consolidation before oil can move above its 200d MA.

Source: StockCharts.com

Also hinting at a potential recovery in oil prices is the MSCI Asian Ex-Japan Index, which typically leads oil prices by 210 days. The bottom in the index in October and stabilization may be signaling the same for oil ahead. If the Asian Ex-Japan Index can best its January highs it is likely that crude oil may follow suit and signal that the low is in. Corroborating the MSCI Asia Ex-Japan Index is the Korean Kospi Index, though it typically leads oil and the CRB Index by 168 days (24 weeks).

Source: Bloomberg

Source: Bloomberg

One final indicator that points to a final bottom in oil is my commodity currency index below that has failed to breach its October lows, and has typically lead oil prices by roughly a month. If the commodity currency index can breach its January highs then we can likely expect oil to break above its January highs of $48.59/barrel, which would also lead to a break above its 50d MA, providing further support that the bottom is in.

Source: Bloomberg

While the above indicators point to a potential bottom in crude oil, if a market rally in global equities stalls and then equities breach their prior lows, then all bets are off in terms of the final lows in oil prices. However, if equities continue to move to new highs and rise above their 200d moving averages, then the bottom is likely in for oil. If oil has indeed bottomed then I hope that President Obama not only supports alternative energy, but moves to secure our oil supplies or more and more will be directed towards China's shores. The U.S. is at a critical juncture in terms of our energy future as Mexican oil production is in decline, Venezuela directing exports to China, Saudi Arabian internal demand cannibalizing its exports, and Canada serving as one of the few promising suppliers to the U.S. If President Obama moves to implement greater regulation on Canadian oil sands, he will likely be shooting the U.S. economy in the foot, and we can expect higher oil prices than what is necessary.

As President Obama has made an about face in regards to statements made about China's unfair currency manipulation that could spark trade wars, let's hope his counselors can help him do the same with his plan of putting further regulation on Canadian oil sands exports, or we may lose the goodwill of our number one oil supplier.

The most profitable single trade of all time revealed for the
first time to the first 100 to subscribe!
FACT: 99% of investors do not have a clue how to trade the markets. They ride the crashing wave of buying the highs and selling the lows. Only the strong and truly savvy are able to will and manipulate their trades and continue to profit from Wall Street.

For the very first time, we're revealing a secret strategy to the first 100 subscribers. This bear market strategy is so powerful, government politicians have been trying to outlaw it for years!

This controversial and secretly held technique has made a small select few billionaires. One in particular is our head trader, and owner of Gryphon Hedge Fund - Kenneth Maseka, who in one day alone destroyed a particular company and packed more than $190 million inside a 24 hour stretch!

As we write this report, we should firmly say that this may be the only way to realize triple digit gains over the upcoming year. And for the first time in the history of the company, we are letting 100 investors into our secret and private group.

For over 100 years, this ruthless group has used this secret strategy to make BILLIONS. Over the last century, this private group of "THE TEN"... 10 traders working in unison since 1991, these quiet stock market masters have used this one simple technique to turn wounded weak stocks into BILLIONS.

But, remember of all God's creatures, the wolf has the greatest instinct to pray on the weak and will only let others in to their pack on the unanimous vote - you must be hand selected by "THE TEN" to even be considered for this private service. Typically reserved only to the qualified investor.

Message from the president
Dear readers:
Summer 2009 is here and I would like to take this opportunity to wish all of you an enjoyable summer.  We have just completed our second quarter and despite many challenges we have managed to keep our heads above water and we are optimistic that the third quarter will bring us some new and exciting opportunities.  We have had to retool some of our services because of the continuing economic downturn but at the same time, we have managed to forge ahead in other areas.

We have restructured our translation department after having sold our translation websites.  We have expanded our writing services staff and have managed to snag some very exciting opportunities and our accessibility team has been on the march.  Our researchers have become more involved in supporting our writing team and all teams are looking forward to an improved third quarter.

On behalf of the staff of Sterling Creations, I thank you for your continuing support and feedback and encourage you to keep your comments coming.

The second quarter in review
The second quarter for Sterling Creations was one of many challenges but there were a few bright spots.  Our president Donna traveled to Vancouver on April 30 to deliver the keynote speech at the Annual General Meeting of the Alliance for the Equality for Blind Canadians and the theme of her speech was "Keep on fighting the good fight."  On May 03 Donna was elected to the board of the AEBC as the second vice president and she was extremely excited and honoured to have been elected to this post.  Donna is looking forward to working with her fellow board members and she would like to thank Denise Sanders, John Rae, and Robin East for having extended the invitation to her to make the keynote speech.

Donna's charter challenge against the Canadian Government continues to move along.  On March 31, Donna was cross examined by the Government's lawyers and faced a barrage of almost 200 questions.  Whereas it had been hoped that the Government's lawyers would have spent their time cross examining Donna on matters directly pertaining to the challenge, they chose to attack her personal character instead but at the end of it all the BakerLaw group of lawyers were extremely pleased with how things went.  BakerLaw is representing Donna and she is being greatly supported by many including the AEBC.  Her chief expert on accessibility is one of the best in the world; Jutta Treviranus who has given up countless hours of her personal time because of her belief in this challenge.  Donna is suing the Canadian Government over their inaccessible websites and unequal access to information on the Internet.

In May, Sterling Creations sold its 2 translation websites to a dynamic Toronto based company called Avalanche Networks; a company that specializes in helping businesses to obtain top rankings on Google, Yahoo, and other top search engines.  At the same time, Avalanche Networks has hired our writing team to write web content for their websites that presently number almost a thousand.  This is going to be a very exciting time for our writing and research teams as they will be required to research and write short articles on a multitude of wide ranging subjects.

In the second quarter, the writing team also continued to work with clients in Britain to ghost write a fiction book and the bloggers were hard at work as well.  In addition, the research and writing teams continued to provide support services to Donna in her editorials and blogs.

Our translation team will continue to serve our present clients but on a smaller scale.  This will not however diminish their appetite for opportunities.  During the second quarter, they provided services in Spanish to several clients in Toronto and Europe and are hoping to provide some exciting services in French to two new European clients.

Our accessibility team managed to create some work for themselves; working with two Canadian based clients as well as one from the United States and they too are optimistic that things will improve for them in the third quarter.

So what's in store for Sterling Creations in the third quarter?  Hard work to keep ahead of our competition.  An exciting partnership with Avalanche Networks.  The development of a potential opportunity with one of its partners; MIAD, Systems, a Toronto based computer company that will include our accessibility team.  More affiliations and partnerships for our writing team to produce articles for online newsletters and magazines.  Donna's work with the AEBC and her continuing charter challenge.  Continuing opportunities for our translation team.
