Home businesses can be a blessing

Greetings!  I'm Christian Robicheau, assistant editor at www.sterlingcreations.ca.  Today, as October comes to an end and as November prepares to take over, I hope that everyone is getting ready to welcome the holiday season.
Today, I have a very insightful editorial to share with you from our president Donna J. Jodhan.
I wish you a great weekend.

+++++++++++++++
Home businesses can be a blessing

Many people scoff at the idea of creating and developing a home business.  Up till a few years ago, society did not think much of the home business venture.  They felt that it would probably fail before it even got off the ground and there were other comments like:
A home business does not really mean that you are working at a real job.
A home business would mean that you spend too much time at home and not enough time communicating with others.
A home business is not as meaningful as working for a real company.

This way of thinking has been changing quite drastically for at least the past decade and now more than ever, more and more persons are going into their own home businesses.  There are a few driving forces behind this drastic change and I'd like to look at these.

First, the stress factor.  In a recent survey published in the United States, it was revealed that over 85% of respondents attributed their stress to many of the following factors:
Having to deal with traffic jams.  Many of those surveyed complained that they were often stressed out because of having to spend so much time in traffic snarls.
Having to spend too much time at the office and not enough time at home.
Having to deal with supervisors who did not appreciate the time and effort that they were putting in at the office.
Not much hope for career advancement.
Having to deal with cramped office space and other co-workers.

Second, the advent of the Internet.  The Internet has literally opened up millions of opportunities for persons to be abele to work from home. Anyone choosing to start their own home business can now use the Internet to do such things as:
Market and advertise their products and services.
Buy and sell their products and services.
Send and receive information.
Send and receive tasks to be carried out.
The Internet has made it possible for home businesses to be flexible when it comes to work schedules and in addition, it is so much easier for persons to keep in touch with their clients more easily and efficiently.

In the opinion of many experts, it is becoming easier to open a home business.  The benefits to doing so are looking more and more enticing to those contemplating it.  The idea of being able to spend more time at home with the family, avoiding those long hours in traffic snarls or just traveling to and from the office, the thought of becoming one's own boss, and the ability to make one's own schedule and work at one's own pace, all of these advantages are making the home business venture more exciting, interesting, and above all, more beneficial.

I'm Donna J. Jodhan wishing you a terrific day and weekend.

The key to group intelligence may have less to do with brains more to do

Greetings!  I'm Nico Trimoff, manager of transcription and accessibility services at www.sterlingcreations.ca.
Ever had any thoughts about group intelligence?  Well, hang on to your hats!  We have a reader's contribution from Aden Mashkoff and we thank Aden for sending this one in to us.
Have a great day!

A reader's contribution

The key to group intelligence may have less to do with brains more to do
with women's social skills

Ingrid Peritz; Adrian Morrow
Globe and Mail, Oct. 1, 2010

MONTREAL and TORONTO - It is a lesson for everyone from corporate Canada to
community halls: The key to "smart" groups may have less to do with brains
and more to do with social sensitivity - a trait typically found in women.

Researchers in the U.S. have found that putting individual geniuses together
into a team doesn't add up to one intelligent whole. Instead, they found,
group intelligence is linked to social skills, taking turns, and the
proportion of women in the group.

"The individual intelligence of members is not a very strong predictor of
collective intelligence," said lead researcher Anita Woolley, of Carnegie
Mellon University in Pennsylvania.

Researchers divided 700 people into groups of two to five, and set out to
measure their ability to perform tasks such as brainstorming, solving
puzzles and making moral judgments. The goal was to assess collective
intelligence, dubbed the "c factor."

They found that groups that worked well were ones where members interacted
and participated equally. They tended to include more women.

"We didn't expect that the proportion of women would be a significant
influence, but we found that it was," Prof. Woolley, an organizational
psychologist, said in an interview. "The effect was linear, meaning the more
women, the better."

Their social skills might mean picking up non-verbal cues on their faces and
deducing what others are feeling, then drawing them out, Prof. Woolley said.

Men can have so-called social sensitivity too, Prof. Woolley said. But if
you're a decision-maker and don't know anything about people before putting
a team together, "then a better bet is to incorporate more women."

The findings could be relevant to everything from scientific collaboration
to corporate offices and the high-stakes field of military planning.

"Could a short collective intelligence test predict a sales team's or a top
management team's long-term effectiveness?" the study asks.

