An unenviable position

An unenviable position
By Donna J. Jodhan

In these  hard economic times it is not very difficult to find a CEO or president who has unwittingly found themselves in an unenviable position; because of either financial or lack luster performance problems on the part of their companies.  No doubt about it!  Times are hard and organizations and companies of all types and sizes are feeling the crunnch.  From profit-making to not-for-profit and charitable entities it's the same but for John Rafferty, the new CEO at the CNIB, it is even more difficult.  This should not come as a shocker or shaker to any keen observer on matters pertaining to the CNIB.

In the general scheme of things, most CEOs often find themselves in trouble because of such things as mismanagement, poor company performance, or something along these lines but for John Rafferty the story is quite unique.  This particular CEO was in trouble even before he started his first day in office and why?  Because he is sighted and he was chosen to run an organization whose clients are blind and visually impaired.  Something that he cannot change; he is sighted.

In early April, I went to Mr. Rafferty's office at his invitation for an informal chat and I must say that I was pleasantly surprised.  Now, before you start yelling and screaming at me please allow me to explain. Up until then, I had never had the pleasure of visiting the office of a CNIB CEO so imagine my surprise when I received a phone call inviting me to meet with MR. Rafferty.  I did my best to leave my pre-conceived notions and speculations behind and I was glad that I had done so.  As a brisk spring wind tapped continuously at MR. Rafferty's office window, this very polished and polite gentleman listened, interjected, and asked many questions.  He was eager to hear my opinions and was honest enough to tell me that in part, he had asked me in because of an editorial that I had written a few weeks previous in which I had clearly stated why there was so much anger being directed towards the CNIB and towards his appointment as the new CEO.

In turn, I was as honest as I could be with him and as I left the building about an hour and a half later, I could not help but have very mixed feelings.  On the one hand, I felt that MR. Rafferty despite his best intensions would find it almost impossible to bridge the gap between client and agency and on the other I prayed that somehow this new man could find a way to regain the trust and confidence of blind and visually impaired Canadians.  To say that there has been a lot of bad blood between the CNIB and its clients is putting it a tad mildly.  To say that the blind and visually impaired community would be willing to welcome MR. Rafferty with open arms would be an under statement and an insult to all.  To say that MR. Rafferty would have an even chance of making believers out of non believers could be compared to saying that snow will fall in Toronto in the month of August.

Former Prime Minister Pierre Elliot Trudeau once said "You don't have to be likable to be popular" and these days MR. Rafferty certainly seems to fit this bill.  What can he do to move out of his tight corner?  How can he throw this menacing monkey off his back and at the same time convince the blind and visually impaired community that despite not being blind, he is the right man for the job?  What can he do in order to win over his detractors?  I dare say that he will probably have to slip on his surgical gloves and use his skills and experience to perform major plastic surgery on this very damaged landscape.

This landscape along with its rights holders have been badly bruised and battered for too many years now and it is time for it to be repaired.  For too long, the CNIB as an agency has failed to communicate effectively with those they call clients choosing instead to go about their business autonomously and often heavy handedly.  The time has come to repair the bridge of communications in order to save the future of our kids; those innocent little ones who are already in our midst and those who will be born with some sort of a visual impairment in the future.  They are the ones who stand to lose the most if we continue in this manner.  They are innocent bystanders and their only crime is that they are victims of unfortunate circumstances.  They are the ones who will suffer the most because they will be deprived of their rightful inheritance; their right to an equal future.

History will be the final judge of MR. Rafferty's term in office; not us.  He has been given the unenviable task of repairing a sinking ship and trying to raise its sails.  He will have to retrain and reshape his crew to take on the challenges of a shifting landscape with rights holders who are no longer prepared to sit idly by; many of whom would be only too happy to see this ship sink for good to be replaced by a new one.  One that they can help build.  The problem here is that at the present time, this is the only ship visible in the harbour but it would not be surprising to see a brand new spanking one appear in the not too distant future.  MR. Rafferty's first few months have been busy ones with him traversing the country to meet with persons within and outside of his organization and this to me is an excellent start.

The road ahead will be a very long and challenging one for this new CEO and he can expect to be placed under close scrutiny as he attempts to walk the straight and narrow.  He has started out with tremendous odds being placed against him for failure but anything and everything is possible.  I am sure that he will get used to having all kinds of things written and said about him but that will be the least of his problems.  For now, we have to accept that he is the new captain and only time will tell.  Maybe and just maybe, Captain Rafferty might just be able to resurrect this sinking ship or we'll wait to see what history has to say.  MR. Rafferty can take solace in knowing that there is nothing against him personally; rather, the guns of malcontent are against an agency and its systemic difficulties.
I'm Donna J. Jodhan wishing you a terrific day.

Top 20 commedy holiday complaints

Greetings!  I'm Nico Trimoff, manager of accessibility services at www.sterlingcreations.ca.
As the busy summer season approaches, and we are not really too certain if or many persons will be traveling across the seas, I would like to brighten up your day with an article that pokes a bit of fun at holiday goers.
You can take it seriously or pay attention to it.
Hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
I'm Nico Trimoff your accessibility services manager wishing you a great day.

