An information society and a knowledge based economy

Greetings!  I'm Scott Savoy, editor of writing services at www.sterlingcreations.ca and today I am delighted to bring you the weekly editorial of our president Donna J. Jodhan.
Today, Donna has something to say about the challenges being faced by disabled persons in an information society and a knowledge based economy.  I invite you to read on.
Enjoy your weekend.

An information society and a knowledge based economy
By Donna J. Jodhan

Yes!  This is what is facing all of us today.  Every man, woman, and child; we are living in an information society and a knowledge based economy.  No shocker and no shaker.  What exactly am I referring to?  We are living in a society that is depending more and more on information in order to make ourselves more marketable to our economy.  In short, we are depending more and more on the Internet to help us become more knowledgeable.

So what does all of this mean for a disabled person?  How does this affect our lives as persons with disabilities?  As I see it, it means that we as persons with disabilities have to work much harder to keep up.  We need to become more vocal when it comes to what we need in order to live as normal a life as possible.  We need to lobby harder and become better agents and conduits of change.  How can we do this?  By creating more awareness for ourselves; we need to make society aware of who we are, what we need, and why and we need to do it in a constructive and sustained way.  We need to put more pressure on governments to make their websites accessible to all.  We need to work with companies to ensure that their websites can easily be accessed by everyone including us.  We need to go out there and educate others on why websites need to be made accessible to all.  We need to tell everyone that it is not a nice to have when it comes to accessible websites.  Rather, it is our right to have.

So often, governments tend to ignore our needs when it comes to making their websites accessible.  For some odd reason they fail to consider us as persons who need to gain access to information just like the mainstream person.  So we need to pressure them to fix this problem.  Many companies often ignore our needs and in like manner we need to do the same.  The need for information is only going to increase with time and the need for knowledge in order to function in our economy is only going to become more acute as well.  These two situations are probably not going to go away so we might as well get used to it.

We already face very heavy challenges in our lives as disabled persons and an information society and a knowledge based economy are two things that are poised to make our lives even more difficult.  A part of the solution is for us to recognize this and once we accept the inevitable, then we can start to work from there.

I'm Donna J. Jodhan wishing you a terrific day and weekend.

Your best American cities

Hello there!  I'm Donna J. Jodhan and this is my last chance in the month of November to try and win you over to my side of the fence.  Time for me to make one last try to convince you to join our weekly travel club.
It's lots of fun!  It's imaginative, and very exciting!  So pleas hop aboard and let's go!
Have fun and enjoy!

Week of November 28 2009:
Your best American cities

1. Springfield Massachusetts
This beautiful New England city is one of the oldest in America.
It is home to some of the finest educational institutions in the country and its close proximity to Hartford Connecticut makes it a natural part of Massachusetts's education corridor.
Springfield has a booming manufacturing industry and lots of victorian mansions, 19th century style houses, plus a lot more.
If you're seeking a city with something for you as a student, or for you as a thriving professional, then why not Springfield?

2. Honolulu Hawaii
Ah! But if you're seeking a city with more than just vacation spots, then Honolulu is the place for you.
Sunny times and sandy beaches are not the only thing that Honolulu has to offer.
Lots of opportunity for job advancement; in the banking and shipping industries.
Honolulu is the major trading and shipping base that links North America to Asia.
If you are seeking something more than sailing, ocean gazing, and surfing, then Honolulu should be on your priority list.
Important:  It is cheaper to live in Honolulu than it is to live in either San Francisco or New York.

3. St Louis Missouri
Are you seeking a city with oodles of great economic possibilities?
A city that is steeped in history; one of the largest in America?
A city that has the ability to host large events such as Olympic Games and World's fares?
A city that is rich in cultural roots; French and Spanish influences?
Then you should definitely visit St Louis; the gateway to the West.

4. Pomona California
Pomona is a unique city; a mix of the old and the new.
House and proud conscious residents who are determined to make Pomona one of the best cities in California.
A city with beautiful parks, friendly neighborhoods, and fares and festivals for all tastes and stages of life.
If you are seeking a city with a multi cultural flavor and one that has a promising future, then why not Pomona.

I'm Donna J. Jodhan bidding you a happy travel time.

Social Networks Leaking Users Data To Tracking Sites

Greetings!  I'm Mark Micheau, manager of research and translation services at www.sterlingcreations.ca.
Today, I would like to share an extremely important article with you; one that zooms in on something that social networks are or may be doing.  Something that may be infringing on your personal data and information.
I invite you now to read on.
Have a great day and a happy Thanksgiving to our American friends and customers.

Social Networks Leaking Users Data To Tracking Sites
August 29, 2009
http://www.WebProNews.com

Your personal information on social networks is being leaked to tracking sites. Will this cause you to reconsider using social networking?