Researchers found that groups where a few people dominated the conversation
were less "collectively intelligent" than those where everyone shared
equally. The silent type in the corner may be the smartest person in the
room. And the loudmouth who dominates the conversation may not be helping at
all.

The study's findings rang true for Canadians accustomed to working in
groups.

At Vancouver advertising agency Wasserman and Partners, about two-thirds of
the employees are women, and it's no accident. Women are more successful as
account coordinators - jobs that involve keeping clients happy and getting
work from the firm's creative types on time - and consequently get promoted
to higher levels in the organization, said company president Alvin
Wasserman.

"You need really solid communication skills and you need really good people
skills and we've found women are better there than men," Mr. Wasserman said.
On the creative side, he said, women and men perform equally well.

Social sensitivity helps Toronto indie band Ohbijou navigate the stresses of
recording and touring together. Being able to read when a band mate is ready
to quit for the night or when a songwriting session is going nowhere helps
keep harmony in the group, says lead singer Casey Mecija.

"From where to stop and where to eat and where to stay and what time to meet
up for sound check, it takes negotiation."

The group, comprised of four women and two men, also recently revamped its
songwriting process to incorporate all band members' input. One member will
come with a melody or chords, another will add a bridge and the others will
layer on different elements until the band has a complete song.

"We've been able to decipher peoples' personalities - when we need to back
off or when we need to push someone to get their best," said Ms. Mecija, who
recently returned from a stint with her band writing at a cottage in rural
Ontario.

The study is published in the Sept. 30 issue of the journal Science.

Will People Pay for App-Based News Publications?

Greetings!  I'm Mark Micheau, manager of research and translation services at www.sterlingcreations.ca.
I hope that everyone is doing well and today, I have an article that asks a very important question.  All about whether or not people are willing to pay for app-based news publications.
I hope you find this article interesting reading.
Have a great day.

Will People Pay for App-Based News Publications?
Chris Crum | Staff Writer

Are App-Only Publications the Answer? News Corp. Aims to Find Out

A couple weeks ago, reports surfaced that News Corp. was working on a new app-only publication. Even before much was known about the project, some heralded it as a "game changer". I find that notion to be a bit premature.

As time progressed, we heard more about how excited Rupert Murdoch had become about tablets. The Guardian ran a piece quoting him as calling them "the perfect platform" for cheap and convenient, up-to-date News Corp. content.
While it is still in the early stages, a little more information is coming out about News Corp.'s project. The LA Times says the publication would have its own dedicated reporting and editing staff, but may still draw from other News Corp. content. This would of course be paid content.

Dawn C. Chmielewski reports: "If green-lit, News Corp. could invest anywhere from $30 to $40 million in the venture, according to a person with knowledge of the situation. New York Post executive editor Jesse Angelo would oversee the separate digital news operation, in addition to his responsibilities at the tabloid."

How Long can You go without Facebook, Twitter, and Instant Messaging?

Chmielewski goes on to say that this would directly compete with the New York Times, USA Today, and other national publications. I see more than one glaring issue with this. Most people do not own tablets. Yes, iPad sales have been impressive, and the device is starting to get some competition. There's no doubt in my mind that tablet use will continue to gain popularity, but the fact remains, it will be a while before these devices are in everyone's hands or even reach cell phone or PC status. Granted, the app would be available for phones as well, but clearly the tablet factor is what is generating the hype - the bigger, more magazine-like feel that can be achieved.

Another flaw? How about the fact that the web is still available on tablet devices and mobile phones. While tablet owners may prefer reading on their tablets, there is still plenty of free content that could keep the majority of readers from paying.
That's not to say this project will be a complete failure, and it is clearly experimental, but it still stands to reason that app-only content will face many of the same obstacles as print content, in addition to the limited use of tablets, and limited size of phones.

A pre-iPad study (conducted by Forrester in November) found that 80% of consumers wouldn't access news sites if they had to pay. Will this really change with apps?

Another more recent study from the USC Annenberg School for Communication & Journalism also found that consumers aren't too willing to pay for content (including Twitter, though Roger Ebert's Twitter followers felt differently).

Small Business Idea ? How to Start a Translation Service Business ...

Small Business Idea – How to Start a Translation Service Business ...
By Donna J. Jodhan

If you are seeking a bit of a small business idea to start a translation service, then I'd like to help you get started.  Here are some real facts for you to build upon.
First, Spanish is the second most spoken language in the United States with over 12% of Americans saying that Spanish is their first language.
Second, there are over 200 languages being spoken in America today.
Third, some of the other more popular languages being spoken in America include French, German, and Chinese.