These are GENUINE from ABTA and Thomas Cook

20 of the most ridiculous complaints made by holidaymakers to their travel
agent, taken from research by Thomas Cook and ABTA.

* A tourist at a top African game lodge overlooking a waterhole, who spotted
a visibly aroused elephant, complained that the sight of this rampant beast
ruined his honeymoon by making him feel "inadequate".

* A woman threatened to call police after claiming that she'd been locked in
by staff. When in fact, she had mistaken the "do not disturb" sign on the
back of the door as a warning to remain in the room.

* "The beach was too sandy."

* A guest at a Novotel in Australia complained his soup was too thick and
strong. He was inadvertently slurping the gravy at the time.

* "Topless sunbathing on the beach should be banned. The holiday was ruined
as my husband spent all day looking at other women."

* We bought 'Ray-Ban' sunglasses for five Euros (£3.50) from a street
trader, only to find out they were fake."

* "No-one told us there would be fish in the sea. The children were
startled."

* "It took us nine hours to fly home from Jamaica to England it only took
the Americans three hours to get home."

* "My fiancé and I booked a twin-bedded room but we were placed in a
double-bedded room. We now hold you responsible for the fact that I find
myself pregnant. This would not have happened if you had put us in the room
that we booked."

* "I compared the size of our one-bedroom apartment to our friends'
three-bedroom apartment and ours was significantly smaller."

* "The brochure stated: 'No hairdressers at the accommodation'. We're
trainee hairdressers - will we be OK staying here?"

* "There are too many Spanish people. The receptionist speaks Spanish. The
food is Spanish. Too many foreigners."

* "We found the sand was not like the sand in the brochure. Your brochure
shows the sand as yellow but it was white."

* "We had to queue outside with no air conditioning."

* "It is your duty as a tour operator to advise us of noisy or unruly guests
before we travel."

* "I was bitten by a mosquito - no-one said they could bite."

* "I think it should be explained in the brochure that the local store does
not sell proper biscuits like custard creams or ginger nuts."

* "It's lazy of the local shopkeepers to close in the afternoons. I often
needed to buy things during 'siesta' time - this should be banned."

* "On my holiday to Goa in India, I was disgusted to find that almost every
restaurant served curry. I don't like spicy food at all."

* "We booked an excursion to a water park but no-one told us we had to bring

Facebook can drive more traffic than Google

Greetings!  I'm Mark Micheau, manager of research services at www.sterlingcreations.ca.
Today, I'd like to show you how Facebook can drive more traffic to your website than Google.  Surprise to hear me say this?  You shouldn't be and I have an article to back me up.  This article has been written by a very knowledgeable source and I urge you to read it.
I'm Mark Micheau your research services manager wishing you a great day.

Facebook Can Drive More Traffic Than Google
Chris Crum | Staff Writer

Ways Businesses Can Get the Most Out of Facebook

I recently discussed Twitter as a great source of traffic to sites, but the even more popular Facebook can do and is doing the same thing. In fact, reports have Facebook driving even more traffic than Google to some big-name sites.

Facebook gets over a third of the number of unique visitors that Google does according to comScore. And it continues to grow. Compete shows the lines between Google and Facebook getting closer together:

"It seems inevitable that, given Facebook's sheer scale (180 million registered users and counting), it would at some point start referring a lot of users to some sites, but the development is surprising," says AdAge's Michael Learmonth. "Web users go to Google to figure out where to go next; they go to Facebook to, well, hang out."

If Facebook's growth continues the way it has been, perhaps it should be considered Google's greatest threat (when I say threat, I mean competition) - maybe not in general search, but in terms of where advertisers are spending their money. Certainly in the foreseeable future, people will continue using Google to search, and advertisers will continue to spend money advertising with them (probably even more now that they are doing more targeting), but Facebook also targets, and it's not going to be overlooked. It could put a dent into AdWords revenue.

Even within search advertising, Facebook should probably not be counted out. "Much of the Facebook-driven traffic comes from links that members post via areas like 'Notes' and photos," notes Tameka Kee at paidContent.org. "If Facebook's influence as a traffic source continues to rise, the next step would be to figure out how to monetize the traffic to those areas with paid search. That would be one way to entice Microsoft to renew its search deal (and give Microsoft a better return on its $240 million investment in the social net)."

That's an interesting thought, considering Microsoft's lack of any mindblowing new features coming from its own search engine rebranding. They don't have any real-time search features planned for Kumo, but Facebook has its own search (and it's getting more Twitter-like).

So What Can Businesses Get Out of Facebook?

Many of the tactics I listed about Twitter can be applied with Facebook too. That includes:

- Traffic obviously. Social networks have taken over email in terms of popularity. Facebook is the top dog and continues growing rapidly.

- People can "opt in" to be your friend and see your messages. This means your messages will be targeted specifically to people who are interested in your product. It's a great way to get announcements to loyal customers.

