Language Translation Most Significant To The Global Business

Language Translation Most Significant To The Global Business
By Donna J. Jodhan

True it is that English may still be the main language in several quarters including in the political arena but when it comes to global trade; that's another story.

One can easily argue that English is still the main language of global trade but on the flip side of the coin there are several other languages that are challenging strongly.  It is no longer possible to get away with just knowing English.  No, now it is becoming more important to be able to converse and communicate in other languages such as Spanish, Chinese, French, and several of the Asian and Middle Eastern dialects.

So what does all of this mean?  In plain and simple language; it means that anyone or any company hoping to be successful on the global stage needs to ensure that they are being amply supported by professional language translation services.  This very crucial to success and if you are unable to provide yourself with this then it would only be a matter of time before you start to sink in quick sand.

Can the playing field really be made level for special needs persons?

Greetings!  I'm Christian Robicheau, assistant editor at www.sterlingcreations.ca and it's the last weekend of August.
I hope that everyone has had an enjoyable August and hopefully September will be as delightful.
Today, I am pleased to introduce an editorial by our president Donna J. Jodhan.
Here now is Donna.
I wish you a great weekend.

+++++++++++++++
Can the playing field really be made level for special needs persons?

In my humble opinion, the playing field for special needs persons has never been level and many argue that the playing field is becoming more and more slanted and undaunting for special needs persons.  True it is that we have seen several positive changes within the past two decades.  Technology is allowing and enabling more and more special needs persons to keep abreast of information through the Internet.  There are some corporations and governments that are making efforts to include special needs persons in their labor forces.  However, there's still much to be done.

After two decades, statistics still show that the unemployment rate among
blind and visually impaired persons are above 80% and that about 70% of special needs persons live below the poverty line.  There are still barriers to employment, to housing, and to services.  Special needs persons still face financial barriers, but most of all they continue to be challenged by attitude.

The United Nations has been making noises about strongly encouraging its members to be kinder and gentler towards their special needs populations.  Each year in early December they set aside a day to remember the disabled but unfortunately it's not enough.  Many leading world governments are still not doing enough to help special needs persons.  The United States recently celebrated the 17th anniversary of the ADA legislation and for all of its good intentions many advocates are still very much dissatisfied with the results.  In Canada, many refer to the government as mean spirited as there is still no legislation in place in that country that would force companies and agencies to treat special needs persons with equality.  In Britain and Europe as a whole, there seems to be some concerted effort towards improving the lives of special needs persons but the same can't be said for the rest of the world.

We need to see governments take more affirmative action.  Governments need to start setting the example and they also need to start taking more responsibility.  For as long as special needs persons pay taxes, then they are entitled to equality and entitled to receive equal accessibility to information be it through websites, by phone, or anything else.  If governments take the lead then it's almost an assurity that companies will follow along with the rest of the mainstream population.

Finally, we need to see governments take a firm stand towards those so-called agencies that continue to fill their pockets with donations from well-meaning members of the public, instead of using these donations to better the lives of those who they say they're helping.  Too many agencies continue to get away with not providing adequate services to special needs persons.

Have a great September.

Brain blanks out when viewing other races: study; But research shows lack of
empathy response can change

Allison Cross
Edmonton Journal , May 1, 2010

New research by Canadian scientists into the origins of human prejudice has
found the brain responds differently when interacting with someone of a
different race.

"We know that prejudice exists, even in subtle forms, and has chan ged
over the years," said Michael Inzlicht, one of the study's authors and an
assistant professor of psychology at the University of Toronto Scarborough.
"But we wanted to see how that would manifest itself in the brain."

Participants in the study -- all white men -- watched videos of white,
black, South Asian and East Asian men picking up a glass of water and taking
a sip.

While the white men watched the videos, scientists hooked them up to
electroencephalogram machines (EEG), which monitored whether or not their
brains mimicked what they saw. Scientists found there was less activity in
the motor-cortex area of the brain when the white men were watching someone
of a different race. Typically the brain responds as though it's performing
the action itself.

"What we found is that there is a basic difference in the way peoples'
brains react to those from other ethnic backgrounds," said PhD student
Jennifer Gutsell, another author of the study. "Observing someone of a
different race produced significantly less motor-cortex activity than
observing a person of one's own race. In other words, people were less
likely to mentally simulate the actions of other-race than same-race
people."

The brain's ability to mimic or simulate an action, sometimes called the
mirror-neuron-system, is linked to the brain's ability to feel empathy by
mirroring the emotions of others, Inzlicht said.