If you decide to follow your dream to set up a small business translation service, then you would do good to concentrate on just a handful of languages.  Do not try to be everything to everyone so to speak.  In addition, you need to employ translators who can translate from a second language to their mother tongue and not the other way around.  Example:  If their second language is French and their mother tongue is English, then it is best to have them translate from French to English and not the other way around.

I have a great reference for you to check out and invite you now to see below.

Work smarter and not harder

Hello there!  I'm Scott Savoy, editor at www.sterlingcreations.ca.
I hope that everyone is enjoying their October weekend and today I am delighted to introduce an editorial by our president Donna J. Jodhan.
I wish you a great weekend

+++++++++++++++

Work smarter and not harder

I think that I may have just figured out something very important in my life.  I need to start working smarter, not harder.  Up till now I used to think that the harder I worked, the better it would be for me.  I used to burn the candle at both ends by working more than 50 hours a week.  I used to really throw myself into my job and double my efforts to please my clients and even beat their deadlines.  I used to multi task all the time because I honestly felt that it was the only way for me to succeed but guess what!  Whereas I was doing well enough in my business, my personal life along with my health was suffering.

Then last year I lost my elder brother to cancer.  Before he passed on he told us he believed that his illness had been caused by too much stress on the job.  As an airline captain he had to spend the majority of his married life away from home and he definitely worked harder and not smarter.  I am still struggling to come to terms with his loss and every day I remember his words.  Working harder does not necessarily mean working smarter.  I am in no way saying that stress is a forerunner to cancer but many health experts are strongly suggesting that there may be a link between the two.

As a blind professional woman, I have to work that bit harder in order to keep up with my competitors because like it or not it takes me longer to do things.  The same thing applies to my household chores and these are just facts of life that I have to accept.  What I realized a few months ago is that if I don't change my lifestyle soon it will definitely change me soon.  So, with this in mind, I have made a few changes to the way I do things.  I am still working hard but now I am working smart.  How am I doing this?  Well, here's what I have started to do.

I give myself a mental health holiday every week and on the designated day I do what I enjoy doing outside of work.  Things like ice skating, playing chess, fooling around on my electronic keyboard, reading, relaxing, socializing, and cooking.  I have made it a habit not to think about work on my day off and I leave the office to my team.  I enjoy what the outdoors has to offer me and in short I take precious time to smell the roses and appreciate my loved ones.  Working smarter means that I now prioritize my tasks.  I do what I enjoy doing and not what I feel obligated to do.  I work best at tasks I love the most and I work worst at tasks that I feel pressured to do.  So I now work at what I love and enjoy.

I take brief mental breaks between projects.  Each day I allocate five to 10 minutes to dream and this helps me to replenish my creative juices.  I take time to eat properly and there is also time to make at least 1 social phone call per day.  Whenever I feel mentally tired I leave my desk and go for a brief walk.  Finally, I ensure that the projects I undertake are ones that will bring me personal satisfaction.  Life is too short to not enjoy what you are doing.

Try working smarter and not harder.  It's working for me and I'm feeling really good about myself, my life and my job.

I'm Donna J. Jodhan wishing you a terrific day and weekend.

Efforts to battle chronic pain found lacking

Greetings!  I'm Nico Trimoff, manager of accessibility and transcription services at www.sterlingcreations.ca.
Today, I have an article to share with you tthat was sent in by Bruce Morrell.  A very interesting article indeed and I thank Bruce for sending it along.  Hopefully, it will raise awareness of how we are dealing with chronic pain at the present time.
I wish you a great day.

Efforts to battle chronic pain found lacking

Chronic pain is a disease in itself and proper treatment a human right, doctor says

Adrian Morrow
Globe and Mail, Sep. 3, 2010

Some 80 per cent of people around the world who suffer from chronic pain can't get
the treatment they need and governments must step up their efforts to tackle the issue, says Michael Cousins, an Australian anesthetist and the driving force
behind the first International Pain Summit.

Fixing the problem would entail changing the curriculum in medical schools, co-ordinating between physicians to better treat chronic conditions and getting the word out to pain sufferers that there are alternatives to drugs, Dr. Cousins said.