- Just like Twitter, it can be used as a great tool for customer service, provided somebody keeps up with it.

- You can interact with the public while increasing brand awareness.

- You can watch what people are saying on Facebook about your business and use that information to manage your online reputation.

- Facebook advertising. They provide targeted ads (based on user profiles) and as mentioned above, Facebook gets a third of what Google does (that's a lot) in unique visitors. - Facebook apps (including one that will let you post right to Twitter from Facebook) make the possibilities near endless. Many apps even have further advertising opportunities.

- Twitter has a great many of the same advantages (and is certainly growing rapidly as well), but it also has a lot of skeptics. Facebook is much more widely accepted as a great social network.

The translation profession

Top of the day to you!  I'm Donna J. Jodhan, president of www.sterlingcreations.ca.
Today, I'd like to spend some time chatting about the translation profession.

The translation profession

There is a very real problem when it comes to maintaining quality control over translated documents.  If you do not speak the language that the language is either being translated from or translated to, then how can you really tell if the document has been properly translated?

So many companies make the colossal error of judging the finished product on back translation.  That is, for example, a translation from Chinese to English is judged on its similarity to the original English.  Back translation is really not a good way to judge the quality of a translation.  Instead, companies should really be taking the time to hire skilled and professional translators to perform their work.  In addition, they should deploy a team that consists of something like this:

1 translator to translate, a second to proofread.  Something like a tag team.

In addition, they should use their translators to translate from a second language to their mother or native tongue.  Never a good idea to do it the other way.  So, Use Spanish-speaking translators to translate from English to Spanish provided that the translator's Spanish is the first language and English is the second language.  In like manner, use English -speaking translators to translate from Spanish to English provided that the translator's first language is English and their second language is Spanish.

Tag teams as I refer to them is a really good way to ensure quality control over translations.  Forget about using back translation to do this.

I will close by giving you a reference to review.

        Translation Profession

How can companies know whether a translation done by an outside service is accurate when the document is in accurate when the document is in a language they don't understand? ... The company then judges the quality of the Chinese to English or "back translation," by its similarity to the original English. While this desire for quality control is understandable, back translations are not in companies' best interests, says Siri Karm Singh Khalsa, ...

LIE #2: Small Stocks Get Bashed By Recessions

Greetings!  I'm Jill Christiansen, manager of writing services at www.sterlingcreations.ca.
Today, I would like to share an article with you that focuses on how small stocks really perform during a recession.  There are many misconceptions out there when it comes to how these types of stocks really perform during these times and for those of you who like these types of investments; then this article is for you.
I'm Jill Christiansen your writing services manager wishing you a great day.

LIE #2: Small Stocks Get Bashed By Recessions

How to Use the
RECESSION
to turn $1 into $80

Did you know that it is a lie that recessions are bad news for stocks?

Did you know, that when the shares get smaller, the best companies grab more of it? And investors are rewarded for their aggression with higher stock prices.

Guess what? It is happening RIGHT NOW!

I'm Marcus Thorne and I am telling you today the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth about recession and how you can cash in RIGHT NOW.

Use the bad times to turn $10 into $80.

Listen, no one else is telling you this kind of thing, listen carefully.

LIE #1: Recessions Create Bear Markets

There has been 11 past recessions; the S&P has posted an approximate average of 12% annual return. That is more than the market has returned in times of profitable expansion.

Why, you ask?

Because markets are moved by investor psychology and mentality, and economies are moved by hard core fact and fundamentals. So a bear market can happen in the best of economic times- case in point 1997's bear market.

Bear markets often rally by 30% or even more simply because investors expectations are altered uphill after all hope has been given up.

Isn't that the situation today?

LIE #2: Small Stocks Get Bashed By Recessions

Remember when the tech bubble burst? Qualcomm crashed and burned. The $100 stock quickly became a $12 nightmare.

Qualcomm was still small enough to regroup. It rethought its business plan, left hardware and built an academic asset portfolio. Now it allows others to drape synthetics around their suggestions.

Qualcomm is worth $30 today.

There are many "Qualcomms" in today's market. I'll tell you about a few in a minute. But what you need to know is if you had invested that $10 in this "broken" tech stock is worth $80 right now. WHY? Because bad times forced Qualcomm to change their game plan.

LIE #3: The Big Guys Ride the Recession Storm Best

Listen the big Stocks can scale back, close divisions, merge, and fasten their sails for a long bumpy ride.
Change a business plan? Almost unheard of - no?

Beside those few giants that are too huge to fall are all the others, too large to thrive. Let's not forget about the dreaded credit they need to fund pensions, pay bonuses, pay the rent, cover obligations and appease unions. Currently, you would have to pay out 6%, 13%, even 21% to fund big, complicated long-term obligations.

No one and I mean no one can survive, never mind flourish paying 21% interest rates on new loans!
Now do you see why BIG STOCKS may be a recession trap?

LIE #4: Everyone Does Much Worse During a Recession

Consumer spending changes, absolutely. Walmart thrives, Tiffany dies.