"Evolutionary biologists or psychologists, they say these are the building
blocks for empathy," he said. "This doesn't mean this is inevitable or this
is natural or it can't be changed. In fact, you've got lots of research that
shows it can change."

The study looked at the brain activity of white men observing white and
non-white men, but the results aren't likely to be any different if
researchers monitored the brain activity of another race, Inzlicht said.

"There's nothing special with white men or black men or others," he said.

Inzlicht said similar studies have monitored participants as they watched
someone of a different race express an emotion, like sadness.

"When that someone else belonged to a different group, they didn't simulate
those emotions and that was true if you were white and you were observing
someone black or if you were South Asian and you were observing someone East
Asian," he said.

The next step in the research by Inzlicht and Gutsell is looking at how
people can change.

The study was published in the Journal of Experimental Social Psychology.

Will Google Buzz Find Mainstream Appeal?

Greetings!  I'm Mark Micheau, manager of research and translation services at www.sterlingcreations.ca.
It's the middle of yet another warm summer 2010 week and August is simply rushing by.
Today, I have a great article to share with you;  All about whether or not Google buzz can find mainstream appeal.
I wish you a great day.

What features would make Google Buzz more useful for you?
Give us some ideas

Will Google Buzz Find Mainstream Appeal?
Chris Crum | Staff Writer

Google Making Moves to Make Buzz More Useful

Google is starting to make some significant moves that may give Google Buzz a significant boost. For example, this week, a "Reshare" button was announced. This is essentially Google's version of the retweet. If you follow a Buzz user who posts an interesting update, you can hit the "reshare" button (down with the comment, like, and email buttons) to repost that post to your own Buzz stream.

Will new features fuel Buzz growth? Comment here.

Reshare only works for public posts. Private posts will not have the reshare link. However, you can reshare posts yourself publicly or privately. If a lot of people you follow reshare the same post, the similar posts will be collapsed.

"You'll notice that resharing creates a new post, effectively forking the conversation. To fork or not fork was a decision we debated for a while," says Buzz software engineer Sam Goto. "Ultimately, we think forked conversations help create more varied, intimate discussions around a single item. We realize people may want a non-forking version too, so we're thinking about how to do that as well."

"When there is a chain of reshares, the names of all of the people who publicly reshare the post appear on the original item, even if they're not directly connected to the original author," Goto explains. "If you share something that ends up getting passed around by lots of other people, it's pretty cool to see that."

Google Spices Up Enterprise Development - Click Here Now

It's also worth noting that you can "like" a reshare, and that will not translate to a "like" for the original post. This means you can like a comment without liking what the comment is about.

Google also  announced that it's releasing an XHTML version of the Buzz website which can be accessed from many mobile devices like those running Android pre-2.0, Blackberry, Nokia S60, and Windows Mobile. This could go a long way for getting Buzz used by mobile users across a broader range of devices.

Google Buzz launched earlier this year to a great deal of hype - and why not - a potential Facebook/Twitter competitor from the giant that is Google - but much of the "buzz" about Buzz has faded in the months since. In fact, most of the discussion in the media about Buzz has been centered around privacy issues (though that has become considerably less rampant...Facebook has filled that role nicely).
As we've been saying since long before Buzz was announced, the key to a Google social network offering is in the integration with its other products. This made launching Buzz within Gmail seem like a smart move, but there is still much work to be done if Buzz is to become a real player in the space.

Adding features, such as the reshare feature is a start, but what may have a more significant impact was an announcement that came last week.

During Google I/O, I attended a session in which Google quietly announced the launch of the Buzz API. The news was generally overshadowed by other Google announcements, such as the unveilings of Google TV and FroYo, but with developers getting access to the Buzz API, there is room for much to be done around the service in terms of third-party apps, which should ultimately make Buzz much more useful. That's what happened with Twitter. Developers like TweetDeck, Boxee, Buzzzy, Klout, Meebo, Seesmic, Vinehub, Shareaholic, and other have already taken advantage of the Buzz API.

It's hard to say if the general public will find a real need for Buzz alongside Facebook, Twitter and other services, but as Google grows its presence in mobile via Android, and soon into television via Google TV, there will be more potential gateways for Buzz adoption, as well as integration.

Is Buzz headed in the right direction? Do you think Buzz use will explode? Share your thoughts.

Translation and Software Localization Blog: Open a Window to the World
By Donna J. Jodhan

Now, here is a case for making a Herculean effort to translate your website into the top 13 languages being used on the Internet.  That is, if you are really into global trade and global services.