Earlier this year, he had a hand in drafting a national pain management strategy for Australia – the first in the world – and the summit, which takes place in
Montreal on Friday, will draw up guidelines to help other countries follow suit. As health
professionals, academics and researchers gathered for the summit, Dr. Cousins told The Globe and Mail that chronic pain must be considered a disease in itself,
that there is an enormous economic cost to not dealing with the problem, and that proper
treatment is a human right.

Q: You say the vast majority of people who suffer from chronic pain can't get the treatment
they need. Can you give us a sense of what's causing the problem?

A: If you wanted to characterize this era of health care
, it's the fiscal era. It's one where the most important considerations are financial.
There aren't any resources – it's as simple as that. A lot of my research over the
last five years has been to measure the scale of the problem [of pain]. In my country,
one in five people suffer from chronic pain. It costs $34-billion per annum. That's
in health-care costs, lost work days and the entire economic burden of the disease.

Q: Often people think of pain simply as a symptom of illness, but you characterize chronic
pain as a disease in its own right. Can you explain?
A: There are changes in the spine, pathophysiological changes [associated with pain].
There are extreme neuroplasticity changes in the brain for people with chronic pain.
Catherine Bushnell at McGill has done extensive neuroimaging work showing a loss of brain tissue associated with chronic pain. It's my contention that sufferers are being discriminated against because they're being denied access to treatment for their chronic disease.

Q: What do governments around the world need to do to address the problem?
A:        First, you need epidemiological research: You want to know what the magnitude of
the problem is in your country. The second is pain education. It's got to start at
the undergraduate level. All primary care doctors need to have more training in pain
medicine. All countries also need to have physicians who specialize in pain. We're
also recommending that the population be educated. The general public needs to know
that they have access to all forms of treatment.

Q: Is a lack of access to medication also part of the problem?
A: With the new knowledge of the mechanisms of pain, there are now drugs being developed
that target the causes of the problem. Most patients have the idea that taking a pill is the only option and that's completely untrue. [There are] things like
cognitive behavioural therapy, physiotherapy.

Q: How do you make sure the recommendations on pain management that come out of the
summit are adopted?
A: There are two approaches available. One is to go to governments and get them to work
on that. In Montreal, there will be a high official from the U.K., a senior Canadian
health official, the deputy health minister of Malaysia and a high-ranking official
from Portugal will all be there. The second is to try to empower the general community,
tell them that they have the right to effective pain medicine. I've spoken with human-rights
organizations and human-rights lawyers, too.

Blue Screen Of Death Survival Guide: Every Error Explained

The link to a page with this article and more is at the end of today's tip.

Picture this: It's late at night, you're sitting at your computer playing a game or working on a project when, suddenly, Windows freezes completely. All your work is gone, and you find a blue screen full of gibberish staring back at you. Windows is dead, Jim, at least until you reboot it. You have no choice but to sigh loudly, shake your fist at Bill Gates and angrily push the reset button. You've just been visited by the ghost of windows crashed: the Blue Screen of Death.

Also known as the BSoD, the Blue Screen of Death appears when Windows crashes or locks up. It's actually a Windows "stop" screen, and is designed to do two things:

tell you the reason for the error, and to calm your nerves, hence the use of the color blue (studies show it has a relaxing effect on people). Though Blue Screens are difficult to decipher, all the information you need to figure out what caused it is right there in front of you in blue and white—and that's where we come in.

We're going to show you how to dissect the blue screen error details, so you can fix the problem that's causing them.

BSoD 101: A Crash Course.

Error Name

There are many parts to a BSOD, but the most important is right at the top. The actual name of the error is presented in all caps with an underscore between each word.

In some cases this will be all that's needed to get to the root of the problem (thanks to the handy guide you are about to read). Most of the time, however, more information will be required.

Troubleshooting Advice

Nearly every BSOD includes a portion of text with some basic troubleshooting advice, the first of which recommends restarting your computer. Gee, thanks for the tip Microsoft.

Before you restart, copy the exact all-caps error code and hexadecimal values shown above and below this portion of generic text. The next paragraph provides sound advice, alerting the user to check to make sure their hardware is installed properly, or to undo any recent software or hardware upgrades.

Memory Dump

Every BSOD is accompanied by a memory dump. What this means is when Windows crashes, it dumps whatever it is holding in system memory to a file, and saves the file on your hard drive for debugging purposes. If you contact Microsoft for technical assistance, they'll want to know the contents of this file.