Social Networks Leaking Users Data To Tracking Sites
Mike Sachoff| Staff Writer

Browsing profile linked to unique identifier

Many popular social networking sites typically make personal information available to companies that track users' browsing habits and allow them to link anonymous browsing habits to specific people, according to a new study by the Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI).

"When you sign up with a social networking site, you are assigned a unique identifier," says Craig Wills, professor of computer science at WPI.

"This is a string of numbers or characters that points to your profile. We found that when social networking sites pass information to tracking sites about your activities, they often include this unique identifier. So now a tracking site not only has a profile of your Web browsing activities, it can link that profile to the personal information you post on the social networking site. Now your browsing profile is not just of somebody, it is of you."

»» Do you worry about your data from Facebook or Twitter getting leaked to tracking sites? Let us know in the comments.
Social networks use third-party tracking sites to learn about the browsing habits of their users. Cookies are managed by a browser and contain information that allows tracking sites to build profiles of the websites visited by a user. Each time a user visits a new website, the tracking site can review those cookies to offer ads that might be relevant to the user.

Wills says social networks go to far by allowing the transmission of unique identifiers. "Users put a lot of information about themselves on social networking sites," said Wills.

"A lot of that information can be seen by other users, by default. There are mechanisms users can use to limit access to their information, but we found through previous research that most users don't take advantage of them."

With a unique identifier tracking sites could gain access to a users personal information. Wills says this could lead to having one's identity linked to inaccurate browsing profiles, depending on how many people use the same computer.

"Tracking sites don't have the ability to know if, for example, a site about cancer was visited out of curiosity, or because the user actually has cancer," said Wills. "Profiling is worrisome on its own, but inaccurate profiling could potentially lead to issues with employment, health care coverage, or other areas of our personal lives."

"Once someone is in possession of your unique identifier, there is so much they can learn about you. And even if tracking sites do not use the information themselves, can they guarantee that it will never find its way into other hands? For these reasons, we feel this issue is something that we should to be concerned about."

Does this make you concerned about using social media?

How Learning a Foreign Language Helps Your Kids | Home Education ...

Top of the day to you out there!  I'm Donna J. Jodhan and today I'd like to chat about how learning a foreign language can help your kids.

How Learning a Foreign Language Helps Your Kids | Home Education ...
By Donna J. Jodhan

Learning a second language these days is becoming more and more beneficial and the earlier in life that one does this, the better it would be.  In short, learning a second language when you are a kid could be extremely beneficial.  The world is becoming smaller and smaller because communication in foreign languages is growing and as a result more and more persons and companies are communicating with each other and with the growth in global trade this trend is only going to increase.

Learning a second language can be extremely important in the areas of government, the military, the legal profession, travel and hospitality, sales and marketing, translation, teaching, education, plus more.  More and more school districts are recognizing the importance of learning a second language and as a result they are now making it a requirement in order to graduate.

For kids as well as adults, learning a second language is really important and I am going to leave you with a really interesting reference to check out.  Please see below.

More and more school districts have added a foreign language to their graduation requirements. Of course it is important to have a solid grasp of the English. ... Other areas where knowing a second language is either beneficial or necessary include government, the military, law, sales and marketing, travel and hospitality, teaching, translation and communications. The good and bad of curve cuts

Greetings!  I'm Christian Robicheau, assistant editor of writing services at www.sterlingcreations.ca.
Today, I am delighted to present you with an editorial written by our president Donna J. Jodhan and today Donna discusses how curve cuts often become problems for blind and sight impaired persons.
I wish you a great day and happy shopping this weekend.

The good and bad of curve cuts
By Donna J. Jodhan

If you take the time to think about it, curve cuts can either be a blessing in disguise to many but at the same time it can also be a real curse to others.  For many it is a welcome relief while traveling along the sidewalks, but for many blind and visually impaired persons it is quite the opposite.  Shocker or shaker?  Probably a shocker to the mainstream pedestrian but neither shocker nor shaker to the blind and visually impaired walking wounded.

For those emergency medical technicians, curve cuts represent a great alternative and time saver when negotiating sidewalks in a hurry.  For a delivery person, it also saves time and energy when dragging heavy or clumsy packages.  For those in wheelchairs, it is a real bonus and the same could be said for moms with strollers but for those of us who are unable to see these new wonders!  It is not.

If a blind person is using a cane to travel then the picture is this:  They have great difficulty being able to tell the difference between the end of the sidewalk and the beginning of the street.  In essence, when they go to find a street corner, they find themselves not being able to tell where the actual street corner is and often time they find themselves wondering helplessly into the street.  It was easy for me when I had enough vision to tell the difference but now that I am almost totally blind I often find myself hesitating whenever I feel the sidewalk sloping downwards as I approach a street corner.  I am never sure where the actual corner is and in addition, I have no reference points to help me determine what ends where and what begins where.