If you do this, then you have a much better chance of search engines finding you.  You will also be able to attract more than 90% of global visitors.  You will have the chance to reach so many more consumers.  Great points but please do not forget to have your website translated appropriately; using proper language colloquialisms, phrases, and grammar.  Nothing is worse than having a translation that fails to meet all of these criteria; not just one of these but all of these.

If you are interested to learn more, then you need to find out what the top 13 languages are.  Next your need to obtain the necessary skills to do it all.  Finally, you need to ensure that the translations of your website are accurate and appropriate; sending out the intended messages.  I have a great article for you to read.  Please see below.

Seniors missing out

Greetings!  I'm Scott savoy, editor at www.sterlingcreations.ca and yet another gorgeous weekend for us to enjoy.
Today, I am delighted to introduce an editorial by our president Donna J. Jodhan and in her editorial, Donna talks about society paying more attention to our seniors.
I wish you a great day.

Seniors missing out

We are moving and grooving in a whirlwind of technology changes and like it or not, we do not have much of a choice.  For the most part, this is great news for those of us who are able to swim with the current but for those who did not grow up with technology, mainly the majority of seniors, it is a big drawback.  Here's how I see the picture.

More and more, we are using our cell phones to communicate; through calling each other and by texting each other.  We are using social network sites such as Facebook, Twitter, and Linkedin to communicate with each other on an almost instant basis and we are using emails to communicate.  All of this means that the days of letter writing and picking up the phone to call are fast becoming a thing of the past.  Seniors grew up in the days of letter writing and making phone calls and now that these two modes of communication are becoming outdated, what should our seniors be doing?  They grew up using telegrams and cables to send special greetings to each other and this mode of communication is now a thing of the past.

Gone are the days when it was an every day part of life to call each other using a land line.  Gone are the days when you could look forward to hearing a friendly voice whenever you called a number or whenever your phone rang.  Now, the world has been taken over by automated phone messages and phone calls.  Friendly Human voices have been replaced by computers that interact with the Internet in order to communicate back and forth.  So, where does this leave those seniors who find it difficult to use modern technology?  Seniors who still prefer to receive friendly phone calls?  Seniors who are much more comfortable writing letters and mailing them?  Seniors who much prefer to talk to a Human voice rather than dealing with automated phone systems?

Some may say that seniors need to get with it; that they need to become more technically savvy.  Easier said than done.  Change at the best of time is not very easy to deal with and when you add the rapidity of these changes; it may be a bit too much for seniors to deal with all at once.  Those of us who either grew up with technology in our laps or have managed to jump onto the rafts of change, need to keep this in mind when dealing with seniors.  In addition, companies need to be a bit more conscious of this picture and they need to tailor their products and services to suit.  We have to help our seniors to remain a part of our daily lives; that is, we have to find ways to keep them in the loop of evolving communications.  We cannot forget them because after all!  They are the ones who helped us to get where we are today.

I'm Donna J. Jodhan wishing you a terrific day and weekend.

Vitamin D may slash risk of heart-disease risk

Greetings!  I'm Nico Trimoff, manager of accessibility and transcription services at www.sterlingcreations.ca.

Vitamin D may slash risk of heart-disease risk

Martin Mittelstaedt
Globe and Mail, Mar. 15, 2010

Popping a vitamin D pill every day may give people a significant edge in
reducing their odds of having heart disease, the leading cause of premature
death in Canada.

Doctors at the Intermountain Medical Center Heart Institute in Murray, Utah,
reviewed 31,000 of their patients and found that those with the lowest
levels of vitamin D in their blood had a 170-per-cent greater risk of heart
attacks than those with the highest amounts of the nutrient.

The patients, all aged 50 or older, were placed into groups based on how
much vitamin D they had and then tracked for more than a year to see what
kind of medical problems they experienced.

"We think that this study . certainly adds further evidence to suggest that
if you have low vitamin D and you treat yourself, you may have less heart
disease," said Brent Muhlestein, director of cardiovascular research at the
institute.

The benefits of having more vitamin D were not limited to a cut in
heart-attack risk.
Those with the lowest readings also had an 80-per-cent greater risk of
death, a 54-per-cent
higher risk of diabetes, a 40-per-cent higher risk of coronary artery
disease, a
72-per-cent higher risk of kidney failure and a 26-per-cent higher risk of
depression.

Dr. Muhlestein said the results suggest people can lower their "chances of
dying or having heart attacks or developing diabetes" through vitamin D
supplementation.

The findings were presented today at the American College of Cardiology's
annual scientific session in Atlanta.

Previous studies have found associations between low vitamin D readings and
cancer and other chronic ailments, but these new findings are some of the
most provocative, because they involved such a large survey of patients.