But did you consider consumers spend more on isolation. They may spend more upgrading their work skills, they spend more on so-called discounted clothing, and they spend more on low-priced entertainment.

For example, straight from Emerging Growth:

Sohu.com
Strayer Education
Urban Outfitters
Morrel
LIE #5: Hibernation Is The Rule Of Thumb For Recession

So you are ducking and covering, going into hibernation for the long haul? Probably the worst thing you could possibly do. If you sit around and wait until the next train comes into the station, it just might leave without you.

Things will absolutely get better - but they won't get better for you.

In the past 11 recessions the S&P has increased over 32% in the 1 year that followed the low, however most investors miss out on the profits because they wait to jump in when the risk gets higher.

Consider this... The 32% S&P gain was dwarfed by the growth of littler stocks. Check out the profits made early after the last recovery:

WIRELESS TELECOMM                    1704% PROFIT
LA GEAR                                             819%   PROFIT
ROSS COSMETICS                             503%   PROFIT
THREE FIVE SYSTEMS                       656%   PROFIT
SCI-MED LIFE                                     781%   PROFIT
LIE #6: THE U.S. GOT WHAT IT DESERVED

Did you hear the big myth that the United States has lost its way and have now allowed greed and envy take over their conscience? So we are deep troubled and for this we must be punished, we must pay! Oh Please...

During the tech bust of 2002 headlines read "The Path To Disillusionment" and there were stocks like Jo-Ann Stores that tripled, and Sierra Health soared over 140% and Pinnacle Entertainment nearly doubled...we would know because Gryphon Financial and The Wharton Insider investors had those positions.

Listen up guys....the U.S. is still a major player in innovation. And for every mistake we make like an AIG, there are 20 more game changing, capitalist, innovating successes, here's a few like...

Jos. A. Banks
Fuel Systems
Stanley
And you'll find so many more on GYRPHON FINANCIAL and The WHARTON INSIDER'S buy lists, access here.

Here's Your New Beginning: START HERE

Here's Your First Buy
Want proof to what I am saying is true? Fuel Systems - the sales are up over 60%, earnings went from low to highs of over $18 Million. The forecast - sunny and bright and the stock flew up 45% in hours! Watch the panic this week and I am not just talking about Fuel Sytems.

Modify or Perish
Obama is mandating - the effects are already being seen - the main concerns have changed
25% Renewable electricity resources by 2025
Energy efficiency improvements by 50%
Major profit taxes on Gas Companies
NO funding on gas and oil exploration
Suntech jumped 69%, Sunpower 51% and Canadian Solar 59% just in anticipation of Obama.

But let us not forget, as big as Solar energy is the priority changed to energy storage technology...

Or formally known as batteries.

It's a-once-in-a- Lifetime Thing
So you see my friends, a $20 Billion business is going to dive into being a $100 Billion business. Think about it. This IPO for a battery company called A123 Systems has a arrangement going with Mercedes Benz to get them "electric."

Check this out... Solar is valued at about 6 times sales right now, rechargeables right now are valued at $.25 times sales!

This is an incredible time to buy and an incredible opportunity that Gryphon Financial and The Wharton Insider has uncovered...This is a fast five finger discount in this neighborhood.

DON'T WAIT, you only have a FEW DAYS to cover this position!

How better customer service to special needs consumers can increase revenues plus more

Hello there!  We the team at www.sterlingcreations.ca are pleased to bring you an editorial by our president Donna J. Jodhan.
Have a great weekend.

How better customer service to special needs consumers can increase revenues plus more

This is a statement that I preach to my clients every day.  If you improve your customer service to special needs consumers then there is no doubt that you will accomplish some very astounding benefits such as:
You will increase your revenues, you will expand your customer base, you will improve your business image, and you know what?  You will become the darling of your industry.  Why you ask?

By improving your overall customer service to special needs consumers, you will show that you truly understand your consumers.  You will also show that you are not just thinking of today, but also tomorrow and way beyond.  You will show that you are listening to what your consumers are demanding and not tell your consumers what they should be demanding as too many companies tend to do.  For make no mistake about it!  As the years roll by, special needs consumers are going to be making up more and more of your consumer base and who are those special needs consumers that I dare to mention?

Seniors, those afflicted with disabling diseases, the blind and visually impaired, those who are hard of hearing, those afflicted with cognitive and learning disabilities, the physically challenged, the print disabled, those whose first language is not English, and?  Yes, those busy professionals, the single parents, and parents with young children.  You see, many, many consumers with special needs for you to improve your customer service to.  Be nice to them and they will keep coming back to you and you know what?  Their loyalty will be undying.

I'm Donna J. Jodhan wishing you a terrific day and weekend.

Tobacco leaves could help cure diabetes and arthritis

Greetings!  I'm Nico Trimoff, manager of accessibility services at www.sterlingcreations.ca.
I found a very interesting article to share with you today.  One that is of interest to diabetics and if the research referred to in this article is what it says, then it could be great news for many folks, nut just diabetics.
So, please read on.
I'm Nico Trimoff your accessibility services manager wishing you a great day.