Stop Code

The "technical information" section portion contains the actual Windows stop code, in oh-so-easy-to-read hexadecimal form. Despite appearing unintelligible at first glance, this combination of numbers and letters is instrumental in determining the cause of the crash. Pay particular attention to the first set of numbers and letters.

It precedes the other four, which are enclosed in parenthesis. If a specific driver is associated with the crash, it will be listed on the very next line.

I Run Vista, so I'm Immune to BSODs, Right?

Unfortunately, no. A common misconception is that blue screens don't even exist in Vista, but not only are they still there, but we're here to tell you we've seen them first hand. The good news is Microsoft put a lot of work into how Vista handles critical errors and other glitches that in previous OSes would cause a system crash. Most of the time, if a problem occurs, Vista will attempt to fix the problem without any interruption. For example, if your videocard crashes, you may see a message saying "Display driver stopped responding and has recovered." In XP and previous OSes, this almost always would have resulted in a system crash.

In some cases, Vista will be unable to recover on its own, and the result is a blue screen. By default, Vista will reboot itself after briefly flashing the blue screen.

It happens so fast you might miss it, but once Windows reloads, you'll be greeted with an error message similar to the above. You can try clicking the Check for solution button, just as you can try your hand playing the lotto. Neither one is likely to result in anything.

Instead, scroll down and take note of the blue screen codes. Armed with this information, you can perform your own detective work. Alternately, if you'd prefer to see the actual blue screen rather than automatically rebooting, right-click the My Computer icon on your desktop, select Properties, and click on Advanced System Settings. In the System Properties window that appears, select the Advanced tab, click Settings under Startup and Recovery, and uncheck the box that says Automatically Restart.

The same steps also apply to XP.

In another nod towards streamlining the troubleshooting process, Vista's Problem Reports and Solutions wizard can save you oodles of time in PC detective work, and may even alert you to potential conflicts you weren't even aware existed. You can find this applet by name in your Control Panel, or just type Problem Reports and Solutions in Vista's search box. Once loaded, click 'Check for new solutions' in the left-hand column. If Vista finds any conflicts, it will list them in the main window, along with any potential resolutions.

Using Chinese Business Cards Translation | Articles
By Donna J. Jodhan

There is a growing trend among Chinese businessmen and that is the use of the business card.  On one side you will find the information in Chinese and on the other side you will find the same in English.  In many instances the English may or may not be accurate but what is happening is this:  The Chinese business community is showing respect for both languages and the Chinese pride themselves on respect.

If you are planning to play on the global stage of international trade, then it is really not a bad idea to think of having bilingual business cards; in fact, it is a very good idea.  Maybe we should be taking a page out of the books of our Chinese counterparts.  Please see my reference below.

Problems at checkouts

Hello there!  I'm Christian Robicheau, assistant editor at www.sterlingcreations.ca.
Today, it's another gorgeous October weekend shaping up and I hope that everyone is getting ready to celebrate another great weekend.
I am pleased to present you with an editorial by our president Donna J. Jodhan and I hope you find it interesting.
Here's wishing you a great weekend.

+++++++++++++++
Problems at check outs
By Donna J. Jodhan

It appears that there is an unstoppable trend towards stores using check out systems that are of the touch screen variety.  All well and good for those who can use it but for someone with a sight problem; the blind and sight impaired, this is a problem.  It is a problem because as of now, blind and sight impaired persons are unable to master the touch screen technology.  If they are unable to use a touch screen, then they are exposed to issues of privacy and confidentiality.

If they go into a store that uses touch screen technology as their point of sale method, then blind and sighted persons would need to depend on sighted assistance to help them input their banking details.  In many cases, store personnel are very willing to help and can be trusted but this is not really the point.  Touch screen technology is a hindrance to the confidentiality and privacy of information for blind and sight impaired persons and it is probably time for the blind and sight impaired community to make their concerns known to the appropriate quarters.

Touch screen technology at check outs is not only affecting those with sight problems, it is also affecting those who are afflicted with dexterity problems.  Persons with certain types of learning difficulties, and those who have difficulty reading screens with small print.  In short, more than just a few.  This problem is only going to become more acute with time because of a rapidly aging population and this may be the time for manufacturers to start taking note.  Or, start taking action.

Beyond the blow to self-esteem, bullying can hurt the brain, too

Beyond the blow to self-esteem, bullying can hurt the brain, too
Study links harassment to cognitive deficits and mental-health problems

ANNE McILROY
Globe and Mail, Mar. 11, 2010

They lurk in hallways, bathrooms, around the next blind corner. But for the
children they have routinely teased or tormented, bullies effectively live
in the victims' brains as well - and not just as a terrifying memory.