Detecting different disease risks in such a large group allowed the
researchers to conclude that their results were statistically significant,
meaning they were unlikely to be flukes due to chance.

But the findings of health benefits from so-called observational studies -
such as the one at Intermountain - that compare people based on vitamin D
levels have been greeted cautiously within the medical community because
they don't actually prove that a lack of the nutrient caused any of the
diseases.

Those with more vitamin D could have been living healthier lifestyles
involving more outdoor exercise, for instance, explaining why they have
lower heart attack risk.

To test whether vitamin D played an active role, the Utah researchers then
tracked for a year a group of 9,400 patients who'd been told they needed to
take more of the nutrient.
Among the 47 per cent who reached normal vitamin D readings, there was about
a 30 per cent reduction in the risk of death and about a 17 per cent
reduction in risk
of coronary artery disease, suggesting that the nutrient, rather than
lifestyle differences,
caused the better outcome.

Low blood levels of the vitamin is a common condition among people in
high-latitude
areas of the world, such as the northern United States and Canada. During
fall and winter's feeble sunlight, it isn't possible to make the nutrient
the natural way: in bare skin exposed to strong ultraviolet light.

The link to light is the reason the nutrient is dubbed the sunshine vitamin,
although small amounts are found in fortified foods, such as milk, and
naturally in oily cold-water fish such as salmon. Larger amounts are
contained in over-the-counter vitamin supplements.

The survey found that the lowest disease risks occurred among those with
blood levels of about 107 nanomoles a litre.

Dr. Muhlestein said people vary widely in the amount of vitamin D needed to
reach
blood levels associated with lower disease risks. Some required only 1,000
International Units daily, while others needed up to 5,000 IU a day.

These amounts are substantially more than what Health Canada currently
advises - 200 to 600 IU a day, depending on age - a recommendation based on
the nutrient's well documented role in good bone health. Health Canada and
the U.S. government have
jointly asked an expert panel whether this recommendation needs to be
updated. A decision is expected in July or August.

Dr. Muhlestein isn't waiting. "My recommendation to all my patients, and
certainly
I did it for myself, is to get your vitamin D checked and if you're very low
or Even a little bit low, start taking supplementation and then get it
rechecked," he said.

Intermountain is a non-profit medical organization with 20 hospitals and
other
Health facilities.

According to figures from the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada,
cardiovascular
disease causes about 31 per cent of all deaths in Canada, or more than
71,000 annually.

Is Facebook Going to Change the Face of E-Commerce?

Greetings!  I'm Mark Micheau, manager of research and translation services at www.sterlingcreations.ca and I hope that everyone is enjoying their week thus far.
Today, I have a great article to share with you; all about how Google's activities are set to create splashes and splats for the world of e-commerce.
I hope you find it interesting and I wish you a terrific day.

Is Facebook Going to Change the Face of E-Commerce?
Chris Crum | Staff Writer

App Maker Talks Facebook Product Listings

Over the years, Facebook has grown into much more than a social network, including a place to shop. More and more brands are placing product listings on their Facebook Pages, a phenomenon, we've discussed more than once within the last week or so.

WebPronews had a chat with Doron Simovitch, co-Founder, President, and CEO of comparison shopping site Sortprice, which has a Facebook application for product listings that recently surpassed 1,000 stores.

We asked if it is an exaggeration to say Facebook is going to change the face of e-commerce. "We don't think it's an exaggeration at all," replied Simovitch. "Facebook is now the most-trafficked website in the country, with an audience of hundreds of millions of people that is growing every day. That's an enormous base of potential customers that cannot be ignored by online retailers. And they're not. More and more retailers are experimenting with tools to reach these Facebook users, and incorporate social networking into their operations overall."

Share your thoughts here.
"As online shopping continues to gain popularity, social networking sites will increasingly be brought into the fold," he added. "This integration, then, is definitely something that is going to change how e-tailers do business."

More e-commerce platform vendors are no doubt going to begin offering Facebook apps, making the space more and more competitive. "We were pretty much the only game in town when we rolled out our merchant application in late 2008, but since then we've seen others follow suit with similar tools," said Simovtich. "For the same reasons we stated above, vendors recognize there is great potential in selling on Facebook and other social networking sites. Plus Facebook is pretty receptive to new applications that are of value to its users."

Bing Explains Search and Mobile Updates - Click Here Now

"We expect more product listing applications to emerge and continue to evolve with new features and tools," he continued. "Our team at Sortprice is always thinking of ways to upgrade and improve the Merchant Store application because we want it to remain the best retailer application on Facebook. But overall, as more people realize the e-commerce potential that Facebook offers, the more tools and applications you'll see emerge for both shoppers and merchants."