Tobacco leaves could help cure diabetes and arthritis

Tobacco plants that act as medicine factories have been created by
scientists in order to help come up with treatments for conditions such as
diabetes and arthritis.

The plants produce biological chemicals in their leaves that could one day
be used to treat autoimmune and inflammatory diseases.

Italian researchers grew tobacco plants containing genes for interleukin-10,
a molecule that could be used to treat a number of conditions.

Enough of the molecule was generated for the leaves potentially to be used
without having to extract and purify the chemical.

The next step will be to feed the leaves to mice with autoimmune diseases
and see if their HYPERLINK

Ultimately the scientists hope to use the plants in combination with other
biologically active chemicals to combat insulin-dependent, or Type 1,
diabetes and arthritis.

Study leader Professor Mario Pezzoti, from the HYPERLINK

Verona, said: "Transgenic plants are attractive systems for the production
of therapeutic proteins because they offer the possibility of large scale
production at low cost, and they have low maintenance requirements.

"The fact that they can be eaten, which delivers the drug where it is
needed, thus avoiding lengthy purification procedures, is another plus
compared with traditional drug synthesis."

The research is reported in the online journal BMC Biotechnology

The Internet's next thousand years

Greetings!  I'm Mark Micheau, manager of translation services at www.sterlingcreations.ca.
Ever wondered what the Internet could be like in the next thousand years?  Yes, we will all be somewhere else at that time but wouldn't it be fun to just speculate?  The Internet has become that illusive freight train that has taken on a life of its own and now as we all stand and watch, it is certainly going to change our lives for better or for worse.  I have an article for you to read and I hope you enjoy reading it.
I'm Mark Micheau your translation manager wishing you a great day.

The Internet's next thousand years
Thursday, February 19, 2009
The Internet has come a long way in 30 years, but it is still very much in its infancy. Vint Cerf, Google Vice President and Chief Internet Evangelist, who in a former life was one of the principle minds behind what we know as the Internet today, is looking far beyond just the next thirty years. He's thinking about the next thousand years.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Editor's Note: Probably the most interesting takeaway from our interview with Cerf is this question of how information will be preserved and retrieved a thousand years from now. Hard to imagine what technology then will be compatible with Word 2007, isn't it? Or HTML for that matter. There's a ton to talk about, so talk about it in the comments section.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Ninety-five percent of the universe is stuff we don't understand," Cerf told WebProNews anchor Abby Prince Johnson in an exclusive 20-minute interview. "The Internet is like that."

That gives Google, with the stated mission of organizing the world's information—a mission Cerf reiterates is one "we really believe in"—a formidable task. Google CEO Eric Schmidt once estimated such a task would take about 300 years to complete.

How's that for a long-term strategy?

Cerf says the immediate future of the Internet involves mobile advancements. "Everyone, I hope, will have this information window on their hip." The mobile sector isn't without its challenges, the least of which is, as Cerf put it, "keyboards suitable for people three inches tall." What do you think?

The biggest challenge facing the Internet, mobile or otherwise, is keeping the network open, and Cerf called on the Obama Administration to remain true to its commitment to creating "an equal opportunity network" in order to foster more innovation. Cerf says this innovation will be made possible via an open and readily accessible network. "Innovation on the network in part is a consequence of the freedom to try things out."

Cerf is a vocal supporter of Network Neutrality, and in 2008 posted a YouTube video announcing his endorsement of Barack Obama because of the candidate's pledge to take a stand against telecommunication giants like AT&T and Sprint seeking to profit by creating controlled "walled garden" networks similar to their wireless phone networks.

Opportunities will also increase as broadband speed increases and as the cost of technology goes down. Cerf notes that he bought two terabytes of disk memory last year, which would have cost him $200 million in 1979. He envisions, in the not too distant future, home devices interacting with each other thanks to higher broadband speeds and lower cost technology.

"It won't seem strange (to kids growing up around it) to interact with the refrigerator, even remotely," he said. Do you agree?

But there are much bigger concerns that lie far, far off in the future. In a thousand years, will computers still be able to understand all this information we humans worked so hard to archive? All of today's documentation—essays, articles, spreadsheets, media in general—are created with today's software.

"If that software should no longer be supported, you and I may have a vast quantity of bits we have stored that we don't know how to interpret anymore. They're just rotten bits. The big worry I have is that as time goes on, as we accumulate more digital information, if we don't preserve the ability to interpret the bits, they won't be useful anymore. One big scary possibility is that over a period of a thousand years, all of the accumulated digital information that we've stored away somewhere will no longer be understandable to our descendants. Historians, of course, will wonder what went on the early 21st Century if they don't know how to interpret a 1997 PowerPoint file."

Cerf says there are good economic reasons companies choose not to support software anymore, but something will need to be done so that once software is no longer supported, we will be able to preserve the information created with that software.