I have had several clients and friends complain to me about this but what to do about it is very hazy at best.  Curve cuts do indeed benefit more people than not so I do not think that too many of those in authority would be very willing to listen.  So for the time being we may just have to put up with it all.

I'm Donna J. Jodhan wishing you a terrific day and weekend.

Water or coke?

Greetings!  I'm Nico Trimoff, manager of transcription and accessibility services at www.sterlingcreations.ca.
Today, I have some very interesting reading to share with you and this is mainly for those of you who love drinking coke.
I wish you a great day.

Water or Coke?

WATER

#1. 75% of Americans are chronically dehydrated.
(Likely applies to half the world population)

#2. In 37% of Americans, the thirst mechanism is so weak
that it is mistaken for hunger.

#3. Even MILD dehydration will slow down one's metabolism as 3%.

#4. One glass of water will shut down midnight hunger pangs
for almost 100% of the dieters studied in a University of
Washington study.

#5. Lack of water, the #1 trigger of daytime fatigue.

#6. Preliminary research indicates that 8-10 glasses of
water a day could significantly ease back and joint pain
for up to 80% of sufferers.

#7. A mere 2% drop in body water can trigger fuzzy short-term
memory, trouble with basic math, and difficulty focusing on
the computer screen or on a printed page.

#8. Drinking 5 glasses of water daily decreases the risk of
colon cancer by 45%, plus it can slash the risk of breast
cancer by 79%., and one is 50% less likely to develop
bladder cancer. Are you drinking the amount of water
you should drink every day?

COKE

#1. In many states the highway patrol carries
two gallons of Coke in the trunk to remove blood from
the highway after a car accident.

#2. You can put a T-bone steak in a bowl of Coke
and it will be gone in two days.

#3. To clean a toilet: Pour a can of Coca-Cola into the
toilet bowl and let the 'real thing' sit for one hour,
then flush clean. The citric acid in Coke removes stains from vitreous
china.

#4. To remove rust spots from chrome car bumpers: Rub the bumper with a
rumpled-up piece of Reynolds Wrap aluminum foil dipped in Coca-Cola.

#5. To clean corrosion from car battery terminals: Pour
a can of Coca-Cola over the terminals to bubble away the corrosion.

#6. To loosen a rusted bolt: Apply a cloth soaked in Coca-Cola to the
rusted bolt for several minutes.

#7. To bake a moist ham: Empty a can of Coca-Cola into the baking pan,
wrap the ham in aluminum foil, and bake. Thirty minutes before ham is
finished, remove the foil, allowing the drippings to mix with the Coke for a
sumptuous brown gravy.

#8... To remove grease from clothes: Empty a can of Coke
into the load of greasy clothes, add detergent, and run through a regular
cycle. The Coca-Cola will help loosen grease stains. It will also clean road
haze from your
windshield.

FOR YOUR INFORMATION:

#1 the active ingredient in Coke is phosphoric acid. It will dissolve a
nail in about four days. Phosphoric acid also leaches calcium from bones and
is a major
contributor to the rising increase of osteoporosis.

#2. To carry Coca-Cola syrup! (the concentrate) the commercial trucks
must use a hazardous Material place cards reserved for highly corrosive
materials.

#3. The distributors of Coke have been using it to clean
engines of the trucks for about 20 years!

Now the question is, would you like a glass of water?

or Coke?

Place Pages Raise SEO, Reputation and Click Concerns

Greetings!  I'm Mark Micheau, manager of research and translation services at www.sterlingcreations.ca.
Today, I have a very insightful article to share with you; one that takes the reader into the world of search engine placement.  I invite you now to read on.
Have a great day.

Place Pages Raise SEO, Reputation and Click Concerns

Google has people riled up with its latest local search effort Google Place Pages. Place Pages are a Google Maps feature launched last week, which serve the purpose of providing everything you want to know about a place (a city or a business) in one spot. For example, if you search for a specific restaurant, you should get web pages, directions, reviews, images, street view imagery, business hours, etc. Google lets businesses submit specific categories they want to include.

There is concern from some that Google is trying to eliminate the need for users to leave Google and even visit a small business' web site. WebProNews reader Doug Stewart, who wonders if this is an "assault against the small business website," commented, "Google wants people to spend more time on Google. Yahoo wants people to spend more time on Yahoo. Facebook wants people to spend more time on Facebook. Several of these large online "media" [companies] are doing everything in their power to keep the eyeballs on their website (unless you pay them for an outbound link)."

Do you think Google's Place Pages are good or bad for business? Tell us what you think.