We've seen that customers are starting to get more comfortable making purchases from their mobile devices. We wonder if customers will be as quick to find comfort in making transactions through Facebook. A retailer operating a store on Facebook via Sortprice's app is providing product listings that are tied to their own site, as is the case with other e-commerce Facebook apps. Still, Facebook has shown that consumers can buy physical goods through the social network with its virtual currency, which could become more commonplace in the future, particularly as major players compete to dominate the mobile payment platform space.

We also wonder if Facebook's enormous popularity, and the e-commerce potential that comes along with it has the ability to threaten search engines as the preferred way to find products to purchase.

"As more people learn about shopping opportunities on Facebook, the more they'll start to look at it as a viable means of shopping online," Simovitch said. "That being said however, no one will ever confuse Facebook for a shopping-only resource and thus, it's not a threat to shopping search engines."

Perhaps it will help Facebook continue to boost its share of the search market.

"We think of it more as an alternative or even something retailers can use in conjunction with their existing shopping portals," he said. "The interactive nature of Facebook is what makes it such a good complimentary tool for retailers--they can offer users the ability to build product wishlists that their Facebook friends can comment on, as well as give shoppers access to product reviews and images. Some of our merchants have run contests or giveaways through their Facebook fan/store pages as well. It really enhances the research side of shopping online in a constructive and even fun way."

Last week, we talked to Mitchell Harper, CEO of BigCommerce, which just launched another Facebook e-commerce app called SocialShop. Have you tried either of these products or other similar apps? Which do you prefer? Is listing products on Facebook worth your time? Tell us what you think.

Should I take School Business Spanish or Chinese?

Should I take School Business Spanish or Chinese?
By Donna J. Jodhan

So which language do you think would be more beneficial to learn?  Business Spanish or Chinese?  An interesting question and there are many arguments for and against.  I don't think that there is any right opinion or answer.  Rather, it all depends on your personal circumstances, aspirations, and needs.

If you live in America and have a need to interact with the second largest group, the Hispanic group which is the fastest growing group in America today, then you may want to lean more towards learning business Spanish.  However, if you are looking towards those lucrative markets of millions of consumers in Asia, then you may want to air on the side of learning Chinese.

As it stands today, Chinese and Spanish are the second and third most spoken languages on the Internet respectively.  I could say then that you may want to learn both languages in order to kill two birds with one stone so to speak but keep in mind that both languages are like night and day; their grammatical make up are very different in style and nature.  So, back to my solution; learn the language that best fits your needs and aspirations.  I have a great reference for you to read.  Please see below.

The missing piece to the 2010 winter Olympics

Greetings!  I'm Christian Robicheau, assistant editor at www.sterlingcreations.ca and another beautiful weekend for us to enjoy.
Time for me to introduce the weekly editorial by our president Donna J. Jodhan and today, Donna has a very important issue to raise, all about a missing piece to our 2010 Canadian winter Olympics.  Why don't you tell us how you feel?
Send an email to donnajodhan@sterlingcreations.ca.  I wish you a great weekend.

The missing piece to the 2010 winter Olympics

Six months ago, Canada found itself in the middle of a blaze of glory as it played host to the world through its hosting of the winter Olympic games in Vancouver British Columbia.  One can say that in general, this country got a bit more than a passing grade for its efforts but there is one thing that was missing; the failure by the major TV networks to provide coverage in an accessibleformat.

Of course, CTV and its affiliates did a bang up job when it came to providing up to the minute coverage but alas!  It did not provide coverage in an accessible manner to Canada's Blind and vision impaired Canadians.  Several letters of complaint were written to CTV but as of now, I have been told that none of the responses have been very satisfactory.  As a matter of fact, it appears to me that CTV did not understand what was meant when several persons complained about Blind and vision impaired persons not having been able to access the coverage through the Internet.

I myself phoned the good folks at CTV and had much difficulty in getting anyone to respond to me.  In fact, one of my emails to alon marcovici which I sent on March 24 was never responded to.  Here is the text of my email to Mr. alon marcovici.
(Begin text)
Dear Mr Marcovici,
My name is Donna Jodhan and I am the second vice president for the Alliance for equality of Blind Canadians.  Our organization recently issued a press release on the inaccessibility of the Olympics websites but unfortunately we have not received any response from your organization.
I would be willing to discuss further with you and I am pasting the press release below.
I shall look forward to hearing from you at your earliest convenience.
Many thanks
Donna Jodhan; second vice president Alliance for Equality of Blind Canadians
(End text)

Here is the press release that the Alliance for Equality of Blind Canadians (AE BC) issued:
NEWS RELEASE     FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE   Noon February 26, 2010

BLIND CANADIANS OVERLOOKED BY OLYMPIC WEBSITES

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Blind Canadians who rely on adaptive computer equipment lost out on much of the Olympic experience because key websites were not designed to be accessible."