Managing resources to work better, not harder

Greetings!  I'm Jill Christiansen, manager of writing services at www.sterlingcreations.ca.
Ever wondered how you could get your financial resources to work better instead of harder?  Are you tired of trying and just failing?  Not sure what to do next?  Well, do I have an article for you to read.  This could be the beginning for you.
Please give it a read.
I'm Jill Christiansen your writing services manager wishing you a great day.

Managing Financial Resources To Work Better, Not Harder

As bleak reports of economic "doom and gloom" keep coming, the
Atticus recession series of special E-Lerts will provide you
with hands-on ideas on how to survive, and even thrive during
a recession, no matter how deep it might become.

This E-Lert features ways to improve managing financial
resources.

How do you know you need help managing the finances?

- Management is always reacting to a cash crisis.
- There is concern about having enough cash to meet the payroll.
- The same problems keep recurring despite repeated attempts to
fix them.
- There is never enough cash to carry the right level of
inventory.
- Customers are not paying on time.
- The bank is concerned because the business is at the top of
its operating line.

What strategy will allow the business to survive and prosper?

- Discount pricing of older, slow-moving stock to convert it to
cash.
- Send invoices immediately upon shipment if the business sells
on terms.
- Ensure that you have an effective credit approval system; a
customer's financial condition can change quickly in an economic
downturn.
- Have a system for prompt follow-up with late-paying customers
and apply it consistently so that your invoice is at the top of
the payment pile.
- Sell any fixtures or equipment that you don't need to use.
- Investigate alternative financing arrangements. Despite the
credit crunch, financing is available if you know where to look.
- Cash is the life blood of a business so manage it every single
day. Use it wisely.

Example

A client insisted they needed to increase their line of credit.
On assessing their situation we discovered they batch-prepared
customer invoices, delaying sending many of them out for weeks.
Switching to a system of preparing and sending invoices when
goods were shipped eliminated the need for increased financing.

What does a well-run operation look like?

- Cash is monitored every day.
- Collection procedures are followed consistently.
- No assets are collecting dust.
- Eliminating people or advertising and marketing is rarely the
answer.
- Maximizes the use if internal and external resources to
implement action.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This E-Lert was developed by Atticus Principal Bruce Johnstone
who helps clients focus on effective management of financial
resources. Reach Atticus by phone at 416.644.8795.

The unemployment picture

Hello there!  Hope everyone is getting ready to enjoy yet another lovely spring weekend.  We the team at www.sterlingcreations.ca are pleased to bring you an editorial by our president Donna J. Jodhan.  This editorial focuses on the unemployment picture among persons with special needs.
We wish you a great weekend.

The unemployment picture

This is a picture that does not seem to want to change.  It has been like this for too long and if we do not do anything about it in a concrete manner, then what?

As it stands today, over 70% of North Americans who are considered to be legally blind are unemployed and sadly this stat has not really changed for over 20 years now.  In addition, and on a per capita basis in comparison to the mainstream person and to others with disabilities, the majority of blind and visually impaired persons live below the poverty line; and there is more.  Blind and visually impaired persons are what they say at the bottom of the barrel when it comes to the employment of persons with disabilities.

Many companies and even governments often offer the reason that they are unable to find qualified blind and visually impaired applicants.  So many times I hear this quote:  "We don't get blind applicants who are qualified enough.  Not many blind persons are qualified enough."  In answer to this, I offer this opinion:  With more and more employers requiring applicants to complete online forms, it is so very difficult for blind and visually impaired persons to do this for the simple reason that these forms are not accessible and if a blind person decides to attempt the online application process, they need to depend on sighted assistance.  In addition to the online access barrier, there is the attitude barrier.  Two very daunting barriers; access and attitude.

So what do we do about this?  Time for us to stand up and be counted.  Time for us to unite as one and voice our concerns.  Time for us to be heard.

I'm Donna J. Jodhan wishing you a terrific day and weekend.

5 key principles of effective leadership

Greetings!  I'm Nico Trimoff, manager of accessibility services at www.sterlingcreations.ca.
Ever wondered why is it you are unable to become a better leader?  Are you seeking the magic solution?  Well, I have an article for you to check out.  One that speaks volumes when it comes to the 5 most important leadership principles.
So many of uss falsely assume that leadership is easy to attain.  Wrong; and this article will tell you why.
I'm Nico Trimoff your accessibility services manager wishing you a great day.

5 key principles of effective leadership

The following Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership(registered trademark)
were compiled by Jim Koozes and Barry Posner after getting responses from
thousands of people who were asked to share their "Personal Best" stories.
When leaders are at their personal best, they:

Model the Way
Leaders establish principles concerning the way people (constituents, peers,
colleagues, and customers alike) should be treated and the way goals should
be pursued. They create standards of excellence and then set an example for
others to follow. Because the prospect of complex change can overwhelm
people and stifle action, they set interim goals so that people can achieve
small wins as they work toward larger objectives. They unravel bureaucracy
when it impedes action; they put up signposts when people are unsure of
where to go or how to get there; and they create opportunities for victory.

Inspire a Shared Vision
Leaders passionately believe that they can make a difference. They envision
the future, creating an ideal and unique image of what the organization can
become. Through their magnetism and quiet persuasion, leaders enlist others
in their dreams. They breathe life into their visions and get people to see
exciting possibilities for the future.