Preliminary evidence shows that bullying can produce signs of stress,
cognitive deficits
and mental-health problems.

Now University of Ottawa psychologist Tracy Vaillancourt and her colleagues
at McMaster University in Hamilton plan to scan the brains of teens who have
been regularly
Humiliated and ostracized by their peers to look for structural differences
compared with other
children.

"We know there is a functional difference. We know their brains are acting
differently, but we don't know if it is structural as well," said Dr.
Vaillancourt, an expert in the biology of bullying.

She says she hopes her work will legitimize the plight of children who are
bullied,
and encourage parents, teachers and school boards to take the problem more
seriously.

Dr. Vaillancourt has been following a group of 17-year-olds since they were
12. All
70 of the children were routinely bullied during those years - teased,
harassed, threatened or excluded.

Physical violence is relatively rare, she says, because their tormentors are
smart
enough to know it will get them into trouble.

"For many of these kids, every day is a nightmare," she said. They go to
school and no one will talk to them. Someone deliberately bumps into them in
the hallway, and all the other children laugh. They get called horrible
names.

The researchers will start with brain scans of 15 of the extreme cases, like
the child who stood in her gym uniform while other kids put her school
clothes in the toilet and urinated on them.

There are also teenagers in the study who have been bullied for five
straight school
years.

The scientists have already shown that children who are bullied are more
likely than other kids to have cognitive deficits.

They score lower on tests that measure verbal memory and executive function,
a set of skills needed to focus on a task and get the job done.
Mental-health problems, such as depression, are also more common.

Dr. Vaillancourt suspects they will also have a smaller hippocampus, a part
of the brain involved in memory. Depression has been shown to be related to
a smaller hippocampus.

As well, animal studies have shown that chronic high levels of stress can
kill brain
cells. Dr. Vaillancourt says this kind of damage may help explain why
children who
are bullied often perform poorly academically.

She will also be looking for a smaller prefrontal cortex, which plays a role
in being
able to pay attention and other executive functions.

These kinds of differences have been documented in functional magnetic
resonance imaging studies of children who have been neglected or abused. Dr.
Vaillancourt suspects
the chronic stress of being bullied will have a similar impact.

She and her colleagues have already published research showing that boys who
are bullied tend to produce more of the stress hormone cortisol. It is as if
their system is in permanent overdrive.
It's the opposite for the girls; they tend to produce less cortisol than
average, as though their stress response system is overly subdued.

"At some point, their brains stop reacting," said Dr. Vaillancourt, who
holds a Canada Research Chair in children's mental health and violence
prevention.

These changes to the brain's stress response system may be linked to the
higher rates
of depression among children who are regularly picked on by their peers,
especially girls. The adolescent years are when peer relations are most
important and when girls, more than anything, want to belong, Dr.
Vaillancourt says.

She and her colleagues have been following 140 children in the Hamilton
area. Half were never bullied, and serve as a control group. Among the other
half, some Have been bullied every year since they were 12. But others have
had a reprieve. The researchers plan to do brain scans of these teens to see
if being bullied when they were younger had a lasting impact on their
brains.

A Comprehensive Guide To Web Terminology

Newcomers and old timers alike can gain new knowledge with this terrific guide.

Frequently there is a lot of terminology and acronyms posted on the internet. Most of it has no definition attached, which leaves you trying to figure out what it means from the context it's used in, or look it up. That's where this guide comes in. You can find words and their definitions in these areas:

· General Design Terms

· Typography Design Terms

· Color Design Terms

· Composition Design Terms

· General Developing Terms

· Developer Languages

· Developer Content Terms

· CSS Terms

· Typography Developer Terms

Terms are not listed alphabetically, something to keep in mind if you're looking for a specific term. Pronunciation on a few terms would have been helpful, most of the terminology is short and doesn't need much explanation, Enjoy.

Spanish Language Plays Significant Role in Business World ...
By Donna J. Jodhan

Spanish as a spoken language continues to grow; in the business world as well as in the social circle.  This should not come as a surprise to anyone as Spanish is the second most popular spoken language in the United States.

Spanish is quickly becoming an important language of trade and commerce and this trend is expected to continue for the foreseeable future.  This means that there are going to be a lot of opportunities for those wishing to work in the Spanish language as translators, interpreters, and teachers.  This also means that many careers will be opening up for bilingual travel agents, health care professionals who can speak both English and Spanish, legal professionals, plus much more.