The charge comes from an Ontario expert on website design, Jeffrey Stark. "Olympics websites Vancouver2010.com and ctvolympics.ca/ are both inaccessible to Canadians who are blind or have limited sight.  It's a shame, because international guidelines exist on how to develop accessible web sites or applications for everyone, including persons with disabilities," according to Mr. Stark.  These guidelines are found at http://www.w3.org/wai.

Stark discovered the shortcomings before the Opening Ceremony in Vancouver. "My 6 year old daughter and I spent an hour trying to get content information on line, but it just wasn't accessible.  We contacted CTV via their website to recommend a few simple remedies, but as the final weekend got underway, we had no response."

Donna Jodhan, 2nd Vice President of the Alliance for Equality of Blind Canadians says, "In 2010, there is no excuse for any organization to operate a website that is not fully accessible and usable by all Canadians. Guidelines and expertise are readily available to help organizations that need to update their sites."

The Alliance for Equality of Blind Canadians (AEBC) is a national organization of Canadians who are Blind, Deaf-blind and partially sighted, that focuses on researching and providing input into public policy issues.                                                                     2/

2/   BLIND CANADIANS OVERLOOKED BY OLYMPIC WEBSITES

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

When he first noticed the problem websites Jeffrey Stark contacted AEBC, setting out three examples of shortcomings in the Olympic on-line offerings:

          1)  The video player used by the sites for live streaming video does not
support keyboard usage.  This would cause problems for a host of
users of voice recognition, screen reader and alternate input users.

          2)  Images lacking alt tags.  Probably the easiest correction of all the
accessibility requirements is when placing a picture on a page, the site should
attach a piece of text to the image (in the code), describing the image.

3)  Meaningful links allow a variety of users to use link-based navigation to navigate
a site effectively, so the user knows where he/she is going when selecting the link.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I would like to end my editorial by publishing the text from a response that one of the members of the AEBC, Everett Zufelt received and I am sure that you will see from this response that CTV has clearly missed the boat on this issue; not really understanding what is meant when one says that their coverage was inaccessible to Blind Canadians.  May I take this opportunity to gently point out to the good folks at CTV that Blind persons do not need close captioning in order to be able to access Internet videos.  Instead, they need audio description.  Hopefully this problem will be rectified in time for the next major international sporting event that Canada plays host to.
(Begin text of CTV's response to Everett Zufelt)
Canada's Olympic Broadcast Media Consortium delivered a record 4,800 hours of multiplatform coverage from the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games, far surpassing previous commitments by other Canadian broadcasters.  All English and French television coverage was Closed Captioned.  The Consortium's websites, CTVOlympics.ca and RDSolympiques.ca, provided an unprecedented amount of content and video, providing consumers with the ability to watch replays, access information about specific sports and athletes, and catch up on moments they may have missed.  The Consortium strives to make its websites as accessible as possible and continues to monitor progress being made in the availability of accessibility.  As such, key components of CTVOlympics.ca and RDSolympiques.ca were Web Accessibility Initiative compliant during the 2010 Winter Games, including event schedule and results, news, athlete bios, medals information, and contests.  We support continued open dialogue with the disability community and it's our goal to work towards increased Web accessibility.

Andrea Goldstein

You'll Never look at a MONOPOLY Game the same ..

Greetings!  I'm Nico Trimoff, manager of accessibility and transcription services at www.sterlingcreations.ca.
Today, I have a fun article for you to read; sent in by Nico Brannon and we thank Nico for this.  If you are a monopoly enthusiast then you may or may not like this one.
Enjoy and have a great day.

+++++++++++++++
A reader's contribution

You'll Never look at a MONOPOLY Game the same ..

Starting in 1941, an increasing number of British Airmen found themselves as the involuntary guests of the Third Reich, and the Crown was casting about
for ways and means to facilitate their escape.. Now obviously, one of the most helpful aids to that end is a useful and accurate map, one showing not only
where stuff was, but also showing the locations of 'safe houses' where a POW on-the-lam could go for food and shelter.

Paper maps had some real drawbacks -- they make a lot of noise when you open and fold them, they wear out rapidly, and if they get wet, they turn into mush.