Google has always claimed to do everything with the user's experience in mind. Unfortunately for SEOs and webmasters, however, it also could mean that people have less reason to go to their sites.

To me, this would really depend on the information that the searcher is hoping to acquire. It's going to be about finding the right balance of useful information and providing an incentive to still go to your site (if that is your goal). The Place Pages would certainly bring a new element to the online reputation management table. You're going to want to keep an eye on what's showing up on your Place Page, and address the situation accordingly. They can include user-generated content.

Another concern that has been voiced about Place Pages, is that Google could start ranking them in natural search results - outside of Google Maps. In fact, Erick Schonfeld points out that this is already occurring for at least the Burdick Chocolate Cafe (the example Google used when it announced the feature).

This could theoretically reduce clicks to actual sites, but again, this would just emphasize the need to manage your reputation on your Place Page. Your site is likely to be easily located from the Place Page anyway.

Blogger Eric Fredline says Google's Place Pages are "designed for optimization," but that something is missing. "For one, Google would need local merchant's to define some sort of 'conversion event'. This is conceptually as easy as defining a new 'block type' that will appear on the landing page and be optimized," he says. "For example, a restaurant might view a phone call or an Open Table registration as a conversion event. If it's a phone call, I imagine the merchant could be encouraged to use Google Voice to provide a closed loop analysis of the conversion event."

"Perhaps more likely than having individual merchants doing this (at least in all cases) would be a small army of SEO and SEM experts doing it on the businesses' behalf – but within a closed looped system managed by Google," he adds. "Google could potentially create a whole new eco-system."

Another interesting factor of Google's Place Pages is the fact that they have sponsored results on them. This could raise more concerns, such as competing ads showing up on a business' place page. In Google's chocolate Cafe example, the Page is showing ads for chocolate companies like Godiva and Ghirardelli.

There are a lot of questions about the Pages, and answers will likely come in due time. In fact, Google Place Pages will be discussed in more than one panel at next week's Search Marketing Expo, which WebProNews will be attending. We should have more information on it then.

The Place Pages come with their own structured URL. The example Google gives is http://maps.google.com/places/us/cambridge/brattle-st/52/-burdick-chocolate-cafe. You can see how it is structured by places/country/city/street/address/business name. Google discusses the feature here.

Google says that while not all businesses have a place page yet, they will soon. Businesses can update their info through Google's Local Business Center.

What is your take on the role of Google's Place Pages? Share your thoughts.

Celebrity linguists - setting the example | Web Translations

Top of the day to you out there!  I'm Donna J. Jodhan and today I would like to zoom in on how celebrities are doing when it comes to foreign languages.

Celebrity linguists - setting the example | Web Translations

Many of us often miss out on using something very simple and basic and it is this; learning of a second language in order to become more marketable, more flexible, and better able to move ahead of our competition.  These days, celebrities are using their knowledge of second and even third languages to help them stand out among their fellow celebrities so why can't others use this strategy to their advantage?

It really is not too difficult to learn a second language.  All you need to do to get started is to say to yourself:  "A second language is nothing more than being able to communicate with others who do not speak my language" and after that it is easy sailing.  Think of it like this.  You speak English as your first language and you are just dying to meet new people from South America because you want to make new friends from another country.  However, in order to communicate with them you need to learn how to speak their language.  So, what do you do?  Easy and simple!  You learn to speak Spanish.    As global trade and commerce continue to expand, the need to speak and communicate in a second language is only going to become more acute and advantageous.  So why not start now?

I am going to leave you with an excellent reference to check out.  See what some of our celebrities are doing these days.  Please see below.

As any Careers Advisor can tell you, the ability to speak another language is not only useful, it might be essential for a particular career path, or just might be the string to a candidate's bow that makes them stand out from other ... Danish actor Viggo Mortensen was raised in Argentina, so speaks Spanish fluently, as well as French, English, and of course Danish. Maybe a bit of Elvish too, you would hope! Lucy Liu speaks Mandarin Chinese, Japanese, and Norwegian. ...

The most seasoned job hunters

Greetings!  I'm Scott Savoy, editor of writing services at www.sterlingcreations.ca and today I am delighted to share an editorial with you written by our president Donna J. Jodhan.
Today, Donna talks about some of the most seasoned job hunters and I invite you now to read on.
I wish you a great weekend.

The most seasoned job hunters
By Donna J. Jodhan

They are probably some of the most persistent door knockers that you as an employer will ever come across.  In good times and in bad times; they are there at your door with resume in hand.  They are pretty good at sniffing out opportunities and you can give them an A for effort.  However, when it comes to success at job hunting!  Well, here is where they get an F minus!  Shocker or shaker?  A shocker to those who are completely oblivious to what is going on around them when it comes to who is unemployed and why.  A shaker to many Canadians, but absolutely no shocker to disabled Canadians.