The future is very bright and I invite you now to please see below.

Don't let anyone stomp on your dreams

Greetings!  I'm Scott Savoy, editor at www.sterlingcreations.ca
Today, I start by extending a happy Thanksgiving wish to our Canadian friends and wish them the very best.
It's time for me to introduce an editorial by our president Donna J. Jodhan and today Donna talks about the importance of preserving our dreams.  I invite you now to read on and wish you a great weekend.

+++++++++++++++

Don't let anyone stomp on your dreams

Some people say that dreams are just dreams.  Nothing more or nothing less.  When we sleep at night we dream and some times we forget what we dream about.  Sometimes however, we remember our dreams and often time we are at a loss to understand how our dreams relate to reality and our daily lives.

Robert F Kennedy once said:  "Some men see things as they are and say why?  I dream things that never were and say why not."  This quote has had a very profound effect on me throughout my life and it's the quote that I often use to get me motivated.

For the purpose of this editorial, I'm not referring to the dreams that take place at night while we sleep.  I'm referring to the dreams that we have as kids.  The ones that we have when we imagine what we would like to grow up to be.  The ones that we have when we attend college or university.  The ones we have when we start our very first job.  The ones we have when we retire.  The ones we have for our kids.

These are all dreams.  If we hope and wish for something then it's a dream.  If we say that we'd like to have enough income to live on when we retire, it's a dream.  If we say that we'd like to travel to Europe or the Far East, then it's definitely a dream.  If we say that when we grow up we'd like to be a pilot, then that too is a dream.  Dreams, dreams!  The one thing about them is that they are ours and no one can take them away from us unless we let them.  No one can stop us from dreaming and no one can tell us what to dream about.

Dreams are precious and whether or not we like to admit it, they play a very important part in our lives.  For what would our lives be like if we did not hope, wish, or dream? That good old birthday cake with the candles just waiting for the birthday girl or boy to blow them out after making a wish, that is a dream.  Dreams have been with us for longer than a day and they are precious.  Believe it or not, almost all of us use them to get where we want to go.  We must therefore keep them safe and treasure them.  Keep them always close to our hearts and never let anyone stomp on them.  For if we do, we would have a very difficult time living our lives the way we want.

I'm Donna J. Jodhan wishing you a terrific day and weekend.

Who ever thought!!!!

Thank you Nicolas.

A reader's contribution

Who ever thought!!!!

Who ever thought whether these changes are good or bad depends in part on
how we adapt to them. But, ready or not, here they come!

1.  The Post Office.  Get ready to imagine a world without the post office.
They are so deeply in financial trouble that there is probably no way to
sustain it long term. Email, Fed Ex, and UPS have just about wiped out the
minimum revenue needed to keep the post office alive. Most of your mail
every day is junk mail and bills.

2. The Check. Britain is already laying the groundwork to do away with
checks by 2018. It costs the financial system billions of dollars a year to
process checks. Plastic cards and online transactions will lead to the
eventual demise of the check. This plays right into the death of the post
office If you never paid your bills by mail and never received them by mail,

the post office would absolutely go out of business.

3. The Newspaper. The younger generation simply doesn't read the newspaper.
They certainly don't subscribe to a daily delivered print edition. That may
go the way of the milkman and the laundry man. As for reading the paper
online, get ready to pay for it. The rise in mobile Internet devices and
e-readers has caused all the newspaper and magazine publishers to form an
alliance. They have met with Apple, Amazon, and the major cell phone
companies to develop a model for paid subscription services.

4. The Book. You say you will never give up the physical book that you hold
in your hand and turn the literal pages. I said the same thing about
downloading music from iTunes. I wanted my hard copy CD. But I quickly
changed my mind when I discovered that I could get albums for half the price

without ever leaving home to get the latest music. The same thing will
happen with books. You can browse a bookstore online and even read a preview

chapter before you buy. And the price is less than half that of a real book.

And think of the convenience! Once you start flicking your fingers on the
screen instead of the book, you find that you are lost in the story, can't
wait to see what happens next, and you forget that you're holding a gadget
instead of a book.

5. The Land Line Telephone. Unless you have a large family and make a lot of

local calls, you don't need it anymore. Most people keep it simply because
they're always had it. But you are paying double charges for that extra
service. All the cell phone companies will let you call customers using the
same cell provider for no charge against your minutes.