Someone in MI-5 (similar to  America 's  OSS ) got the idea of printing escape maps on silk. It's durable, can be scrunched-up into tiny wads, and unfolded
as many times as needed, and makes no noise whatsoever.

At that time, there was only one manufacturer in Great  Britain  that had perfected the technology of printing on silk, and that was John Waddington, Ltd.
When approached by the government, the firm was only too happy to do its bit for the war effort.

By pure coincidence, Waddington was also the U.K. Licensee for the popular American board game, Monopoly. As it happened, 'games and pastimes' was a category
of item qualified for insertion into 'CARE packages', dispatched by the International Red Cross to prisoners of war.

Under the strictest of secrecy, in a securely guarded and inaccessible old workshop on the grounds of Waddington's, a group of sworn-to-secrecy employees
began mass-producing escape maps, keyed to each region of Germany or Italy where Allied POW camps were regional system).. When processed, these maps could
be folded into such tiny dots that they would actually fit inside a Monopoly playing piece.

As long as they were at it, the clever workmen at Waddington's also managed to add:
1. A playing token, containing a small magnetic compass
2. A two-part metal file that could easily be screwed together
3. Useful amounts of genuine high-denomination German, Italian, and French currency, hidden within the piles of Monopoly money!

British and American air crews were advised, before taking off on their first mission, how to identify a 'rigged' Monopoly set -- by means of a tiny red
dot, one cleverly rigged to look like an ordinary printing glitch, located in the corner of the Free Parking square.

Of the estimated 35,000 Allied POWS who successfully escaped, an estimated one-third were aided in their flight by the rigged Monopoly sets.. Everyone who
did so was sworn to secrecy indefinitely, since the British Government might want to use this highly successful ruse in still another, future war. The
story wasn't declassified until 2007, when the surviving craftsmen from Waddington's, as well as the firm itself, were finally honoured in a public ceremony.
It's always nice when you can play that 'Get Out of Jail' Free' card!

I realize most of you are (probably) too young to have any personal connection to WWII (Dec. '41 to Aug. '45), but this is still interesting.

Hidden wireless networks are those networks which do not broadcast their Network ID, SSID. While not that many people use such networks, it definitely ads a bit more security to have your home wireless network hidden from unwanted guests. In this guide I will share with you what details you need to know in order to connect to such networks and what are the steps for making a successful connection.

First and foremost, you need to know all the identification and connection details of the hidden wireless network you want to connect to. Therefore, open your router's configuration page and go to the Wireless configuration menu. Write down the values for the Network ID (SSID)

and Security fields. Depending on what type of security your wireless network has, you will need to write down the value of another important field, as following:

For WEP security - note the value of the WEP Key field.

For WPA-PSK, WPA2-PSK(AES) security - note the value of the Preshare Key field.

NOTE:

If your wireless network has no security enabled, then you need to know only the value of the Network ID (SSID) field.

802.1X, WPA and WPA2(AES) security is generally used in enterprise networks and most likely your laptop will be pre-configured to connect to your corporate wireless network. Therefore this guide won't apply to corporate networks.

Once you have all these three details, you can go ahead with step 2.

Step 2: Start the "Set Up a Connection or Network" Wizard

To do this, you need to open the Network and Sharing Center

: go to

Start Menu -> Control Panel -> Network and Internet -> Network and Sharing Center. In the Network and Sharing Center window you will see lots of shortcuts. Click on the one that says "Set up a new connection or network"

Wireless Networks

The "Set Up a Connection or Network" wizard will now start. From the list of available options, select "Manually connect to a wireless network" and click on Next.

Wireless Networks

Step 3: Complete the Details of the Wireless Network

Now you will have to complete all the fields shown in this window. The first one is called Network name. In it, type the name of the wireless network you want to connect to, which is the equivalent of the Network ID (SSID) field from your router's wireless configuration menus.

Wireless Networks

The next field that needs to be completed is the Security type used by your wireless network. Depending on the type of security used, make the following selection:

For WEP security - select WEP.

For WPA-PSK security - select WPA-Personal.

For WPA2-PSK(AES) security - select WPA2-Personal.

NOTE: If your wireless network has no security enabled, then select No authentication (Open)

Wireless Networks

Now it is time to select the appropriate type of encryption. If you are using WPA2-PSK(AES) security, make sure you select AES. Otherwise, leave the default value Windows 7 gives you.

Wireless Networks

For WEP, WPA2 Personal and WPA Personal you will have to enter the security key:

For WEP security - the value of the WEP Key field.