Does this statistic sound familiar to you?  For more than 20 years now, under employment or unemployment among disabled Canadians has stood at a whapping over 80% and over 70% of disabled Canadians continue to live below the poverty line.  Or how is this one for you; when it comes to employability blind and visually impaired Canadians are at the bottom of the barrel.  Yet for all of this, this very sad and depressing picture, disabled Canadians continue to toil away at their job hunting job.

We can take a tiny bit of solace in knowing that this problem is not just a Canadian problem or a made in Canada picture.  No!  It is a global problem.  In developed countries, developing countries, and under developed countries, unfortunately the picture is the same.  Believe it or not, Canada is a developed country and even belongs to the prestigious G8 group of countries but I sometimes have to shake my head in bewilderment when I think of the lack of action on the part of successive governments when it comes to improving of job opportunities for disabled Canadians.

I would be quite remiss if I did not say that some improvement has been made over the years when it comes to job opportunities for disabled Canadians but for two steps forward we seem to go one backwards.  Not nearly enough if we hope to turn things around and change the outlook for a better life for disabled Canadians.  Like the two step dance sort of; but back to our most seasoned job hunters.

In order for disabled Canadians to lose this unfavourable stigma, something drastic has to happen.  I am not sure where we could start but it is food for thought and maybe the readers of my editorial could take a few minutes to put on their thinking caps and kick their imaginations into high gear.  We need to start thinking about the welfare of tomorrow's generation of disabled Canadians along with today's generation of job hunters.  We need to focus our attention on how we as a group can bring about change.  How do we go about changing attitudes and breaking down those artificial and technological barriers.  It is all up to us now and it is time for us to  either shape up or ship out!

Computer designed to pick out hotties; Analyzing facial features could have

Greetings!  I'm Nico Trimoff, manager of transcription and accessibility services at www.sterlingcreations.ca.
Today, I have chosen a very interesting article to share with you.  One that may appeal to those who consider themselves to be "Hotties."
I invite you now to read on.
Have a great day.

Computer designed to pick out hotties; Analyzing facial features could have
applications in health, marketing

Frances Willick
Edmonton Journal , July 19, 2009

The computer analyzes every pore, pimple and wrinkle. It notices your
slightly asymmetrical ears, the distance between your eyes and that
chickenpox scar on your forehead. Then, it rates your attractiveness on a
scale of one to 10.

Sound like a nightmare?

It's actually the handiwork of a Canadian student who has trained a computer
system to recognize the characteristics of human attractiveness and rate
people's appearance using photographs.

Josh Chauvin, a philosophy and psychology student at the University of
Windsor in Ontario, said his study shows it may be possible to create a
computer or "artificial neural network" capable of producing human-like
evaluations.

"At first, I just started the project out of interest," he said. "It wasn't
until later that I saw there could be other implications."

Thirty-three University of Windsor students volunteered for the potentially
self-esteem-crushing, scientific version of Am I Hot or Not? during a
research project conducted by the third-year undergraduate student.

Photos were first rated by humans, and those ratings were fed to the
computer. Then, the system was asked to rate the attractiveness of 33 new
images. Chauvin said the computer's ratings fell within one point of the
human participants' ratings 86 per cent of the time.

Chauvin said the research, conducted under the direction of Marcello Guarini
from University of Windsor's philosophy department and Chris Abeare from the
department of psychology, goes beyond narcissistic curiosity.

The computer system could be used to diagnose congenital illnesses that are
known to correlate with certain facial features. For example, while Down
syndrome is normally easily identifiable by facial features, other illnesses
are manifested more subtly. Chauvin said the pattern-recognition program
could help diagnose those illnesses using facial features.

The system could also be useful for marketers and advertisers to gauge the
popularity of a product without having to poll human subjects, Chauvin said.

The study found that both males and females rated females as more
attractive.

On a scale of one to 10, with one described as "very unattractive" and 10 as
"very attractive," mean attractiveness ratings by humans for each face
ranged from 2.27 to 7.83 with a mean of 4.97--what the study would deem
"somewhat unattractive."

Chauvin's research has earned him a spot on the roster at the International
Conference on Neural Computation in Portugal in October.

Chauvin said he is considering expanding the study to analyze personality
traits using facial features.

"There's an idea that personality gets written on our faces after time
--that it's possible to make personality judgments based on facial features.
We do that all the time. Before we meet someone, we gauge their personality
on zero acquaintance, without having met them."

Other studies have shown that personality characteristics are assessed
within a tenth of a second of meeting someone new.