Challenge the Process
Leaders search for opportunities to change the status quo. They look for
innovative ways to improve the organization. In doing so, they experiment
and take risks. And because leaders know that risk taking involves mistakes
and failures, they accept the inevitable disappointments as learning
opportunities.

Enable Others to Act
Leaders foster collaboration and build spirited teams. They actively involve
others. Leaders understand that mutual respect is what sustains
extraordinary efforts; they strive to create an atmosphere of trust and
human dignity. They strengthen others, making each person feel capable and
powerful.

Encourage the Heart
Accomplishing extraordinary things in organizations is hard work. To keep
hope and determination alive, leaders recognize contributions that
individuals make. In every winning team, the members need to share in the
rewards of their efforts, so leaders celebrate accomplishments. They make
people feel like heroes.

Is Gmail Google's Real Social Network?

Greetings!  I'm Mark Micheau, manager of research services at www.sterlingcreations.ca.
Today, I am here to query a growing concern and that is:  Is Gmail Google's main social network?  What is really going on in the head of this Internet giant?  You may think that it may be time for us to fine out?
Please read the article below and give us your feedback.  We'd love to hear your comments.
I'm Mark Micheau your research services manager wishing you a great day.

Is Gmail Google's Real Social Network?
Chris Crum | Staff Writer

Assessing Gmail After Five Years

The Past

Google's email service Gmail was launched to the public five years ago this week. Back then, the service turned the web email industry on its ear by offering an entire gigabyte of storage to users who were lucky enough to receive an invite. Small potatoes now, but that was a nice chunk of storage from an email service back then.

For some of us, it was also a chance to get a really good address with our real names in them. I chose a simple first name/last name approach. It had a nice ring to it after previous addresses with other services that I had to explain to people who still found them hard to remember. All of the good ones had already been taken at that point on all the other big-name services.

Gmail has grown by leaps and bounds since that time, and has gone through a ton of changes, and somehow still sits in beta. Who knows if that will ever change? I read an Ars Technica interview with Gmail's product manager Todd Jackson the other day in which he discussed the reason behind the beta label.

"We have very, very high standards for the product," Jaskson said. "as we do for all Google products. But we are not ready to come out of beta yet. There are a few things that we're working on, and once we meet a couple more of those criteria, we would love to come out of beta."

AT: Jackson said it is obviously stable enough for everyone to use--even stable enough for the business and Enterprise markets that Google is chasing with Google Apps. But the decision to drop Gmail's beta badge hinges on a few internal criteria (or, perhaps more accurately, feature requirements) that his team feels are still lacking.

He goes on to note that some requirements like a mobile site, POP, and IMAP services have already been checked off. But does anyone really care if Gmail's still in Beta? Many users have been happily using it for years and have no intention of leaving it behind despite an outage issue here and there. Even though it gets a whole lot of attention when it does happen, it really doesn't happen very often. Gmail is constantly adding new labs, making the service more customizable and useful in many respects. They are referred to as experiments, but they might as well be considered user preferences. I can't recall ever having been affected by one of these labs not working properly. I'm sure it's happened, but it's not an issue that is exactly plaguing the service.

SES NY: Opportunities for Advertisers in the Area of Paid Search

The Future

Google says it expects the changes over the next five years to be even more radical than over the past five. It's hard to tell just what will be in store. Google has been pretty tight-lipped about future plans for the service.

Hitwise recently reported that Gmail visits had surpassed visits to YouTube. That's pretty significant (especially since YouTube is the 2nd biggest search engine). They say that social networks are eclipsing email in popularity, and Google hasn't exactly been known for their social media attempts. I have a theory though that Gmail has kind of been Google's social network all along. Granted, it's a private social network, but with it, you can:

Send messages to friends

keep conversations with multiple friends together

embed videos/rich media in emails/chat messages

send messages to people beyond the Gmail wall

use search operators to bring up all photos /other media from any past messages

Account holders have profile pages with their picture
The Gmail account holder has access to a lot of social elements, yet it is not really considered a social network. It only makes sense that upcoming changes would highlight and expand upon such elements. And what if Google bought Twitter like so many have predicted?

No, Gmail's not exactly like Facebook. But Facebook's not exactly like MySpace, and Twitter's not exactly like Digg, and so on. Whether you agree with me or not, Gmail is here to stay, and I can't see a scenario that doesn't involve getting more social when every other property on the web seems to be doing just that. Luckily for Gmail (like email in general), it's been social since it's inception. Imagine what it could be with a few design changes.

Translation software opens up doors

Top of the day to you!  I'm Donna J. Jodhan, president of www.sterlingcreations.ca.
Today, I would like to focus my attention on how translation software has opened up doors for translators.

        Translation software opens up doors

This is a very hotly contested statement in the translation arena these days.  There are many who truly believe that translation software has become a menace to the translation industry because it takes away from the true professionalism of translation but on the other hand there are those who also truly believe that translation software has helped to open doors for many translators.