For WPA-PSK, WPA2-PSK(AES) security - the value of the Preshare Key field.

Wireless Networks

If you are in a public environment, then it is a good idea to check the Hide characters box. Also, don't forget to check the other two boxes:

"Start this connection automatically" and "Connect even if the network is not broadcasting"

These two allow you to connect automatically to the hidden wireless network. Once all data is completed, click on Next.

When done, you will see a message which says that you have successfully added the wireless network to your computer. If you are unsure on any of the settings, you can click on "Change connection settings" and review them all.

Wireless Networks

This will open a window where you can change all your settings.

It can be opened at any time by going to Control Panel -> Network and Internet -> Network and Sharing Center -> Manage Wireless Networks and double clicking on the wireless network.

Wireless Networks

When done, Windows 7 will automatically connect to the hidden wireless network. Also, the wireless network icon from the taskbar will change.

Wireless Networks

Conclusion

As you can see from this guide, connecting to hidden wireless networks requires a bit more work than connecting to public ones. However, if you pay a bit of attention and don't skip any of these steps, it can be done in just a few minutes.

Need a translation? Google awaits your call

Need a translation? Google awaits your call
By Donna J. Jodhan

When it comes to breaking down or lowering the foreign language barriers, do you think it is possible to use a combination of technology and machine translation to do it?  Can this combination take the place of the human translator?  These are very sobering questions that many in the field are asking.  Do you think that it is possible that maybe and just maybe, the days of a human translator may be numbered?

There are varying opinions on this topic.  True it is that the combination of technology and machine translation has come a very long way; lead by the charge of Google but in my humble opinion, I don't really think that translators have much to worry about.  There will always be a need for the human touch.  There is still the big problem of translation software being able to translate accurately and precisely and at the present time human intervention is needed to ensure that translations are deadly accurate, that they measure up to the local language being translated to, and that the true theme of the translation is coming through.

Technology will continue to improve and it would probably mean that translators will have an easier time in their jobs but I don't think that it could ever become a real replacement or substitute for the human touch.  So nothing to be too concerned about.  I have an excellent article to share with you.  Please see below.

The growing problem with unhealthy attitudes

Greetings!  I'm Scott Savoy, editor at www.sterlingcreations.ca and today I am delighted to welcome the month of August.
It's shaping up to be another great summer's weekend and I hope that everyone has plans to enjoy it to the fullest.
It's time for me to introduce an editorial by our president Donna J. Jodhan and today Donna focuses her attention on unhealthy attitudes.  Why don't you tell us what you think?
I wish you a great weekend.

The growing problem with unhealthy attitudes

For the past year, I like so many others have watched helplessly as unhealthy attitudes around us continue to mushroom.  What exactly am I referring to today?

Unhealthy attitudes seem to be growing among our younger ones when it comes to such things as the work ethic, commitment to produce quality work and services, a bad attitude towards respect for elders, little or no regard for customer service, no courtesy, and should I go on?  Yes, just a bit more!  Even those who should know better seem to be slipping into the same mode.  Even older ones are becoming extremely lax when it comes to unhealthy attitudes.

You ask someone to produce a proposal to enhance and develop your website and you give them a deadline of one week from the request and you would be lucky if you even get it on time.  No apology, no nothing.  Your developer has just informed you that they are moving on; you ask them to complete a task before leaving and no response.  They simply leave and do not even tell you anything.  You phone a company for some customer support and while talking to the call taker you can actually hear them chewing gum and eating while talking to you.  Their knowledge of the service being sought is way below average and their attitude is one of total nonchalance.  Someone promises to be at your office to carry out some technical work and the appointed day arrives and they never show.

It's happening everywhere and almost daily I receive complaints from clients over similar types of incidents.  What is happening to our society?  Are we just too busy to care?  Have we become just too selfish and self centered that we are unable to see past our long noses?  How can we reverse these trends before it becomes a chronic problem?

Maybe it's time for us to return to the classroom where we can start to revamp some of our thinking and our reason for being.  Maybe we need to take time out and leave the Skype, cell phones, and texting behind for a bit.  Turn off the phones, leave the emails behind, and put down the iPhones and Blackberries for a while.  Make a conscious effort to shut down the computer each day for a few minutes and go out and smell the fresh air and interact with others face to face.  Go out there and help someone in need instead of always stretching out our hands for help.

It is time for us to retool our attitudes.  Time for us to rethink how we interact with others and time for us to realize that we need each other in order to survive.  It's all about team work; not just you or me alone.

I'm Donna J. Jodhan wishing you a terrific day and weekend.