Google Voice: The New Coolest Thing Ever

Greetings!  I'm Mark Micheau, manager of research and translation services at www.sterlingcreations.ca.
So often, we tend to come down on Google, but today I have an article to share with you about something very cool that Google is doing.
I invite you to read on.
Have a great day.

Google Voice: The New Coolest Thing Ever
Mike McDonald | Staff Writer

Check your tinfoil hats at the door

What would you say if a company asked you if you'd like to have
all of your home, work and cell phone calls, all your text messages,
all your conference calls, all your voicemail -- pretty much
anything you say or type into a phone -- ALL of it -- go thru
their 3rd party service? You, like me, would probably say; Thanks
but no thanks.

But wait. What if they were going to give you a bunch of really
cool features and capabilities in the process?  For free? Oh, and
what if the company were Google?  Now you might be saying; Oh yeah?
Well... what kind of cool features?  I would.

-------------------------------------------------------------------

Are you Interested in Google Voice?  Let us know in the comments:
http://www.webpronews.com/node/50848#comments

-------------------------------------------------------------------

Google Voice is the new 'Coolest Thing Ever' coming out of Google.
Basically, what they are doing is allowing you to centralize your
multiple phone numbers (work/home/cell etc).  In the process they
have come up with all kinds of handy tools and features that give
endusers more control over their telecom than they have ever had
before.

====================================================================

Essentially, here's how it goes down.  You get a new Google
assigned phone number.  Then, you route all of your other phone
numbers thru that number.  So, your office phone, your work phone,
your home phone - whatever. Google voice will allow your calls to
selectively ring thru to any of the destination handsets you
choose.  It really is a handy idea in concept.

Beyond that, Voice adds all kinds of cool little bonus features
for example:

- You can selectively ring calls thru to multiple destinations.
- You can selectively block and screen calls
- You can send, receive forward and store SMS text messages
- Check your voicemail online, read it via email or text
  (you can even forward it)
- You can create personalized voicemail messages per contact
- You can group your contacts and manage their preferences on
  a group level
- Conference calling, call recording, call switching, 411 info --
all that kind of thing is in there.?

====================================================================

Now, rephrase my original question and substitute Google for
'a company'. Do you still flatly refuse? I'm thinking a lot of
people will just say "Oh, it's Google" and after that, "Well
sure, that sounds fantastic! Wow. Man, Google is cool aren't
they?" So, my question is:  why is that?

Yes, Google Voice is cool.  Yes, I have signed up. Yes, I realize
using it means everything I use it for becomes more data for
Google to 'organize'.  But I might do it anyway and I won't be
alone.

The way I see it, Google Voice users will be made up of three
groups of people:

====================================================================

Group 1: Realize how much data the service gives Google access
to, but trusts Google enough that it isn't a concern.  These
folks also elected Obama and only eat tuna clearly labeled
dolphin safe.

Group 2: Realize the data issue but don't care, because they
realize their 'data' is all over the place anyway - Google might
as well have some (more) too. These are also the  people who
told their classmates about Santa in the 3rd grade.

====================================================================

Group 3: No idea or thought paid to the matter of their data and
who sees it. This the reality TV set.  As long as the Bachelorette
is still on Monday night... they're good to go.

Add those guys up and Google Voice will do just fine.  Even some
of the people that refuse to use over privacy issues will trickle
in after a while.  Peer pressure and the whole, 'man I wish my
phone did that' factor is not to be lightly discounted (just ask
Apple).

Google Voice does lots of neat stuff...  Sure you give up a
little in the way of data privacy, but hey... selective call
block?  How cool is that? I can go to the lake and have my
office line ring to my cell?  Well that certainly has it's
practical applications.  We are, most of us, used to trading a
little bad for a little good. So what's it going to be for you?
Are you Pro or Con on the Google Voice thing?  If you are, which
of my groups do you fit into, or are you a group unto your own?

More than 70 languages ? « Bblop's Weblog

Top of the day to you out there!  I'm Donna J. Jodhan and today I have an important question for you.
If you can name the top 10 spoken languages of the world then you've won but if you can't then you need to read on.

More than 70 languages … « Bblop's Weblog
By Donna J. Jodhan

If I were to ask you to name some of the top spoken languages today, would you be able to do so?  If I were to ask you how many spoken languages there are today, what would your response be?

In answer to my first question, here are some of the top spoken languages today.  English, Chinese, Spanish, Japanese, French, Portuguese, German, Arabic, Russian, ...
In answer to my second question, this may be a bit more difficult to pin down as the answer can vary anywhere from 500 to 5000.  Believe it or not, the world continues to revolve around spoken languages and the winner is the one who can converse efficiently in any of the top languages named above.  It never hurts to learn a second language but in order to remain proficient in a second language, one has to use it constantly.