I would like to sit on the fence for this one.  I see both sides and I say this because of the following:

Translation software still has to go a long way before being able to provide translations that are professional, concise, and appropriate.  It lacks the ability to provide translations that are truly in the manner of the language of specific countries.  For example:  Many have told me that when they use translation software to translate from English to Spanish, often time, the translation produced is one that sounds like an English person translating into Spanish rather than a Spanish-speaking person translating from English to Spanish.

On the other hand, the advent of translation software has allowed many more persons to be able to work in foreign languages.  Many persons are now using translation software when they travel abroad and this is very good.  In addition, many students are using translation software to improve their written skills.  I am from the old school where I still believe that the human touch is the best way to translate.  That is, a real person can do a better job at translating.  However, it does not mean that they cannot use translation software to help them.  My final comment on this is that translation software has opened up many new doors.

I will close by giving you a reference to check out.

Well, today I would like to give you a gentle push to start climbing out of your holes.  Yes, it is time for us all to climb out of our protective holes and take the bull by the horns.  Time for us to start fighting back against this darn recession.  Time for us to show who is the boss!  We of course.
Take a look at the article below and use it to get motivated.
I'm Jill Christiansen your writing services manager wishing you a great day.

Attention ALL Options Traders:

This Strategy is for you! Come Fly With Us
ISN'T IT TIME TO CLIMB OUT OF YOUR HOLE AND GO WITH THE FLOW!
(YOU WILL UTTERLY HATE THIS!)

Are you stuck in a hole, with a hood over your head, can't take the roar of the battlefield all around you - whizzing by your head, you're scared to move, even more frightened to stay, well I have news for...

It most definitely doesn't have to be like this.

Not for you...and definitely not for us.

For sure it could take months...it could take even years... and it might possibly take years - the world markets pull themselves back together again.

You need a new strategy; a new way of thinking, a new way to invest that is profitable. Our "Go With the Flow" system is tried and true. It has been used for over 20 years in bull, bear, and chicken and pig markets!

But we must confess - our "Go With the Flow" system has never worked as well in the past as it has in the past 12 months.

We've been scooping up 10%...14%...32% gains in 15 days to 3 months on average ever since last September.

Trades like...

Bank of America making 81% in 4 days
Visa making 102% in 17 days
Hershey making 197% 32 days
Morgan Stanley making 52% in 32 days
There is NO other strategy out there doing this. Our "Go With the Flow" allows us to ride the  butterfly, get out of that cave and enjoy the sunlight of quick profits...all the while we are able to dodge the bullets.

I'd make a wager that the approach you are using isn't working as well as this, true?

So you're probably wondering why I said you would hate this, right? Well for a couple reasons I want you to hate this. It's expensive, it's for the experienced investor only, and our positions rarely last more than a couple months and at times a few days. It's all about option calls, shorts, ETF's and stocks, and it doesn't even have a regular scheduled newsletter, but the worst part is its addicting like the best drug or drink you have ever taken.

This strategy and the traders running it should be jailed by the DEA instead of being policed by the SEC.

HOW YOU CAN CRAWL OUT OF THAT HOLE AND
"GO WITH THE FLOW"
Are you speculating what Michael Warren and Marc Seigal have up their sleeve next for all you Option traders in this bear, bear market? Well, I have news for you... they are offering you an opportunity to make some additional capital using a strategy which is rangebound, with large volatility and with no concern about direction. Sound like something you would be interested in? Who wouldn't?

Dear Daily Option Traders,

Aren't we all in the position where we want to limit risk? I mean if I could tell you about a neutral strategy that's bullish on volatility, that has limited profit + limited risk, you would say what?

Listen to what investors are doing...

Alan constructed a plan to Sell 1 ITM Call, Buy 2 ATM Calls, and Sell 1 OTM Call. Using calls, he was able to construct the short butterfly by writing (selling) one lower striking in-the-money call, buying two at-the-money calls and writing another higher striking out-of-the-money call, giving him a net credit to enter the position. Sound tricky? It's not.... Read on...

Alan knows that maximized profit for the short butterfly is obtained when the underlying stock price rally pass the higher strike price or drops below the lower strike price at expiration. Alan picked stock option calls with adequate liquidity, with an open interest of at least 100, but preferably 500.

Here's the kicker - Alan profited from a rangebound stock with no capital outlay. He was able to cap off risk using this strategy, and he made considerably higher profit because the stock moved like an explosive!

Here's what he did...

Alan bought XYZ stock that was trading at $40 in June. Alan executed a short call butterfly by writing a JUL 30 call for $1100, buying two JUL 40 calls at $400 each and writing another JUL 50 call for $100. The net credit taken to enter the position is $400, which is also his maximum possible profit.

Upon expiration in July, XYZ has dropped to $30 and all the options expired worthless, and Alan gets to keep the entire initial credit taken as $400 profit. SCORE! And may I add Alan would of obtained this even if the stock had rallied to $50 or beyond! Now...why wouldn't you want to try this?