6. Music. This is one of the saddest parts of the change story. The music
industry is dying a slow death. Not just because of illegal downloading.
It's the lack of innovative new music being given a chance to get to the
people who would like to hear it. Greed and corruption is the problem. The
record labels and the radio conglomerates simply self-destruction. Over
40% of the music purchased today is "catalog items," meaning traditional
music that the public is familiar with. Older established artists. This is
also true on the live concert circuit. To explore this fascinating and
disturbing topic further, check out the book, "Appetite for
Self-Destruction" by Steve Knopper, and the video documentary, "Before the
Music Dies."

7. Television. Revenues to the networks are down dramatically. Not just
because of the economy. People are watching TV and movies streamed from
their computers. And they're playing games and doing all lots of other
things that take up the time that used to be spent watching TV.  Prime time
shows have degenerated down to lower than the lowest common denominator.
Cable rates are skyrocketing and commercials run about every
4 minutes and 30 seconds. I say good riddance to most of it It's time for
the cable companies to be put out of our misery. Let the people choose what
they want to watch online and Through Netflix.

7. The "Things" That You Own. Many of the very possessions that we used to
own are still in our lives, but we may not actually own them in the future.
They may simply reside in "the cloud." Today your computer has a hard drive
and you store your pictures, music, movies, and documents. Your software is
on a CD or DVD, and you can always re-install it if need be. But all of that

is changing. Apple, Microsoft, and Google are all finishing up their latest
"cloud services." That means that when you turn on a computer, the Internet
will be built into the operating system. So, Windows, Google, and the Mac OS

will be tied straight into the Internet. If you click an icon, it will open
something in the Internet cloud. If you save something, it will be saved to
the cloud. And you may pay a monthly subscription fee to the cloud provider.

In this virtual world, you can access your music or your books, or your
whatever from any laptop or handheld device. That's the good news. But, will

you actually own any of this "stuff" or will it all be able to disappear at
any moment in a big "Poof?" Will most of the things in our lives be
disposable and whimsical? It makes you want to run to the closet and pull
out that photo album, grab a book from the shelf, or open up a CD case and
pull out the insert.

8. Privacy. If there ever was a concept that we can look back on
nostalgically, it would be privacy. That's gone. It's been gone for a long
time anyway. There are cameras on the street, in most of the buildings, and
even built into your computer and cell phone. But you can be sure that
24/7 "They" know who you are and where you are, right down to the GPS
coordinates, and the Google Street View. If you buy something, your habit is

put into a zillion profiles, and your ads will change to reflect those
habits. And "They" will try to get you to buy something else. Again and
again.

Here's a list of outstanding sites to check out things that seem a little iffy, too good to be true, or say send this to everyone you know!.

Internet scams, hoaxes and urban legends take many forms so it's good to have a few places you can go to see if something is true or not.

snopes.com: Urban Legends Reference Pages

Launched in 1995, snopes.com is one of the first, and best, in my opinion, sites to target this growing area of interest and usually the first place I go to check on something.

TruthOrFiction.com

is another reliable site with the top 20 stories on TruthOrFiction.com in the last hour being a good way to keep an eye on the latest items making the rounds.

About.com : Current Internet Hoaxes, Email Rumors And Urban Legends

The about.com page on current internet hoaxes, email rumors And urban legends has a short but good list of items and includes a FAQ that defines the differences between a hoax, a rumor and an urban legend.

"Scambusters.org, Internet Scams, Identity Theft, and Urban Legends: Are You at Risk?"

Another excellent site that cover not only myths, scams, and hoaxes, but phishing, ID theft, and credit card fraud. Their email scams page

keeps on top of most recent items making the rounds.

The next time someone sends you email exclaiming "send this to everyone you know!" you know where to check it out.

ConveyThis Unveils All-New Insult Translator

ConveyThis Unveils All-New Insult Translator
By Donna J. Jodhan

When it comes to using translation software to translate, there are advantages as well as drawbacks.
True?  Machine language translation does give a great grasp of the foreign language.
True?  It translates word for word.
True?  It often fails to interpret the true message.

I truly believe that machine language software has a part to play in the world of translation but it needs to be used in conjunction with the human translator with the latter taking the lead role.  Machine language software is definitely improving but I like many others do not believe that it could or would ever take the place of a human translator.  Bravo to the developers of machine language software!  It has its place as I said.

I have an excellent reference for you to read.  Please see below.