One should also remember this important tip:  It is always better to translate from a second language to one's mother tongue when operating in the world of translation.  Here is another tip:  A company would always do well to keep in mind that their profile rises to the top if they take the time to specialize in a handful of languages rather than trying to be a jack of all trades to everyone.

I am going to leave you with a reference to check out.  See what Mozilla is doing these days.
Please see below.
More than 70 languages … « Bblop's Weblog
By bblop
According to Wikipedia, the exact number of known living languages will vary from 5000 to 10000, depending on the definition of "language". At the same time, the top 10 languages (English, Chinese, Spanish, Japanese, French, Portuguese, German, Arabic, Russian, ... Community members do all this translation work in their spare time. And only a handful of people are managing the enormous process behind all those versions at Mozilla. Even huge companies do not match that. ...

Is Social Security Broke? : Debt Law Network
By Carmen Dellutri, Attorney at Law
More people than ever will be applying for early retirement this year and next year because they have either lost their job and cannot find another one or they are going to lose their jobs and will need to replace that income in some manner . ... So, the problems begin when you see more early retirees and an aging population of baby boomers applying for benefits combined with an economic slump. Some 400000 additional people applied for Social Security Benefits since last ...

Chas' Compilation: Social Security Insecurity: an Orchestrated Crisis

Social Security officials had expected applications to increase from the growing number of baby boomers reaching retirement, but they didn't expect the increase to be so large. ... Where we live, there are plenty of jobs that nobody wants to do. At our local supermarkets, the "bag boy" is often a senior citizen old enough to be my mother or father. I've noticed a lot of jobs that used to be done by teenagers when I was a teenager, are now being done by seniors. ...

C-17, Post Office win Senate scramble - David Rogers - POLITICO.com
By David Rogers
Because there are real jobs and real people behind these decisions. If the aircraft isn't needed (don't we need more large helecopters in Afghanistan?), then the project should be cut. Pay them to make solar panels or wind generators ... How can we teach Baby Boomers that you can't spend what you don't have? The "Give me now generation" is in charge. We have no way of retraining this generation which is too young to remember the great depression and has no reality check ...

Let's sing together

Greetings!  I'm Christian Robicheau, assistant editor of writing services at www.sterlingcreations.ca.
Today, I am delighted to present you with an editorial by our president Donna J. Jodhan and in her editorial for this week, Donna puts out a call for the blind community to come together.
I wish you a great weekend.

Let's sing together

I am not sure how else to phrase this but here goes.  I think that the time for us has come to sing together and what am I getting at today?  It is time for us to stop beating up on each other.  Time for us to stop the blame game; and time for us to come together and pool our resources to sing together.  In short, it is time for us as a community to put our differences aside and start working together for our own good.  We need to start building bridges.  Time for us to heal the wounds, and who else better to do all of this then we ourselves.

It is much easier to criticize rather than commit and even easier to complain rather than carry out.  None of this should come as a shocker or shaker and I am very sure that some of you will probably find it easier to train your guns on me rather than take all of your energy and put it into more productive use.  You should not be surprised to hear me say that there is an abundance of talent floating around within our community and among us.  There is so much unharnessed energy just waiting to be scooped up and put to work.

There is a mass of untapped talent among us that needs to be taken advantage of and we need to find ways to harness all of this and move forward.  The past is the past and unfortunately we cannot go back and correct it but what we can do is to move forward and work for a better future.  It is time for us to build bridges instead of throwing bombs and spitballs at each other for the latter has not gotten us anywhere.  We need to come together and start unifying our efforts for the good of our community.

We will not have a hope in the world if we continue to rip each other apart; distrust each other, call each other nasty names, and accuse each other.  We will never be able to get past where we are if we continue to complain instead of suggesting.  We will never be able to reclaim our rightful inheritance if we continue to spend our energy on negative thoughts and words instead of putting it into positive action.  History unfortunately can not be corrected but the future can be changed; only if we stop for one moment and think of not just ourselves, but others.

Let us put our differences aside for the sakes of both ourselves and for tomorrow's generation.  Let us use our energies and talents to create and develop bridges and structures that will stand tall.  Let us make both ourselves and each other proud to say that yes!  Despite our differences we can still work together.  So, how about it?

I'm Donna J. Jodhan wishing you a terrific day and weekend.

Your best American cities

Hello there!  I'm Donna J. Jodhan and it's time for our weekly travel feature!  Just a few minutes to have some fun and pretend and why not?
November is here and holidays are fast approaching.  So, come now with me ane let's travel around our beloved country.
Enjoy and have a great day!

Week of November 07 2009:

Your best American cities

1. Shreveport Louisiana
This is a city that is extremely rich in culture and history.
For the person who frequents casinos, Shreveport has 5 riverboat casinos for you to choose from.
For the one who loves to bet on the horses, Shreveport has some of the best thorough bred racing in the world.
For the one who wants to be close to cities like New Orleans, Baton Rouge, Dallas, and Houston, Shreveport is the one for you.
If you are seeking a city with rich culture, deep history, great culinary tastes, plus more; you should check out Shreveport Louisiana.

2. Akron Ohio
This is a city with one of the most vibrant economies in America today.
It is the hub of business and industry and is home to several and well known companies including tire manufacturers and toy companies.
Akron has a magnitude of attractions to offer history buffs, museum lovers, and there are lots of very affordable homes to choose from.
The cost of living is way below the national average and cost of living for this metropolitan city is much lower than many other metropolitan cities.
Akron is just a stone's throw away from Cleveland and if you are seeking a city of action, attractions, and affordability, then Akron is for you.

3. Spokane Washington
There are not many cities that have the ability to provide both vacationers and home owners with entertainment that is rich, exciting, and refreshing.
One such city is Spokane Washington; sunny for more than 260 days of the year.
Spokane!  Home to adventure and excitement! White water adventures, roller coaster excitement, peaceful walks through cedar forests, and funtime on pristine golf courses.
A perfect city for the nature lover.
If you are seeking a city with clean night time entertainment such as casinos and fine dining, and a city with oodles of wineries and breweries to visit and sample, then Spokane is for you.

4. Raleigh North Carolina
If you're seeking a city where you can continue your career in research, then look no further than Raleigh North Carolina.
Ideally located close to Durham and Cary, Raleigh offers very affordable housing, fine dining, and great entertainment.
Neighborhoods range from the modern urban subdivision to the historic.
Education facilities are great and Raleigh forms part of the famous research triangle in the region.
If you are looking to relocate to a city with a very affordable cost of living and great opportunities for career advancement, then Raleigh is for you.

I'm Donna J. Jodhan bidding you a happy travel time.

Software takes teen Pulse in secret; Marketers' program eavesdrops on web

Greetings!  I'm Nico Trimoff, manager of transcription and accessibility services at www.sterlingcreations.ca.
Today, I have a very concerning article to share with you; one that teens and their parents should be taking note of.
I invite you to read on and I wish you a great day.

Software takes teen Pulse in secret; Marketers' program eavesdrops on web

It's a marketer's dream and a teen's worst nightmare.

Shannon Proudfoot
Edmonton Journal, July 6, 2009

Pulse is a new software engine that crawls through blogs, forums and instant
messages to eavesdrop on teen conversations online, providing marketers,
movie studios and even politicians with detailed, instant insight into the
buzz about their products and competitors.

"Because we're tracking it in real-time, we pick up on the conversational
trend-lines and edginess with what the kids are talking about," said Jeffrey
Greene, CEO of parent company Echometrix.

The company, based on Long Island in New York state, started FamilySafe, an
Internet security program that monitored and analyzed everything a child did
online and sent his or her parents a text message alert about anything
alarming, Greene said.

Pulse launched June 29, and while other companies do similar social media
monitoring, it claims to be the first real-time web tool focused on a teen
audience.
Pulse listens in on 180 teen blogs and forums, Greene said, as well as the
instant-message conversations of about 150,000 teens -- including some
Canadians--whose
parents have installed the company's FamilySafe software.

"We never know who's talking," he said. "We don't even know their e-mail
addresses, so everybody is anonymous, except that we know from those who
care to tell us whether they're male or female and what their ages are."

Services like Pulse are in huge demand because they provide nearly instant
feedback in a swiftly changing media environment, Greene said, and
fly-on-the-wall
results are much more accurate than traditional market research.

"Teens are so clever that people who attempt to do research in the teen
marketplace often tell us that teens 'game the system,' " he said. "When
teens participate in an online poll or a focus group, they know or think
they know what answer we want to hear, so that's the answer they provide."

The company said Pulse predicted Kris Allen's surprise American Idol victory
before the results were announced in May. Teens talk about iPods 13 times
more than the Zune MP3 player, the program reveals, and the iPhone gets four
times more buzz than the BlackBerry.

Sarah Thuswaldner, a 17-year-old student in Ottawa, said she can see why
marketers would think it is a good idea, but it could easily backfire.

Some young people expose too much online, she said, but anyone would avoid a
website they knew was being monitored by software like this.

"No one wants to be spied on, and no one is going to trust a company that
they think is spying on them."

What's more, Thuswaldner said, marketing executives would be making a big
mistake to take online chatter too seriously. The Internet is a place of
"throwaway opinions" and fringe points of view, she said, and anyone who
read too much into the catchphrases, inside jokes and niche interests that
live there would end up with bizarre results.
